Good morning, Mets fans! RIP to a Miracle Met.
Mets Hall of Famer Jerry Koosman, a two-time All-Star who won 140 games in 12 seasons in New York and got Davey Johnson to fly out to end the 1969 World Series, died Sunday surrounded by family at his Osceola, Wis., home after battling multiple illnesses, the team announced. He was 83.
“Kooz was one of the greatest pitchers in team history and a beloved member of the Mets family,” owners Steve Cohen and Alex Cohen said in a statement. “The 1969 Miracle Mets were filled with heroes, and the special southpaw from Appleton, Minnesota, was central to their success. He was a fierce competitor on the field, and respected teammate in the clubhouse.
“His legendary performance in the World Series helped the Mets secure their first championship in team history.”
Koosman allowed four earned runs over 17 2/3 innings in the 1969 Fall Classic, and threw a complete game with nine strikeouts in the 5-3 Game 5 clincher that finished off the upset of the Orioles. He was an All-Star in his rookie year of 1968 when he went 19-12 with a 2.08 ERA over 263 2/3 innings. He was the runner-up to Johnny Bench for Rookie of the Year.
He was traded to the Twins after the 1978 season for a minor leaguer and a player to be named later, who turned out to be Jesse Orosco, who recorded the last out of the 1986 World Series. Koosman pitched for the Twins, White Sox and Phillies from 1979-1985. He faced Dwight Gooden in the second-to-last start of his career. Koosman’s No. 36 was retired by the team in 2021.
