With the MLB offseason officially underway, let’s take a look at the state of the New York Mets’ 40-man roster before they head into an important short-term and long-term decision making stretch.

While 144 players filed for free agency on Thursday, none of them were Mets because they traded away all of their pending free agents at the deadline. Bo Bichette has a player option, but multiple reports say he’s not expected to opt-out. On Nov. 2, the same day players can being to sign with new teams, players who finished the 2026 season on the 60-day injured list return to the 40-man roster count.

The Mets currently have a full 40-man roster and they have three players on the 60-day IL. Meaning, before the deadline on Nov. 2, the Mets will have to remove three players from the 40-man roster.

As I was finishing this article, the Mets claimed utility player Kyren Paris off waivers and designated Cristian Pache for assignment. They will still need to remove three players.

Here is the Mets’ current 40-man roster:

Pitchers

Weston and Abner were late season waiver claims, though Weston pitched well in Triple-A Syracuse (6.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 10 K) in limited time.

Catchers

Infielders

Wagaman and Morel both struggled at the major league level with the Mets. Cairo was a waiver claim.

Outfielders

Designated Hitter

My guess would be see some combo of two of Wagaman, Morel and Cairo removed and probably a pitcher with Abner being the most vulnerable. That simply gets the Mets to a full 40 before what’s expected to be a busy offseason that includes them needing to add guys like Jefferson Rojas, Jacob Reimer, Zach Franklin, Gary Gill Hill and maybe more to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft (that likely doesn’t happen).
