Luis Torrens by Roberto Carlo

2026 Review

Since the New York Mets acquired Luis Torrens in the middle of the 2024 season, he has been one of the more unsung heroes of the team. He’s arguably been the best trade move David Stearns has made as President of Baseball Operations, acquired for cash. Torrens has consistently stepped in and has been comfortable as the backup catcher role. In 2026, his value went up more.

The Mets have hoped that Francico Alvarez would mold into the club’s franchise catcher, but injuries and struggles have slowed and lowed those expectations. Torrens has been asked to come in for Alvarez over the years and play a bigger role. Last season, Torrens got more of an opportunity as Alvarez’s struggles really continued.

Behind the plate, Torrens was the Mets’ best defensive player, and he was one of the best defensive players in baseball. He was the best defensive catcher in baseball according to DRS (defensive runs saved) of 12. Good for third in all of baseball in DRS. He had a DRS of 11 in 2025. His Fielding Run Value was 10. When it came to throwing out runners on base, Torrens caught 10 of them.

Offensively, Torrens isn’t known for his bat. But Torrens had a little pop in his bat this season for the Mets. His nine home runs was the most he hit in a season since 2021 with the Seattle Mariners. Torrens hit 15 that season for Seattle.

His hottest stretch of the season came from August 4-22. Torrens played in 10 games with six home runs, 13 RBIs and 11 hits. He batted .440, an OBP of .517, a slugging of 1.160 and an 1.677 OPS. Overall, he played a very solid backup role with flashes of great offense. That’s enough to earn Torrens a B+.

2027 Outlook

Expect more of the same role for Torrens in 2027 as the backup catcher who starts every now and then. Before his offensive hot streak, the Mets and Torrens agreed on a two-year, $11.5 million contract extension.

Barring a move by the Mets front office, Alvarez will be the starting catcher once again with Torrens fielding him as the backup. Plus, the Mets are probably comfortable having Torrens as the backup and not as a full-time starter. Not to mention that the Mets have other important needs to address all around the roster.

When he is on the field, Torrens’ defense and prowess behind the plate is where is value truly shines. A veteran catcher like Torrens should help a young Mets rotation of Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton, and Christian Scott. Jonah Tong as well if he gets a chance at the big league level in 2027.

Either way, Torrens in 2027 looks to continue to be an under the radar contributor for the Mets and one of the more underrated catchers in baseball.
