2026 Review

Tobias Myers was thought to be the sneaky steal in the Freddy Peralta-for-Brandon Sproat and Jett Williams trade in the 2025 offseason. After all, he posted a 3.00 ERA in 25 starts (27 games) during his 2024 rookie campaign. He followed that up with a 3.55 ERA in 2025, acting primarily as a long reliever for the Brewers. Unfortunately, Myers couldn’t translate those numbers with the Mets in 2026, putting up the worst numbers of his young career.

Myers started well, pitching to a 2.24 ERA through nine games in March/April. The Mets used him in at least two-plus innings in seven of the nine innings. However, once the calendar flipped to May, things turned sour for Myers. After posting a 6.43 ERA in 11 games in May for the Mets, the team optioned Myers to Triple-A, beginning a back-and-forth season between Syracuse and New York. In between his stints, Myers posted a 14.54 ERA in four games in June, a 6.75 ERA in two July games, and didn’t appear for the club in August. However, a September call-up saw Myers return to form, posting a 1.17 ERA in six games.

So, what gives into Myers’ poor 2026 campaign? His Baseball Savant page wasn’t exactly a sea of red in previous seasons, but the most noticeable change is the dip in his breaking pitch run value. In 2024, he posted a +4 breaking run value (75th percentile). In 2025, that dipped to +3 (65th percentile). However, in 2026, his breaking run value was -5 (17th percentile). Myers drastically increased his split-finger usage in 2026; it was his second-most used pitch this season, while he used it fourth-most in 2025. Hitters struggled against it, though (.146 BA, .160 xBA).

Myers’ slider took the most damage in 2026. After hitters mustered a .167 BA (.239 xBA) against the pitch in 2025, batters hit .333 (.281 xBA) against it in 2026.

2027 Preview

Myers didn’t do enough in 2026 to secure his spot on the Mets’ roster in 2027. Unfortunately, the team used its final option on him in the 2026 campaign, so all but likely, Myers will begin the season in the bullpen. The bullpen is one of the more fascinating parts for the Mets to construct this offseason, as they essentially dismantled it during the trade deadline. However, plenty of players emerged as long-term solutions across the latter half of the season, including the likes of Nate Lavender and Jonathan Pintaro.

The Mets will want to use Myers in the role they originally saw for him, an ultimate swingman, who can pitch where needed, whenever needed. Myers’ September was encouraging. If the team can get that version out of him consistently, they’ll have a solid core piece of their bullpen for the next handful of seasons.
