World Baseball Classic & The State of the Mets
World Baseball Classic On Saturday I attended the USA/Canada game of the World Baseball Classic. The game was close, with the United States pulling out the win 6-5. It wasn’t the best day to wear a David Wright jersey though, as he went 0-4. JJ Putz pitched the ninth and got the save, giving up 1 run. I enjoyed the game a lot. I was impressed with the Canadian fans – they were a lot [...]

Are Mets Back In Market For Lefty Reliever?
After the Mets released Duaner Sanchez, it was assumed by many that he would be replaced by one of the many candidates in camp. However, Marty Noble of mets.com gave an interesting answer in his mailbag today that leads me to believe Omar is not done shopping. Minaya indicated Tuesday the club may look at available left-handed relievers now that the release of Sanchez has created a need. My sense of it was that the [...]

There Are Three Times When It’s Okay To Lie About Your Age
As far as I’m concerned there are only three times when it is okay to lie about your age. 1. It’s okay for women to say they are 29 instead of 30, it’s an emotional plateau for them and if it makes them feel good, why not. 2. It’s okay to lie about your age if you were only 18 years old and you really needed a fifth of Absolut vodka after seeing the Mets choke in [...]

Mets Sign Nine Including Dan Murphy
The Mets took care of some business today and signed the following nine players for the 2009 season. Dan Murphy – $401,000 (Will get close to 425 AB this season barring a disaster.) Nick Evans – $403,000 (I wonder why he got more than Murphy?) Robinson Cancel – $408,000 (I think he will get 80-100 at-bats this season) Rocky Cherry – $406,000 (I feel like running to Dairy Queen when I read this guys name.) Sean Green – $471,000 [...]

Steve Phillips Weighs In On Pedro and Pudge
Former Mets GM and current ESPN analyst Steve Phillips gave his thoughts on Pedro Martinez last night, and even though there’s no chance the Mets would pursue him, I found what he had to say very interesting. After watching Martinez last year, I had real doubts whether he’d be a competitive major league pitcher again. But after seeing his two three-inning outings at the World Baseball Classic, the second of which came on two days’ rest, [...]

Mets Are Justified In Staying Away From Pedro
Mets fans may be clamoring for the return of Pedro Martinez but management is not. I agree with team brass, not because I love the candidates for the fifth starting slot, but does anyone believe he could hold up to the rigors of a full season when he has broken apart at the seams the last two plus? If Pedro were the prideful athlete he would play this season for the major league minimum [...]

The Final Spots In The Bullpen
This year’s bullpen is shaping up to be one of the best in recent memory for Mets fans. On paper, it is a marvel to look at it and though the final pieces have yet to be etched in stone, the possibilities all look so promising. Here is how the bullpen looks so far: Closer – Francisco Rodriguez (signed as a free agent)Setup – J.J. Putz (acquired from Seattle)Short Reliever – Sean Green (acquired from Seattle)LH Reliever [...]

Circle Of Love – Duaner, Omar, Jerry
Good evening MetsMerizers! I woke up this morning feeling pretty good and the first thing I see on SI.com is an article about how Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya are at odds over Duaner Sanchez being released. Granted, the article was taken from the NY post so I’m sure it’s a bit exaggerated. The Mets got tired of his arm to come around and it just didn’t happen. I’m sure he’ll latch on somewhere. Omar [...]

Cory Sullivan Isn’t Messing Around
Cory Sullivan has adopted a take no prisoners approach to spring training this season. Even though he signed a major league contract in January to play with the Mets, he is taking no chances. He’s not walking around with a sense of entitlement believing that he doesn’t have to try hard because he is a lock to make the team. When the Mets first signed Sullivan I thought it was a very curious move. It was not long [...]
