Heyman: Giants Re-Sign Angel Pagan

Jon Heyman os CBS Sports is now reporting that the deal between the Giants and Pagan is finalized pending a physical. Heyman reports that the deal is for four years, and Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports says the deal is worth $40 million.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reporting that the defending champion San Francisco Giants are nearing a deal to bring back free agent outfielder Angel Pagan. The deal is not yet finalized, and Rosethal is not sure if the deal is going to be for three of four years. Rosenthal reports that he believes the annual value of the contract will end up being north of $10 million dollars.

Earlier today the Phillies were believed to be in the running to land Pagan, but believed his contract demands were to high.

  • It’s final. Four years, $40 million.

    • good for him getting paid.

      • Yeah, he’s laughing all the way to the bank…

    • the salary is just reflective of the current nature of FA. To me, the years are a little more surprising. Certainly a good deal for him, and nothing harmful to the Giants (not after they lived through Rowand!)

  • …and laughing all the way to another post season possibly. Seems we always forget that now, now it’s the World Series of money they’re more interested in

As for the deal? Not bad. Not an unreasonable amount of money at all.

  • I’ve seen Mets fans on other blogs ripping this move and ripping Pagan. We are a wild bunch. To say this guy is undervalued would be an understatement. No one is saying he is a superstar, but a solid MLB OF is nothing to scoff at. He would be our best OFer right now, his contract is pretty reasonable, and he would be an asset and not a black hole in our sorry OF.

    • We’re a wild bunch because were desperate to win. Its NY for pete’s sake. The product we’re putting out there is a joke compared to the Yankees. And what is SA doing about it? Nothing!!!

      • The Yankee…get a grip. Times are changing. At present, their 3rd baseman is out for 6 months; SS recovering from a broken ankle; they have no RF; they are stuck going with young players at C. And 2 of their starting pitchers are 38 and 40 respectively.

        • This gives me some hope, its inevitable though, the yanks need to get younger. Times are changing but still, the Mets aren’t doing anything! They’re just sitting there trying to pry top prospects from teams for R.A. Dickey!!! Seriously, teams would be stupid to do that.

      • The product we’re putting out is a joke to the Marlins as well …..lol

        • No a joke to the Astros! Hahaha

        • I guess neither of you actually watch baseball because neither of those teams should be laughing at anyone.

  • Not a bad deal for Pagan at all or the Giants for that matter.

  • Very happy he didn’t go to Philly.

    • I predicted at the end of the season that they were going big after Bourne (their former property, and still a team favorite). Looking even more likely now.

  • Hairston to the Tigers!!??

    • Rubin is saying no. they offered a deal, but he didn’t take it.

  • wow sandy, know soria is close to signing with Texas….. We’re just sitting there trying to trade a 38 year old pitcher lol

  • Thank God.

  • I’m happy for Pagan. He was a nice player for the Mets, and I enjoyed watching him play here. Yes, he wasn’t a perfect player and he did have a poor season in 2011, but overall he was a nice player, and it’s good to see him have success with SF.

  • Bored…. Not much going on in Metsville today. Time to watch MLB Tonight lol.

    • yep, and ever notice when watching Hot Stove or MLB Tonight they talk with and about every other team but the Mets. You know Omar would be on if he was here but the Mets have probably the most unpopular GM of the lot and he’s holed up with Google Boy going over secret statistical data while other teams are talking to each other in real time, talking about trading human beings.

      • That’s actually true its like the Mets don’t exist. Also on Intentional Talk, the Mets are rarely referenced.

        • Ya, because those shows and the media never ever whiff on deals.

And if it doesn’t happen day 1 of the Winter Meetings, it won’t happen….right?

          • So when its february and the only moves we made were resigning Wright + Dickey…what are you going to say then?

  • I’m noticing Giants fans a little skeptical here as it is reminding them a bit of the Aubrey Huff contract after the WS.

A good point that I saw

Why didn’t they just tender him a qualifying offer at 1 yr for 13? Not saying he would have signed it, but his market value would have dropped a bit if teams felt they had to give up a pick no?

    • How skeptical are Mets fans about Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez? You have any links? Alderson got SMOKED!

    • If Hairston is getting offered around $4-5M per year as a platoon corner outfielder, then I would think a starting centerfielder is worth about $10M – Upton is getting about $15M so Pagan really wasn’t overpaid by much if at all.

  • That would suck if Angel turns out to be the Giants’ next Aubrey Huff. I doubt it though. Still watching MLB Tonight and they barely have said anything about the Mets… I guess it’s just because we’re not expected to contend this season and we’re we’re expected to go after a Hamilton/Grienke type FA. It kind of annoying cause we’re talking about a big market team here (or at least what used to be). I just hope they can find a way to win soon. Hoping for them to pull an Orioles/Athletics season but may be asking for too much lol.

    • There’s your Mets reference. LMAO! Sandy Alderson seen scurrying around the hallways.

  • According to this SFGiants web site fans seem to be happy about the signing of Pagan and the 9 fans (so far) that commented all 9 were extremely happy about the signing.

  • Good for Angel but I think they overpaid.

    • LMAO if u think they overpaid for Pagan…imagine what folks are saying about the contract we gave for David Wright

  • Ten Million a year? Boy, I thought we screwed up on some FA signings…. Sabean is a close second.

    • Sabean has 2 rings in the past 4 years

I think he’s earned the right to resign the guy labeled the most under-rated player in all of baseball by fangraphs to a 4 year / 40 mil deal

  • If the Mets are going to bring in an outfielder to a good sized deal, he should either have right handed power or play above average defense.

Pagan does neither. That isn’t to say he’s a bad player, just that he doesn’t fill any immediate needs.

  • the mets should look to the Giants as their model. Just keep piling up itching prospects and good things will happen. The Giants could not put up big offensive numbers but they won.
