The “reimagined Players’ Weekend” will feature special caps, customized bats, and personalized cleats, emphasizing the players’ off-field impact. The nicknames usually reserved for players that weekend will not adorn the jerseys for the festivities.

Tim Healey of Newsday reports that the Yankees have claimed Michael Tonkin off waivers from the Mets. This is the second time this season Tonkin has been waived by the Mets, previously being claimed by the Twins, only to be re-acquired by the Mets after Minnesota designated him for assignment.

1988: Keith Hernandez reached 1000 career RBIs on this date back in 1988. Facing then-Braves rookie Tom Glavine in the fifth inning of a close 4-2 game, Keith smashed a game-tying two-run homer. Adding to his heroics, he drove in another run with a ground out in the seventh inning and culminated his performance with a grand slam off reliever Charlie Puleo in the next inning. This strong performance earned Hernandez seven RBIs for the night, including the game-winning run batted in, and marked a significant milestone in his career as he surpassed the 1,000 RBI mark.
