  I dont believe Sandy has had full autonomy on big ticket decisions. If Jason Bay doesnt approach Sandy about deferring Salary…Sandy Alderson doesnt have the ability to release Jason Bay….

  The same went for Omar…

  Since Nelson Doubleday sold his other half…we’ve been set up for failure

  I am starting to think it is the same as Dolan and Donnie. Sometimes the owner overrides the GM. The signings are counter to SA’s philosophy. The owners are worried and rightfuly so the fanbase will disappear as during the Donald Grant days. The British priminister Chamberlain tried appeasement but it lead to disasterous results. If you cater to the fans you will become one of them.

    We are not watching a movie with 25 Oscar-Award Winning Actors…

    We are watching a competitive sports team with 25 athletes

    the mets sell the sports team, the way a studio markets a movie…

    One guy is the focal point, the main actor….in this case, its been David Wright…

    RA Dickey, Johan Santana, Wagner, K-Rod, Jose Reyes, Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran were his supporting actors….

    Everyone else is just a bit actor or an extra

    You cant promote the supporting actors over your main actor….

    This is why I said, if David Wright was pudgy, surly, face full of acne, bad with the media…he can be the same player, but more of an emphasis would be placed on his production than him being an “ambassador”…we would see his past 4 years in a microscope…the way most players are

  One could get the impression that Alderson doesn’t have complete say in these negotiations based on the comments made by Jeff Wilpon. If that indeed is the case, then the culture change that was supposed to be brought about by the hiring of Sandy Alderson has not taken place and was never going to happen as long as Jeff Wilpon is around. Now, the owners have every right to be informed and involved about the goings on with the team. After all, it’s their money being spent to operate the team. And they do have a responsibility to understand how their GM wants to spend their money so that they can ultimately do what’s in the best interest, short and long term, for the organization.

  However, Jeff Wilpon seems to go well beyond all of that and tries to run the ship himself. It’s as though he thinks running a ML organization is as easy as running a fantasy league team. I think that’s exactly how he operates. He thinks he knows as much about baseball as the GM and their collective staffs. Doesn’t matter if the GM is Steve Phillips, Jim Duquette, Omar Minaya, or Sandy Alderson. Wilpon seems to think he knows as much about negotiating contracts and making trades as the men he hired to do that very job.

  Someone needs to build Jeff a big sandbox somewhere where he can go play so that he’ll leave the running of the Mets to people infinitely more qualified to do so than he. Nothing will ever change with the Mets, culture included, as long as Jeff Wilpon feels the need to interfere and interject himself constantly in the day to day running of the baseball operations of the Mets.

  This is the thing with Wilpon’s statement. He makes a statement and you have it then followed with questions or opinions of who has autonomy or not.

  Like all GM’s one would expect they can’t make large financial decisions without running it past ownership for approval. In this case that Jeff Wilpon made a statement on the matter I’d be cautious to equate that to Alderson following a Wilpon plan in regards to how to best proceed with said players if they are unable to sign them.

  I am of the opinion that as with many GM/ownership relationships there is a little bit of both in how much ownership is willing to spend and how far a GM is willing to go when it involves contract negotiations but as always ownership can ultimately make the final call.

  As far as the Stark story I thought this was the opinion for sometime now. Mets would prefer to sign them and would consider trading them if they could not with the opinion that they would probably be more active in considering the trade angle by the Winter meetings.

  Last year I bought a variety of tickets for the 50th anniversary, hoping that the Mets might show some promise. This year I am sitting tight until the ownership shows some promise of assembling a winning team. Spend some money and keep Wright and Dickey and get some major league outfielders and catchers. Only then will I spend my money.

  My own hunch is that Sandy runs the show and the Wilpons, despite being the owners, have to heed to to his decisions based on an understanding that involved the owners, the commissioner and Sandy himself tied into the unusual intervention taken by the commissioner to help anyone, let alone his personal friends the Wilpons, retain ownership. The situation had to be of an extreme sense for this was not Kansas City but a New York franchise that twice could not meet in monthly operating expenses and whose ability to pay off it’s debts and expenses remains a question mark for next season based on whose report one reads and trying to read between the lines of Sandy’s own conversations on the subject.

  That is just a guess on my part but from what we know of and have observed on the behavior and actions of the Wilpons in the past is that they would have not sent Krod and Beltran packing in 2011 when the Mets were in the hunt for the wildcard. They would not have considered them “sellers” at that point in years past, even if players were in their walk years or overpaid. They also would not have wanted Jose to leave and would have at least made attempts to reach an agreement (despite the words Fred said when a bit tipsy in that New Yorker interview). They would also not go from “buyers” to “sellers” in a period of two weeks as we saw happened in 2012.

  The way the Mets handled things in terms of not staying competitive goes against every action we’ve seen taken by the Wilpons in the past.

  There was also the case on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 that the Wilpons were concerned of not complying completely with the commissioner’s directives that they went so far as to re-state to the players they were not to wear any special caps during the game even though some still expressed the desire to do so. They even ordered David Wright in the dugout during the fourth inning to remove the cap he was wearing while just sitting on the bench. The urgency they felt not to go against the commissioner – instead of bending the rules this being in New York, where the tragedy struck and so many live’s were lost and affected – resulted in an onslaught of public anguish against the Met organization and friction between the Mets and Joe Torre when the Mets tried to say it was on the orders of MLB.

  So with the Wilpons taking steps so uncharacteristic of them in two wildcard races – getting rid of players as well as just standing by and doing nothing more – there is reason to speculate that Sandy has final authority even over them in calling the shots. That had to be the understanding between them and the commissioner then and still be since they will still probably need his help in the future.

  Let’s acknowledge something – the marriage between the Wilpons and Sandy Alderson is one of two so completely opposite of the other that Felix and Oscar even seem more compatible. When the Mets were conducting interviews for the GM position, one thing emphasized was that the one who was hired had to fit into the Mets mode of running the operation. Sandy could not have been any more geometrically different of the candidate they were seeking.

  Was he not therefore forced upon them and if so, with certain conditions?
