Marlins Sign Outfielder Juan Pierre

According to multiple sources, Juan Pierre has agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract.

The 35-year-old outfielder will be making his second stint with the organization, offering veteran leadership, a tremendous work ethic and speed.

Pierre appeared in 130 games with the Phillies in 2012, batting .307 with 37 stolen bases.

Entering his 14th big league season, Pierre previously was with the Marlins in 2003-05. He set the franchise single-season stolen-base record of 65 in ’03, when he batted .305 and scored 100 runs.

The Marlins traded Pierre to the Cubs after the 2005 season in a deal that brought Ricky Nolasco to Miami. Nolasco has since become the organization’s all-time wins leader.

Pierre is a career .297 hitter who has 2,141 hits and 591 stolen bases.

  • This may sound crazy but what if the Marlins win more games this year? What does that say? How do other teams respond?

  • If players like Pierre are getting this kind of money, Hairston will get twice that. His Mets days are over.

  • As I said in July, he should have been traded. Sandy Alderson is an idiot.

  • Breaking news: Juan Pierre traded to Milwaukee for Bernie Brewer.

    • For $1.6MM, I’d take Juan Pierre in our OF for 2013.

      • He’s 35, a lousy fielder and has no power. No thanks.

        • he hit .307 and had 37 SB last year.

When they had him in the 2 hole, he hit .339

Not that I would advocate signing any veteran over playing the kids…but Juan Pierre would’ve automatically leaped to the top of the org chart if he came to the mets..

          • No. Power.

            Crappy. Fielder.

Yes, he hit better than anyone presently in the outfield. But that is a low bar. We’re at a point where “better than what we have” is not going to cut it. We should be focused on “actually good”.

    • I notice that every player who signs or is traded to any team but the Mets, Mr Donal applauds not getting. I guess Donal thinks the Mets have the best players at every position. Why then Donal do the Mets suck?

  • I guess he was out of our price range….
Either that or he had a horrible PPPA

    • You presume he would have any interest in the Mets.

      • Nah, all we have to do is offer the same contract to any FA and they would instantly choose us over the other team. The problem is of course we don’t talk to one single FA the entire off-season because we aren’t trying to win…

  • so much for that ” who would ever sign with Miami” theory….

  • Another one of the so-called “cheap” free agent signings that were still too much for the Mets. Those “experts” that predicted the Mets would sign Melky were obviously wrong, and the one who said the Mets would sign Victorino is certain to be wrong, too. If we also believe the market for Dickey is not as strong as anticipated and that Hairston has priced himself out of the Mets’ comfort zone, look for a starting outfield of Baxter, Nieuwenhuis, and Duda.

    • The problem with Pierre is what would the Mets do with him? He can’t play CF in Citi anymore and he is also LH which even if he could play CF would take time away from guys like Kirk and DD. But of course when in Rome, insult the Emperor. It’s just the cool thing to do.
