DJ Stewart Makes The Team

Stewart, whom the Mets signed to a minor league contract last year, was called up in July and surprised many people. From August 15th to October 1st, Stewart slashed .269/.346/.580 with an OPS of .926. Stewart hit 10 home runs, 32 hits, and 23 RBIs in that stretch. He was a bright spot in a season full of disappointments. His performance earned him a chance at the 2024 club.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza announced on Wednesday that Stewart had made the team. Stewart didn’t have the strongest spring training, batting .175, but his skills as a left-handed designated hitter fit the Mets well. He is expected to get opportunities as the DH until Martinez is ready.

J.D. Martinez Staying in PSL, For Now

Speaking of Martinez, the new Mets skipper also commented on the status of his soon-to-be everyday designated hitter. Mendoza said that Martinez would stay in Port St. Lucie for the “next week or so.” Mendoza continued, “He’s getting a lot of at-bats. We’re getting reports every day. He’s facing our minor-league pitching. Yesterday, I was told he got like six at-bats off of Adrian Houser, who stayed back and pitched six innings.”

Martinez will stay there for the next ten days, and then they’ll see if he needs more time or if he’s ready to play on the Mets and be slotted into the lineup.

New York has 29 players remaining on the active roster, but that includes pitchers Kodai Senga and Max Kranick, who both will be placed on the injured list. So one more player must be trimmed before the Mets take on the Brewers at Citi Field on Thursday.

Voit, who played for the Brewers and Triple-A Syracuse last season, was 4-for-34 this spring with one home run and 14 strikeouts. Bickford, who had a 4.95 ERA in 67 1/3 innings combined between the Mets and Dodgers, this spring surrendered three runs and five hits over 4 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts.

Bickford will get 45 days of termination pay, which is $217,000, as Tim Healey of Newsday pointed out. He won his $900,000 contract in arbitration, so it wasn’t fully guaranteed. This is similar to J.D. Davis’ situation when the Giants cut him.

What Roster Cuts Are Left?

After Senga and Kranick hit the IL, the Mets will have 27 players on the active roster spot. That last move will come down to the bullpen. Yohan Ramírez is a potential candidate to be cut from the roster. (Metsmerized previously incorrectly reported that Ramírez has an option. He does not.)

The Mets have also seemingly shown a willingness to add a veteran bat as they wait for J.D. Martinez to be ready. DJ Stewart has a minor-league option, too.

Moves Follow More Cuts Made This Week

The Mets announced yesterday that they released pitchers Peyton Battenfield and Chad Smith. Battenfield, who had a 5.19 ERA in 34 2/3 innings with Cleveland last year, pitched two scoreless innings. Smith, who had a 6.59 ERA in 13 2/3 innings with Oakland last year, gave up one run in 1 2/3 innings.

The contract totals $12 million, but is broken out to benefit the Mets. Martinez’s base salary for the 2024 season is set at $2 million, and has $7.5 million deferred, which will be paid in $1.5 million installments from 2034-2038. He also received a $2.5 million signing bonus.

The Mets assigned Martinez to the minors and can’t be recalled for 10 days. This allows Martinez to get at-bats before joining the Mets in the majors.

Carlos Mendoza spoke to the media on Saturday regarding Martinez, stating that the slugger will need at least 15 days to get ready for the 2024 season. This trajectory puts Martinez making his Mets’ debut against the Braves on April 8. Mendoza also stated he is giving up his No. 28 jersey to Martinez.

To make room for Martinez on the roster, the Mets designated Phil Bickford for assignment. Bickford had a 5.79 ERA with seven strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings this spring. He signed a one-year, $900,000 contract in the offseason with the Mets.

Bickford wasn’t the only roster move announced today. The Mets optioned Shintaro Fujinami and reassigned Austin Adams, according to Will Sammon of the Athletic.

Sammon also tweeted that the Mets informed Tomás Nido, Luke Voit, and Jose Iglesias they weren’t making the team. Voit and Iglesias were both signed to minor league deals in the offseason, while Nido is in the last year of his two-year, $3.7 million contract.

With the moves, the Mets stand at 31 players on the active roster. That leaves at least one more round of cuts left before Opening Day on March 28.

• OF Trayce Thompson

It’s a tough day for a player like Thompson, who did make some noise at the start of spring. He hit two home runs and drove in 6 RBI on six hits this spring, including a grand slam in a game against the Washington Nationals. However, he struck out 11 times in 26 plate appearances and batted .250 with a .308 OBP. Thompson, now 33 years old, needed to make more noise to give himself a chance for a roster spot. It was going to be tough for him to make it with Tyrone Taylor and potentially D.J. Stewart as depth pieces in the outfield. Sanchez only batted .200 in 26 plate appearances, and Gamel batted .182 this spring.

Other Players On The Bubble

Several players are currently on the bubble, with their performances in spring training potentially determining their fate.

Luke Voit and Ji-Man Choi, who will soon have opt-outs, are among them. Choi has had an impressive spring, showcasing his hitting skills with a .771 OPS and solid defense at first base. Voit, a familiar face to the Mets, recently hit his first home run of the spring. José Iglesias, who hit walk-off home run against the Miami Marlins, and Zach Short, who stepped up in the absence of Jeff McNeil, are also players to watch.

In the bullpen, Sean-Reid Foley is competing for a spot and hasn’t allowed a hit in four shutout innings of work. Phil Bickford, meanwhile, has been up-and-down coming off a tough 2023. Yohan Ramirez, who is out of options, has thrown six shutout innings with six strikeouts. Shintaro Fujinami continues to have command issues, and Jorge López has been inconsistent. José Butto is another name to look out for to make the Opening Day roster.

Eight Games Left

With the clock ticking and only nine days left until Opening Day, these players on the bubble have only eight games remaining, including tonight’s game, to make their case for the roster. Mets management will have some interesting decisions to make in the coming days.

The team has until Opening Day to finalize its 26-man roster, and there are few open spots.

The Mets played in some split-squad action, with one game being played against the Marlins at Clover Park while the rest of the team played against the Nationals in Palm Beach. In the road game, Luke Voit hit his first homer of the spring, Joey Wendle collected three hits, and Omar Narváez drove in two runs, but a four-run sixth inning against Austin Adams gave the Nationals a 9-8 win. Tylor Megill had a rocky outing on the mound, allowing five hits and four runs with just one strikeout in 3 2/3 innings.

In the home game, José Quintana got knocked around for eight hits and six runs (four earned) in 4 1/3 innings, but Mark Vientos‘ three-run homer and Harrison Bader‘s solo shot helped erase a 6-1 deficit. José Iglesias capped the day with a walk-off homer, giving the Mets a 7-6 win. Edwin Díaz pitched a scoreless inning of relief, and Tyler Jay tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the win.

The Mets have an off day today before the Cardinals come to Port St. Lucie on Tuesday night. The Mets have yet to announce a starter for that game.

When asked about the state of the current roster, Steve Cohen said it’s up to David Stearns whether or not the team adds before Opening Day, but he suggested that the team is unlikely to make any other moves. Cohen added that he thinks the Mets’ defense and bullpen are much improved, which he thinks can help keep the team competitive this season. Cohen also praised the team’s farm system, and says he thinks it’s starting to look “stacked.”

BIG LEAGUE STARTER

MARK VIENTOS

Age: 24 (12/11/1999)

Contract: Pre-Arbitration Eligible

Roster Status: 40-Man Roster

MiLB Options: 1

2024 Preview

Mark Vientos had his first lengthy taste of the major leagues last year, and it’s safe to say he was a bit underwhelming. Vientos played in 65 games for the Mets in 2023, 37 of which came at the designated hitter spot, while he slashed .211/.253/.367 with a 69 wRC+ over 233 plate appearances.

Vientos has shown considerable power during his time in the bigs up to this point, however, smacking 10 home runs in his career through 274 plate appearances.

Vientos is currently tied with Francisco Lindor for the most at-bats on the team this spring with 32, meaning the Mets are staying true to their word of giving the youngster every opportunity to prove himself and take a firm hold of the designated hitter role. The team is obviously intrigued to see if the 24-year-old can improve his bat-to-ball skills and lower his strikeout rate, though so far there hasn’t been much proof his numbers are turning around as he is sporting a .206 average with eight strikeouts to his name, tied for the third-most on the team.

Still, Vientos is on pace for a better year in 2024 as Steamer projects him to record a slightly above average wRC+ of 108. We aren’t far off from him being one of the top prospects in the system and he showed why he carries that pedigree after hitting for a 143 wRC+ during 61 games with Triple-A Syracuse last season.

The DH spot is quite flexible this year with a lot of players set to swap in and out of the roll. Vientos will look to cement himself as a primary option while the Mets look to learn what kind of player he will ultimately become in 2024.

JI MAN CHOI

Age: 32 (5/19/1991)

Contract: Split

Roster Status: Not on 40-man roster

MiLB Options: n/a

2024 Preview

The good news with Ji Man Choi is that we’re just two years removed from the Tampa Bay Rays version of him that fans grew to love. In 2022, the power-hitting lefty recorded a 115 wRC+ with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs while amassing 1.2 fWAR in 113 games.

Choi only played in 39 games last season, however, suffering an Achillies strain with the Pittsburgh Pirates before dealing with a rib strain and Lisfranc fracture as a member of the San Diego Padres. As a result, he endured one of the worst campaigns of his career, hitting .163/.239/.385.

The Mets took a chance on the 32-year-old and his long track record this offseason, signing him to a split contract that would earn him up to $3.5 million. The gamble has paid off so far this spring as he is slashing .263/.440/.526, good for a .966 OPS.

Choi’s spot on the Opening Day roster is far from secured, but he’s making as good of a case as anyone for an inclusion considering the state of flux the designated hitter spot is in for the Mets.

UPPER-LEVEL DEPTH

LUKE VOIT

Age: 33 (2/13/1991)

Contract: Minor league

Roster Status: Not on 40-man roster

MiLB Options: n/a

2024 Preview

Entering his second year with the Mets organization, Luke Voit is still fighting to secure a roster spot with the big-league club in Queens.

Voit’s last appearance in the show came with the Milwaukee Brewers last season where he struggled to the tune of a .221/.284/.265 slash line with a 53 wRC+ over 74 plate appearances. He was later released by the club before latching on with New York on a minor league deal last June as he spent the remainder of 2023 with Triple-A Syracuse. Voit proved to be one of the team’s best hitters, slashing .264/.415/.643 with a 157 wRC+ and 14 home runs in 37 games, though he never got the call to the big leagues despite the Mets’ incessant turmoil with their cast of designated hitters.

This spring, however, Voit’s talents have not yet shown. In 23 plate appearances, he’s tallied just two hits and two walks to go with a team-high 10 strikeouts while sporting a .279 OPS.

Nevertheless, Voit has showcased desirable power numbers throughout his major league career with 95 home runs, and if he can tap back into that well, he has the potential to emerge as a dangerous weapon for the middle of the order.

COMING SOON

RYAN CLIFFORD

Age: 20 (7/20/2003)

Contract: Minor League

Roster Status: Not on 40-man roster

MiLB Options: 3

2024 Preview

By soon, we mean pretty far off. However, Ryan Clifford is definitely a prospect to be excited about.

MLB.com currently ranks Clifford as the Mets’ No. 4 prospect and No. 97 overall, and for good reason.

The Mets received Clifford in the Justin Verlander trade with the Houston Astros at last year’s trade deadline. Before that, Clifford was tearing up the lower levels in Houston’s farm system during the 2023 campaign, hitting for a 175 wRC+ in the Carolina League with Single-A Fayetteville before slashing .271/.356/.547 to go with 16 home runs across 58 games with High-A Asheville.

He did struggle after landing with the Mets as he hit .188/.307/376 in 32 games with High-A Brooklyn, but his raw power numbers are something to be excited about. Clifford specializes at the first base and corner outfield positions, but he’s a potential fit in the designated hitter role as well.

Keep an eye on the lefty slugger as he progresses this year as he could be a real threat down the line.

The post Mets 2024 Positional Outlook: Designated Hitter appeared first on Metsmerized.

Voit was drafted by the Cardinals in 2013 and made his major league debut in 2017. He was traded at the 2018 trade deadline to the Yankees where he made a name for himself. Voit had a solid 2019 campaign slashing .263/.378/.464 (124 OPS+) while hitting 21 home runs. The following season, he led the league with 22 long balls (2020 was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic) and had 157 OPS+.

Luke Voit. Photo via Buffalo Bisons

The Yankees traded him during spring training in 2022 to the Padres who later traded him in the massive trade for Juan Soto. Voit finished the season with the Nationals and spent time last year in the Brewers and the Mets organization.

The 2020 season saw Luke Voit at the top of a lot of percentile rankings. He was in the 96th percentile for batting run value, 92nd for xwOBA, 81st for xBA and 95th for xSLG.

In 2021 and 2022, Voit was still an average power hitter according to OPS+; 109 and 104, respectively. However, things fell off in 22 games with the Brewers where he slashed .221/.284/.265 (53 OPS+) with no home runs. Strikeouts have always been a concern with Voit and in 2023 he reached a new high, striking out 36.5% of the time. A switch flipped after he signed with the Mets. In Syracuse (Triple-A), he smashed 14 home runs over 37 games hitting .264/.415/.643. At the start of August he opted out of his contract so he could find an opportunity to play on a major league roster.

He’s now back with the Mets competing for a spot on the roster. He’s going to be directly competing with Ji-man Choi for a depth spot as either a designated hitter option or backup first basemen. This competition is probably going to run the length of camp. Unless, Choi or Voit get an opportunity to play on a different team.

So far in spring, Voit is 1-for-13 with five strikeouts. Not an ideal start, that is for sure.

The post Mets 2024 Non-Roster Invitee Preview: Luke Voit appeared first on Metsmerized.

Over the last five days, the Mets have signed Ji-Man Choi and Luke Voit to contracts, adding competition to the position that includes Vientos and DJ Stewart. On top of that, the Mets will reportedly look into getting Starling Marte DH at-bats this year, and Pete Alonso has averaged 75 plate appearances a year at DH over the last two seasons.

Mark Vientos, Photo by Ed Delany of Metsmerized

All of a sudden, the position has become pretty saturated.

Let’s take a quick look at the main four players battling it out for DH at-bats:

• Mark Vientos: Vientos is the leading man for the role. David Stearns also said that Vientos will likely spend some time at third base. As far as competition, Vientos previously said, “I feel like it’s me against me. I’m not competing against any of my teammates. I’m just trying to be the best player I can be.”
• DJ Stewart: Stewart was one of the few lone bright spots at the MLB level the last two months of the 2023 season. He slashed .244/.333/.506/.840 over 185 plate appearances and earned himself a tendered contract. He can also play the corner outfield spots.
• Ji-Man Choi: Choi was one of the two beefy boys Stearns signed to contracts this week. Known for his prowess and stretches at first base, Choi was an above average hitter from 2018 to 2022. But his 2023 was pretty poor, and he spent most of it in Triple-A. He, like the next guy, could spell Alonso at first.
• Luke Voit: Luke Voit went on a tear in the Mets organization after coming over from the Brewers. In 37 games, he slashed .264/.415/.643/1.058. The Mets seemed to promise Voit that they’d either call him up or trade him around the deadline, but neither happened and the Mets cut him. He’s back to fill a similar role—first base power depth in the minor leagues.

All four will increase their chances of making the Opening Day roster by showing value in the field. This is where Vientos could have a leg up, given he’s the youngest of all four and, presumably, his offseason work at third base could start to show improvements on defense.

Mets spring training starts on Saturday, and all four will likely get ample playing time to state their case for making the MLB team out of spring.
