It is no secret that Ronny Mauricio has been sensational for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican Winter League. However, even after receiving LIDOM MVP honors a few weeks ago, he has somehow only gotten better.

Licey have jumped out to an impressive 5-2 record since the calendars turned over to 2023, improving to a 9-6 overall record that has them tied with Estrellas Orientales atop a four-team round-robin table in the Caribbean Series.

Mauricio has been a massive part of that success, hitting .333 (10-for-30) with five RBI and six runs scored in those seven games. He’s been drawing walks far more often than his career minor league numbers would suggest him capable of, and he has blossomed into one of the most feared hitters in a league heavily populated by current and former major leaguers.

It has not been entirely smooth sailing for Mauricio, as he committed three errors in Licey’s game on Sunday. He played most of this season at his primary position of shortstop, but he has been playing third base of late with Sergio Alcántara manning short. The transition has brought about some key miscues in the field for Mauricio, although in this recent stretch of games the errors were limited to one horrific night at the hot corner.

Still, Mauricio continues to make his mark in LIDOM, coming through in the biggest of moments for a Licey team that appears to be in prime position to advance to the championship series. The Mets have seen the 21-year-old Mauricio mature substantially during his time in the Dominican, setting up for an intriguing 2023 season for one of the organization’s highest-touted prospects.
