Francisco Álvarez participated in a Home Run Derby in Puerto Rico on Sunday and beat 2023 MLB derby champ Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Edwin Díaz was also in attendance at the event. The SauceGiving event was organized by rapper Eladio Carríon and also featured free clinics hosted by Rimas Sports.

Ronny Mauricio has been cleared to participate in this year’s Dominican Winter League season. Mauricio will join the Tigres del Licey soon.

The Mets reportedly signed free-agent pitcher Carlos Guzman to a minor league contract. The 25-year-old spent 2023 in the Cubs’ organization, pitching to a 4.67 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 86 2/3 innings across three levels. He spent 2017-22 with the Tigers’ organization.

The Tigers are in agreement with free-agent righty Kenta Maeda on a two-year contract worth $24 million. Maeda missed all of 2022 after undergoing Tommy John surgery and returned to the Twins in 2023, posting a 4.23 ERA/4.02 FIP with 117 strikeouts in 104 1/3 innings. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported that Maeda’s contract will not include an opt-out.

The Angels have signed reliever Adam Kolarek to a one-year contract. The sidearming lefty pitched briefly for the Mets in 2023, 13 years after the team drafted him, and he went unscored upon in 4 2/3 innings before being designated for assignment.

1967: The Mets trade pitcher Bill Denehy and $100,000 to the Washington Senators in exchange for the team’s new skipper, Gil Hodges. The 43-year-old has spent the last five seasons as Washington’s manager and takes over in Flushing for Salty Parker, who managed the final 10 games of the season after Wes Westrum resigned.

1991: The Mets sign eight-time All-Star Eddie Murray to be their new first baseman. The 35-year-old is coming off a bit of a down year with the Dodgers, posting just a .724 OPS, though he still clubbed 19 homers, drove in 96 runs, and made the All-Star game.
