With the free agency period beginning at 5 p.m. ET on Monday, teams are making moves left and right in preparation. The Mets are no different. They’ve already made two moves, signing INF Christian Cairo to a one-year, major league deal. Later in the day, the team claimed RHP Jack Anderson off waivers from the Twins, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.
Cairo, 25, spent most of the 2026 season with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate before finishing with the Syracuse Mets. Between the two organizations, Cairo posted a .230/.381/.300 (.681 OPS) line through 130 games. Not a power hitter, he hit four home runs and drove in 36 runs while stealing 12 bases. Most notably, Cairo struck out just 76 times and walked 92 times. He saw time at second base, third base, left field and shortstop in 2026. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB, the deal is a split contract.
Anderson, 26, debuted in 2026 and spent time with both the Red Sox and Twins. In just seven games across both organizations, the right-hander posted a 2.19 ERA in 12.1 innings. He allowed 10 hits, three earned runs and walked three batters while striking out 12 hitters. He throws a four-seamer that averages around 90.8 mph and supplements the pitch with a split-finger, slider, sweeper and curveball. The split-finger was his nastiest pitch in 2026; he threw it 42 times and left hitters batting just .083 with an xBA of .118.
Anderson also appeared for team Great Britain in the World Baseball Classic. In one appearance he went three innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out three.
Per Will Sammon of The Athletic, the Marlins claimed RHP Cameron Weston off waivers from the Mets. Weston, 26, didn’t appear in a major league game for the Mets in 2026, but pitched to a 1.42 ERA in four games with the Syracuse Mets.
