The Mets return home tonight after a tough trip to Chicago where they were swept. The first game of the series really felt like one they should win, as did last night’s. Even through all of the chaos of losing three games in a row, we did see some positives that should give us hope going into this weekend with the Nationals. Pete Alonso homered in back to back days as he starts to become next Mets bat to heat up. James McCann really is an asset defensively with his arm. Reid-Foley looked really good in his Mets debut last night.

The three losses in a row stink – but hopefully the Mets can turn it around tonight against the Nationals.

The Mets and Nationals were supposed to open the series together when the Nationals had a Covid outbreak, cancelling all three games which kicked off the Mets bad luck with getting consistent playing time. The division is incredibly tight with the Phillies and the Mets both tied for first place with a .500 record and a the Nationals in last place, being two games under .500.

Jacob deGrom looks to put the team on his back again tonight. In three starts and 20.0 innings this year he has a 0.45 ERA, 1.35 FIP, 0.700 WHIP and a 858 ERA+. He’s coming off back to back 14 strikeout games leading to an absurd 28 strikeouts in 14 innings innings pitched. Last year he made only one start against the Nationals, allowing 3 runs over 5.0 innings from 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 10 batters. The Nationals have the following numbers against him:

His line is a bit misleading though. He opened up the season allowing 6 runs, 5 earned, over 1.2 innings. Since then he has allowed 2 runs over 9.2 innings.
