wilmer flores walkoff

The Mets (26-21) defeated the Phillies (19-29) at Citi Field on Tuesday for the second day in a row by a score of 5-4.

Pitching:

Jacob deGrom #deGrominated once again, going 7.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and no walks while striking out 9. He left the game in the 8th inning with runners on first and second with one out, both of whom eventually scored, both earned runs being charged to him. Man, he’s so good.

Hansel Robles came in in the 8th with runners on first and second base, promptly serving up a 2-RBI triple to Ben Revere, reducing the Mets lead to 3-2. The next batter Freddy Galvis then smacked a base hit to center field, scoring Revere and tying the game at 3.

He was relieved by Alex Torres who allowed a base hit to Chase Utley, but then struck out Ryan Howard. He was, in turn, relieved by Carlos Torres who gave up a base hit to rookie third baseman Maikel Franco, giving the Phillies a 4-3 lead.

After the Mets tied the game, Jeurys Familia tossed two scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two, allowing one hit. He got the win.

Offense:

For the second consecutive game, I have something to report in the “offense” section. Everyone had a hit except Eric Campbell, who remains freezing cold. He walked and struck out twice, extending his hitless streak to 22 at bats.

And now for the good stuff!

Kevin Plawecki went 2-4 after receiving a few days off, which is great to see. Daniel Murphy had a hit and a walk extending his hitting streak to 6 games, during which he is 10-21 (.476).

Lucas Duda went 1-3 with a hit, two walks and an RBI, scoring two runs. He gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead when he singled in Curtis Granderson in the 3rd inning. The Grandyman went 1-4 with a walk and a run scored.

After crushing a second deck home run last night, Michael Cuddyer had another big day at the plate going 2-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk. In the bottom of the third inning he slapped a base hit to left field with the bases loaded, giving the Mets an early 3-0 lead. Juan Lagares had a good day as well, going 1-4 with a walk and two runs scored.

When Wilmer Flores came up to the plate in the 10th inning with two outs, he had been 0-3 with a SAC fly to center field which tied the game at 4 in the 8th inning. However, every at bat he had hit the ball very hard, every ball could have been classified as a hard line-out. With runners on second and third base and two outs, Wilmah deposited a base hit into left field off Elvis Araujo, giving the Mets a 5-4 walk off win over the Phillies!

Notes:

After hitting 100 mph a few times the night before, Jeurys Familia has been throwing hard and continues to be lights out.

Jacob Degrom also continues his streak of deGrominance. His velocity also looks great, as his fastball routinely hits 97 mph these days, coupled with a 89-91 mph slider and a 84-86 mph changeup. Those numbers are pretty much ideal for an arsenal and it is showing in his results.

After homering last night and his two hits today, Michael Cuddyer seems to hopefully be emerging with the bat we’re paying him to yield. We’ll see.

Even though it’s baseball season and I shouldn’t be doing this, the Rangers beat the Lightning 7-3 to force a Game 7 at the Garden. #Baseballisbetter #Inmyopinion

On Deck:

The Mets will send Noah ‘Thor’ Syndergaard (1-2, 3.63 ERA) to the mound to counter the Phillies’ Sean O’Sullivan (1-3, 3.54 ERA) tomorrow at 1:10pm at Citi Field.
