Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reported recently that the New York Mets, along with the Texas Rangers, had a scout watching the start of New York Yankees top prospect Justus Sheffield.
Rumors have been swirling between the Yankees and Mets as the Bronx Bombers look to add a starting pitcher. The Mets have been listening to offers on Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard though it’s more likely they deal Zack Wheeler.
Sheffield, 22, went 5.1 innings of one-run ball and struck out seven for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with the Mets on hand. He lowered his season ERA to 2.44 in 85 innings this season between Double-A and Triple-A. He has allowed only 59 hits in that span and has struck out 95 batters compared to 38 walks.
Baseball America has the left-hander as Yankees No. 1 prospect and their No. 21 prospect in baseball. He was recently selected to the 2018 Futures Game roster.
