Las Vegas 1, Fresno 0
Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ home run to lead off the 10th inning was the only offense needed as the Las Vegas 51′s defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 1-0. Daisuke Matsuzaka went seven impressive innings not giving up a run and striking out eight en route to a no decision. The 51′s bullpen finished what Matsuzaka started and continued to stifle the Grizzlies the rest of the way securing the win. Josh Edgin picked up his third win of the season and Vic Black recorded his first save for Las Vegas. The 51′s are in first place by a game and a half, and will look to continue their winning ways on Sunday. Rafael Montero will make his third start of the season and will look to rebound from his last start.
New Hampshire 9, Binghamton 4
The Fisher Cats got to Binghamton starter Tyler Pill (0-2, 10.38) early and never looked back getting their first win of this four-game set. Pill was taken out after giving up seven runs on 10 hits in just 4.2 innings. The Mets never really stood a chance on Saturday night as they struggled to figure out New Hampshire’s pitching. With his third home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning, B-Mets first baseman Matt Clark extended his hit streak to five games. It was also the second game in a row that Clark went yard for Binghamton. His average now sits a a balmy .345. Kevin Plawecki and Kyle Johnson drove in the other two runs for the Mets. Hansel Robles (0-0, 0.00) will get his second start of the season in the final game of this series.
St. Lucie 5, Fort Myers 4
Cam Maron’s walk-off RBI single in the 10th inning gave the St. Lucie Mets their 4th win in a row, bringing their record to 5-4 in the Florida State League. Michael Fulmer was solid in his start tonight allowing one run in seven innings of work. After a bad outing his first time on the mound this season, Fulmer was in line for his first win until Mets bullpen let him down. Beck Wheeler recorded his first blown save of the season after allowing three runs on two hits in his one inning of work. Paul Sewald would come in and shut down the Miracle in two innings of relief, despite walking three batters. Brandon Nimmo would score the game-winning run and would record his third multi-hit game in a row. Nimmo has now brought his average to .406 in 9 games. Domingo Tapia (0-1, 1.80) will start on Sunday for St. Lucie.
Savannah 4, Rome 3
The Savannah Sand Gnat are now tied for first place in the South Atlantic League’s Southern Division thanks to an eighth inning home run by catcher Colton Plaia. It was Plaia’s first professional home run and only his fourth hit this season. John Gant (2-0, 2.77) threw seven effective innings picking up his second win of the season while Tim Peterson would record his first save of the season after two superb innings out of the bullpen. Victor Cruzado went 3-for-5 scoring two of the Sand Gnats four runs. Savannah is looking for their fourth win in a row on Sunday with Chris Flexen (0-1, 9.64) on the bump.
Player of the Night
The Mets were just one game away from a organizational sweep for the second night in a row. Decent pitching performances and timely hits were key to the success on Saturday. Brandon Nimmo is the player of the night with his 3-for-5 performance and his game-winning run for the St. Lucie Mets. Daisuke Matsuzaka and Kirk Nieuwenhuis with honorable mentions.
