This was the type of game that J.D. Davis needed to turn his season around. In the process, he led the Mets to one of their biggest wins of the season as well.

In Thursday’s 10-0 drubbing of the Marlins, Davis–batting eighth in the linup–went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs. His first career grand slam blew the lead open, and perhaps more importantly in the long-term, provided the Mets with some hope for their struggling designated hitter.

June was especially tough for Davis, who slugged a mere .349 with three extra base hits (all doubles) in 22 games. In fact, his grand salami on Thursday was his first homer at Citi Field all season, and his first home run overall since June 12 in Anaheim.

With the Mets bottom of the order struggling mightily for a large portion of this year, this game was a major turning point–at least, that’s the hope of what will come of this mini hot streak for the lineup. James McCann also blasted a home run for the first time since April 22, although he’s still batting a paltry .185 on the season. That being said, he’s had clutch hits in back-to-back games, with his RBI single on Wednesday giving the Mets a 5-3 lead in extra innings over the Reds.

With Mark Vientos looming at Triple-A Syracuse, continued struggles by Davis could warrant his benching in favor of the Mets red-hot hitting prospect. Vientos already has 15 home runs in 61 games with the Triple-A club this season.

Buck Showalter nonetheless expressed confidence in Davis, quieting any rumors that the Mets may be looking to add pieces from outside the organization.

“I like our guys,” he said. “I like the players we have and I don’t spend any time coveting somebody else’s. I’m very proud of the guys we have.”

For now – and hopefully moving forward – Davis may have found his swing again. Getting consistent production from the lineup’s 7-9 batters is one of the missing links for this team to truly succeed deep into October. Whether that’s with Davis, Vientos, or a combination of both, the good news is in the present: J.D.’s magnificent game is a welcome sign for the entire team.
