Trevor Williams was sent to the mound Thursday night against the Miami Marlins at Citi Field to kick off a four-game set. Williams responded with his best outing in a Mets uniform, and one of his strongest starts in years.

After a rough outing last week versus the Texas Rangers where Williams surrendered five earned runs off of five hits, including three home runs, in 3 2/3 innings pitched, Williams did a stellar job in keeping Miami in check this time around.

“I’m proud to be a New York Met in any capacity. When I get the ball, it’s the most important thing for me. Whether that’s starting, relieving, or anywhere in between, I’m proud that I’m able to contribute for the guys in this clubhouse and for the fans.”

The righty went seven scoreless innings, walked none, struck out seven, and allowed only two hits; definitely his best outing as a Met, and one that he can hopefully build off of moving forward. After a handful of games against the Marlins of late where Miami was able to pounce on Mets pitching, Williams did an incredible job at containing hitters like Jon Berti and Joey Wendle.

Williams finished his night tossing 83 pitches (55 for strikes) and lowered his season ERA to 3.76. On regular five days of rest as a starter this year, Williams owns a 3.00 ERA.

Williams now has a 3.49 ERA in 85 innings since being traded from the Cubs with Javier Baez to the Mets last July.

With Max Scherzer looking as great as ever as a Met Wednesday night, Jacob deGrom coming back shortly, both Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker holding their own all season, David Peterson stepping up, and with Chris Bassitt looking better of late, the Mets’ rotation could quickly become their strong-suit as the season progresses.
