The New York Mets (27-29) were defeated by the Chicago Cubs (32-23) in 14 innings at Citi Field by a score of 7-1.

It was a pitchers duel in New York tonight with Jacob deGrom on the mound pitching to his elite status and also left-hander Mike Montgomery  pitching solid as well. Both pitchers ended up getting the no-decision.

Pitching

Jacob deGrom  pitched seven solid innings tonight. Only one earned run given up by the right-hander and he tied a career-high striking out 13 batters.

Robert Gsellman pitched a scoreless inning in the eighth. He gave up a leadoff walk, then got out of the inning by striking out the next three batters.

Jeurys Familia pitched the ninth inning in a 1-1 game. He struck out the first two batters. Familia then walked Ben Zobrist , gave up a single to Jason Heyward , and then with two outs with runners at first and third, Familia got Kris Bryant to ground out to shortstop Amed Rosario for the final out of the frame.

Jerry Blevins came in for relief in the 10th inning and ended up pitching himself out of a bases-loaded jam he got himself into.

Hansel Robles pitched in the 11th and had a scoreless inning.

Tim Peterson threw two scoreless innings in extras.

Buddy Baumann gave up four earned runs in the 14th inning to give the Cubs the lead in the late goings.

Gerson Bautista came in for the relief of Baumann who couldn’t find the strike zone and gave up another two earned runs to make it a 7-1 Cubs lead.

Offense

The Mets offense did not click at all tonight against Cubs pitching. Mets hitters could only salvage six hits through 14 innings. The only run the Mets scored was a tying home run by Michael Conforto to tie the game at one in the seventh inning.

They had many opportunities to win in extras but squandered it. Just heartbreaking.
