The Mets improved their all-time Opening Day record to a major league best 38-20 by beating Washington on Thursday afternoon at Nationals Park, 2-0. (Box Score)

Pitching

Jacob deGrom, aka deCy Young, got the opening day start for the Mets. In the first, he gave up a single to Trea Turner and walked Juan Soto but worked around that to limit the damage.

In the second, he struck out the side in order. The third is where the deGrom showed why the Mets are paying him the big bucks. He gave up a double to Victor Robles and a single to Adam Eaton to lead-off the third. He proceeded to strike out Turner and get a double play thanks to a nifty play by Robinson Cano.

The fourth was much easier and it included a strikeout of Soto and Ryan Zimmerman. He then struck out the side in the fifth again.

The sixth featured another Houdini performance. He gave up a single and subsequent steal to Turner which put him in scoring position with no-outs for Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto. Jake got Rendon to ground out and struck out Soto. He got Zimmerman to fly out to cap it off. His final line was: 6 IP, 5 H, BB, 10 K.

DeGrom set a major league record with his 30th straight start allowing three runs or fewer. His streak of 25 straight quality starts is tied for the second longest in MLB history.

Seth Lugo took the ball from deGrom and struck out the side in the seventh.

Jeurys Familia pitched a scoreless eighth inning while working around a HBP to Eaton.

Edwin Diaz picked up the save in his first official appearance for the Mets. He pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Offense

Robinson Cano eats the Nationals for Breakfast. He homered off Max Scherzer in his first ever Mets plate appearance.

Other than that the Mets did next to nothing against Scherzer until the eighth inning.

Dave Martinez questionably let Scherzer hit in the bottom of the seventh and Scherzer gave up a walk to Dominic Smith in the top of the eighth. He then pulled Scherzer with two outs for Justin Miller who gave up a single to Pete Alonso (his first MLB hit). Matt Grace then came in to give up a RBI single to Cano.

Cano was the offensive star with two hits and two RBIs. He also had a nice defensive play in third inning to turn an unconventional 5-4-2-5 double play and get deGrom out of a jam.
