Fresh off signing his lucrative new contract extension with the New York Mets, Jacob deGrom dazzled in his season opening start as the team defeated the Washington Nationals by a score of 2-0.

DeGrom, 30, pitched six scoreless innings while striking out ten and walking one, picking up his first win of the 2019 season. Jacob tossed 93 pitches on the day, 53 of which were for strikes. Although deGrom looked cool and collected on the mound, there were still some nerves involved.

“I was nervous today honestly, really nervous. Once I get out there I’m OK. It’s opening day, you want to go out there and establish the strike zone and start the season with a win. There was some pressure.” Matt Ehalt of Yahoo Sports.

One of the most important pitches during his outing, took place in the bottom of the sixth inning against Nats’ outfielder Juan Soto with one out and the tying run on third. DeGrom threw a nasty 3-2 changeup.

Thursday’s win for deGrom was his 25th consecutive quality start, which ties him for the second longest streaking MLB history. Bob Gibson holds the record with 26. It was also his 30th straight start allowing three runs or less, a new major league record.

Manager, Mickey Callaway thought deGrom may not even have been at his best today regardless of the dazzling results stating, “probably wasn’t even on top of his game.” Tim Healey of Newsday.

DeGrom signed a five-year, $137.5 million dollar extension with the Metropolitans this past week. Thursday’s season opening win could just be a sign of what’s to come from the reigning CY Young award winner as he becomes the new face of the franchise.
