The American League All-Stars defeated the National League All-Stars 8-6 in the 89th Major League Baseball All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Nationals Park.
Pitching
National League
Max Scherzer was dialed in in the first, striking out both Mookie Betts and Jose Altuve, and stranding runners on the corners. He allowed a solo shot leading off the second, but was able to settle down and end his night by striking out Salvador Perez.
Jacob deGrom allowed a two out, line drive solo home run, but struck out J.D. Martinez to close out his lone inning of work. Mike Foltynewicz pitched next for the NL, and threw a scoreless top of the fourth.
Aaron Nola struck out Perez and Betts in an impressive bottom of the fourth. Jeremy Jeffress issued a leadoff walk, but stranded the runner at second in a scoreless top of the sixth.
Felipe Vazquez allowed a two out hit and issued a walk, but battled to keep the score 2-1 in the seventh. Josh Hader served up three hits, the last of which was a go-ahead three run moonshot.
Brad Hand relieved Hader, and struck out Yan Gomes en route to escaping the top of the eighth. Hand recorded the first out of the ninth, before handing the ball over to Ross Stripling who retire the next two batters in order.
Stripling gave up four straight hits, including back-to-back solo home runs, and the AL tacked on three more runs to take an 8-5 lead.
American League
Chris Sale worked around a Javier Baez lead off single, and struck out Paul Goldschmidt in his only inning of work. Luis Severino worked around a lead off double in a scoreless second inning.
Blake Snell allowed a solo home run on the first pitch he threw, but struck out Nolan Arenado in the third. Snell also struck out Matt Kemp and Bryce Harper before issuing a two out walk, and ending his night.
Joe Jimenez painted the outside corner to strike out Brandon Crawford, the only batter he faced in relief of Snell, to end the fourth. Jose Berrios put up a zero in the fifth, followed by a scoreless inning from Blake Treinen.
Charlie Morton gave up a game tying solo home run in the seventh. After being handed a 5-2 lead, Morton allowed another solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.
Mariners closer Edwin Diaz issued a one out walk, then served up a game-tying two run bomb in the bottom of the ninth.
J.A. Happ was greeted rudely as the first pitch he threw was smacked into the right field seats. He was able to retire the next three batters and secure the 8-6 American League win.
Hitting
National League
In his return to the All Star game, Matt Kemp led off the bottom of the second with a double to left, but Severino battled back and he was stranded there.
Willson Contreras poked the first pitch he saw from Snell over the left field fence to cut the AL lead to 2-1 to the third.
Trevor Story smacked a line drive home run with one out in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game a 2-2.
Later in the the inning, J.T. Realmuto drew a walk and Eugenio Suarez was hit by a pitch. After both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch, Jesus Aguilar popped out to strand them there.
After falling behind in the top of the eighth, Christian Yelich hit an opposite field home run, to cut the AL lead to 5-3.
Scooter Gennett came off the bench in the ninth and crushed a fastball for a game-tying two run home run.
Joey Votto cranked a first pitch fastball to deep right leading off the bottom of the tenth, cutting the AL lead to 8-6.
American League
The AL threatened with two outs in the first after Mike Trout walked and J.D. Martinez singled, but Jose Ramirez popped out to strand runners on the corners.
Aaron Judge launched a leadoff solo home run into the left field bullpen for the first run of the game in the top of the second off Scherzer.
Trout lined a solo home run of his own into the bullpen, with two outs in the third against deGrom to give the AL a 2-0 lead.
Jose Altuve picked up his first career All-Star game hit with a two out single in the fifth.
The AL put two on in the seventh, as Michael Brantley dumped in a two out single and Jed Lowrie drew a walk, however Mitch Haniger struck out looking to end the inning.
After both Shin-Soo Choo and George Springer singled, Jean Segura cranked a go-ahead three run home run off Hader to make it 5-2 in favor of the American League in the top of the eighth.
Astros sluggers Alex Bregman and George Springer hit back-to-back solo home runs leading off the top of the tenth to retake a 7-5 lead.
Segura and Mitch Moreland followed that up with back-to-back singles, Segura then came into score and make it 8-5 on a Brantley sacrifice fly.
On Deck
The Mets return to action on Friday as they travel to the Bronx to take on the Yankees in Part 2 of the Subway Series. Noah Syndergaard will face off with rookie Domingo German at 7:10 p.m.
