The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired Tarik Skubal from the Tigers for outfield prospect Zyhir Hope, right-handed pitching prospect River Ryan, and right-handed pitching prospect Brady Smith.

On the most recent prospect rankings, Zyhir Hope was ranked 20th overall by Baseball Prospectus, 25th overall per Pipeline, 55th overall per Baseball America. River Ryan was ranked 68th on Pipeline and was not ranked by Baseball Prospectus or Baseball America. Pipeline has Brady Smith as the Dodgers’ 17th best prospect while Baseball America has him as the 27th best.
Skubal has a 2.79 ERA and 0.91 WHIP on the season. At the start of May, Skubal underwent an experimental surgery due to bone chips in his elbow and returned on June 13. Since returning, he has pitched to a 2.87 ERA and 0.88 WHIP.
As it stands, the Dodgers’ playoff rotation lines up to be Tarik Skubal, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Emmet Sheehan, and Roki Sasaki. If healthy, Shohei Ohtani, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow would take those later spots over Sheehan and Sasaki. Ohtani does not have a timeline to pitch again, Glasnow should begin a rehab assignment on August 4, and Blake Snell should have one more rehab start before making the majors. Health has been an issue for the Dodgers’ pitching each year, so Skubal gives them one more top-of-the-rotation arm should someone not be available in October.
