The Mets dropped Sunday’s game to the Miami Marlins, 5-1. Sandy Alcantara dominated the lineup, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run. Kodai Senga struggled again, lasting only 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Brandon Waddell, who impressed with 4 1/3 scoreless frames in relief.

Offensively, the Mets managed only five hits. Jeff McNeil collected two of them, including a double, while Brandon Nimmo added another extra-base hit.

Today, the Mets open a three-game set against the Tigers. Detroit is fresh off a series win over the Royals, though they were swept by the Athletics beforehand. Sean Manaea (1-2, 5.01 ERA) gets the ball for New York against veteran Charlie Morton (9-10, 5.25 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET and will air SNY.

NL Standings Update

The Braves rallied in the ninth, as Drake Baldwin’s two-run homer lifted them to a 3-1 win over the Phillies. With both the Mets’ and Phillies’ losses, Philadelphia remains six games ahead of New York.

Cincinnati beat the Cardinals 7-4 behind home runs from infielder Matt McLain and former Phillie Austin Hays. The Reds are now just four games back of the Mets, while St. Louis falls to five and a half games out.

Meanwhile, both the Giants and Diamondbacks picked up wins, keeping themselves barely in the Wild Card hunt. San Francisco sits five games back, with Arizona trailing by five and a half .

The Mets will promote infielder Luisangel Acuña for the stretch run, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. The speedy Acuña has appeared late in 38 games this season as a pinch runner or defensive replacement, swiping 12 bases along the way.

The Cubs have reached an agreement with veteran Carlos Santana, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The 39-year-old first baseman brings superb defense and a prolific eye at the plate to help Chicago’s stretch run.

According to Jesse Rogers of ESPN, the Cubs are optioning Owen Caissie to make room for outfielder Kevin Alcántara. The club’s signing of Santana is expected to become official today, and he will remain eligible for postseason play. In addition, newly acquired pitcher Aaron Civale will be used out of the bullpen.

Walker Buehler has signed a minor league deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, the team announced. He’s been assigned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. However, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the plan is for Buehler to return to the big leagues on Sept. 12 against the Royals as the Phillies try a shift to a six-man rotation down the stretch.

Consensus top-100 prospect Sal Stewart will be called up by the Reds as rosters expand today, Jon Morosi of MLB Network tweeted on Sunday. The 21-year-old split time between second and third in the minors, posting a .315/.394/.629 line in Triple-A.

Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Toronto Blue Jays have claimed utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa off waivers from the Pirates. Kiner-Falefa spent part of 2024 in Toronto, hitting .292/.338/.420 with 3.6 WAR in 83 games before being traded to Pittsburgh. Since then, he has struggled, posting a .617 OPS and just 1.9 WAR over 169 games with the Pirates.
