Prospect list season is in full swing right now with Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, and MLB Pipeline releasing their updates going into the 2020 season. The trio did not come to a consensus on Mets prospects with only two landing on Baseball America’s list and four on MLB Pipeline’s.
We’ve started our own countdown here at MMO on the Mets Top 30 Prospects and will continue with that through Spring Training. We will also have a number of writers down in Port St. Lucie this year in hopes of bringing you video and thoughts on Mets lower level prospects.
Top 100 Lists Placement
Shortstop Ronny Mauricio and catcher Francisco Alvarez are the only two Mets prospects to be in all three top lists. Shortstop Andres Gimenez and third baseman Brett Baty were also featured on at least one list.
Mauricio – #48 Baseball Prospectus, #62 MLB Pipeline, #66 Baseball America
Alvarez – #63 MLB Pipeline, #67 Baseball America, #88 Baseball Prospectus
Gimenez – #84 MLB Pipeline, #90 Baseball Prospectus
Baty – #93 MLB Pipeline
Just Missed
Mets third round pick (first round talent) RHP Matthew Allan just missed MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list, Jim Callis said he would have the 18-year-old at No. 109 on his list.
Baseball America has Allan, Gimenez, and Baty on their list of prospects that were considered for the top 100.
Top International Arm
Looks like the Mets potentially got a steal when they signed right-handed pitcher Robert Dominguez for $95,000 during the 2019-2020 International Free Agent signing period.
Dominguez, turned 18 in November, reportedly hit 99 mph with his fastball before his 18th birthday according to Baseball America.
Baseball America recently went over the top prospects from the recent (and technically current) IFA signing period, and they have Dominguez ranked No. 11. They also have him as the top pitcher. Quite a feat given his bonus, the players listed above him and around him, had bonuses in the $1.3 million to $5.1 million range.
Fangraphs has Dominguez as their No. 17 Mets prospect and at MMO we had the hard thrower at No. 30.
Local Legend Takes Over Brooklyn
Long-time St. Johns head coach Ed Blankmeyer was introduced on Thursday night as the Brooklyn Cyclones new manager. He takes over a team that won the New York- Penn League Championship in 2019, yet the Mets front office decided to move on from Edgardo Alfonzo.
The 65-year-old went 829-499-4 as the head coach for the Red Storm from 1996 through 2019.
Two Top Shortstops
Now that Baseball America’s top 100 is out, they are breaking the best prospects by position and the Mets had two of the top 30 shortstops in the game.
Mauricio came in at No. 11 on the list and Gimenez at No. 22. Gimenez dropped 16 spots on this list from 2018 and Shervyen Newton fell off after a rough 2019 season.
