Noah Syndergaard and the New York Mets squared off against Zach Eflin and the Philadelphia Phillies in the second game of their three-game weekend series.

Tomas Nido lined a three-run double down the third-base line in the bottom of the second, Todd Frazier hit a three-run homer in the third, and Jeff McNeil had three hits.

Thor racked up his eleventh win of the season on a night that he clearly didn’t have his best stuff in the Mets 10-5 win.

Pitching

Syndergaard worked around a two-out walk to Wilson Ramos, getting Rhys Hoskins to fly out to leave him stranded in the first.

After retiring Asdrubal Cabrera on a fly out to center and striking out Nick Williams on a 98 MPH sinker on the lower inside part of the plate, Cesar Hernandez lined a single to center and then stole second. Syndergaard walked Odubel Herrera intentionally, then struck out Eflin to end the threat.

Noah had some control issues in the third inning. He allowed a leadoff single to Carlos Santana but erased him on a Justin Bour double-play ball.

After Ramos doubled to left field, Syndergaard walked Hoskins and Cabrera before inducing a fly out from Williams to escape the jam.

Hernandez notched his second hit of the game to start things off in the fourth, but Jay Bruce made a nice stab at a Herrera liner and doubled up Hernandez unassisted. Syndergaard then got J.P. Crawford to fly out to end the frame.

Jeff McNeil made another solid play at second, ranging toward the bag and throwing across his body to get Santana leading off the fifth.

Todd Frazier made a nice play and throw from the shortstop position (shift) in the following at-bat to get Bour, and Amed Rosario made a clean play on Ramos to give Syndergaard his first 1-2-3 inning of the night.

Syndergaard finally cracked in the top of the sixth, allowing a leadoff homer to Hoskins to break the shutout. Cabrera followed that up with a double and Hernandez added his third single of the night to score Cabby and cut the Mets lead to 7-2.

Syndergaard issued his fifth walk of the night to Herrera but induced a 6-4-3 double play from pinch-hitter Maikel Franco to limit the damage.

After allowing a leadoff single to Santana in the seventh, Syndergaard gave up a single to Bour on the eighth pitch of the at-bat and Ramos singled home Santana to cut the Mets lead to 9-3.

Syndergaard struck out Hoskins, then gave up his fourth hit of the inning, a single to Cabrera to load the bases for Williams.

He popped out to Rosario and Hernandez drilled a comebacker that struck Syndergaard in his lower abdomen, bringing home the Phils fourth run of the night and sending Thor to the dugout.

Syndergaard’s final line was 6.2 innings, allowing four runs on 12 hits and five walks with four strikeouts. His ERA jumped up a tick to 3.44 on the season.

Jerry Blevins replaced Syndergaard and struck out former Met Jose Bautista with the bases loaded to get out of the potentially game-changing jam.

Blevins retired Aaron Altherr and Santana before walking pinch-hitter, Andrew Knapp and handing the ball off to Robert Gsellman, who set down Ramos to end the inning.

Gsellman stayed on for the ninth and allowed an infield single to Hoskins to lead things off. Cesar Hernandez capped off his 4-for-4 night with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 10-5, and Gsellman retired Scott Kingery to end the game.

Offense

The Mets went down in order in the first but came up big against Eflin in the bottom of the second.

Jay Bruce led off the frame with the Mets first hit of the game, a single to right field. Todd Frazier was hit in the hip with an Eflin pitch and Brandon Nimmo walked to load the bases.

After a Dominic Smith strikeout, Tomas Nido hit a three-run double down the left-field line, clearing the bases and giving the Mets an early 3-0 lead.

Jeff McNeil led off the third with his fourth triple of the year, a ball that was smoked down the right-field line.

Michael Conforto grounded out, the Phils intentionally walked Bruce, then Frazier took an 87 MPH hanging slider over the left-field wall for his 17th home run of the year, staking the Mets to a 6-0 lead.

Making his first appearance of the season, Jerad Eickhoff replaced Eflin in the bottom of the fourth.

Amed Rosario lined a one-out double to center field and McNeil singled to right, his second hit of the night, moving Rosey to third.

After Conforto struck out, Bruce blooped a single into shallow left-field scoring Rosario to give the Mets a 7-0 lead. McNeil moved to third on the throw, but Frazier lined out to deep centerfield to leave him stranded.

Nimmo walked to lead off the bottom half of the fifth but was erased on Smith’s groundout in the next at-bat. Smith ended up leaving the game after that plate appearance, coming out with what Wayne Randazzo of 710 WOR reported as a “tight left groin”.

McNeil poked his second single and third hit of the game with one out in the sixth and moved to third on Conforto’s first hit of the series, a fast-dropping single to right.

Bruce walked to load the bases, then Frazier flew out to shallow right-field, but apparently deep enough for McNeil to score from third to give the Mets an 8-2 lead and Frazier his fourth RBI of the night.

Nimmo then took an Adam Morgan breaking ball into centerfield, scoring Conforto from third and extending the Mets lead to 9-2.

The Mets went down in order in the seventh and Michael Conforto hit his 22nd home run of the season in the eighth to make it a 10-4 game.
