So Much To Be Thankful For On This Thanksgiving

Everybody keeps writing about rumors circulating about the Mets, but I decided on this day, to write a piece about gratitude on this All-American holiday. We will all gather around today with family for a day of eating and football, but so much of the world can’t enjoy the day because they are just too alone, too depressed, too battered, too poor and too hungry.

We must reach out to these people and show them we care and all it takes is a small step. If you have elderly in your neighborhood who are alone, spend a few minutes with them–sharing the Sunday newspaper (especially the sports section) talking about the news. Play a game of cards with them or just invite them in to watch a game. Dementia is such a debilitating disease, and often times stimulating their minds can’t take place because they are alone. My Dad suffers from that disease and seeing people livens his spirits so I can tell you that it works.

Domestic abuse is the single biggest social problem we have in this country and quite simply you are either part of the solution or part of the problem. The Joyful Heart Foundation, founded by Mariska Hargitay of Law & Order SVU, is an organization that helps sexual assault victims heal and reclaim a sense of joy in their lives. The mission is simple–transform society’s response to sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse, support survivors’ healing and end this violence forever.

We need to stop the casual response to sexual abuse by saying things like “Boys Will be Boys” or “Why did she wait so long to report it?” because those reactions just preclude victims from ever getting justice or closure to their horrific suffering at the hands of predators. I am so thankful that Mariska started this foundation and uses her platform with the best drama ever produced for television to make sure we bring these issues to the forefront.

So as we get together with families and friends this weekend, think about those who need our support. I am so grateful that my life and career are so enjoyable and uplifting to me, and trust me when I tell you this–volunteering your time to those in need is such an uplifting experience.

Happy, Safe and Healthy Thanksgiving To All My Loyal Followers.

God Bless You All.
