Mets Interested In Gio Gonzalez If Syndergaard Gets Traded

In the event of a trade involving Noah Syndergaard, the Mets will have a hole in their starting rotation. While there has been buzz surrounding names like J.A. Happ and Patrick Corbin, there is a new lefty starter on their radar.

Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets are interested in bringing Gio Gonzalez to Queens if a spot in the rotation opens up due to a trade.

The 33-year-old has been with the Washington Nationals since 2012 when he finished third in Cy Young voting (behind R.A. Dickey and Clayton Kershaw).

Over his career, he has gone 127-97 with a 3.69 ERA, 3.63 FIP, 1.316 WHIP and 8.7 K/9.

In 26 career starts against the Mets, he is 15-6 with a 2.83 ERA across 156 innings including a complete game shutout. Further, he sports a 1.75 ERA at Citi Field.

In 2018, Gonzalez split time with the Nationals and Brewers, going 10-11 with a 4.21 ERA, 4.16 FIP, 1.444 WHIP, and 7.8 K/9. He finished the year strong, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA across five starts with the Brewers.

He has pitched less than 170 innings just once since 2010 (158.2 in 2014). Stay tuned for more news about who the Mets might target, but they will likely not sign a big-name free agent starter if Noah Syndergaard stays put.
