Rosenthal: Mets Receiving Serious Interest in Wheeler

While it is likely that the Mets won’t trade Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard unless they get a king’s ransom, another pitcher has garnered serious trade interest recently.

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, New York has gotten “serious interest” in right-hander Zack Wheeler.

Wheeler, 28, has had a resurgence this year after missing two seasons with Tommy John surgery and being sidelined for half of last year with injury.

In 17 starts, Wheeler is 2-6 with a 4.42 ERA, 3.70 FIP, 87 ERA+, 1.344 WHIP and 8.9 K/9 across 99.2 innings pitched.

The Smyrna, Georgia native is a free agent after next season which could be appealing to a team, who could use him in a pennant race this year and still have one more year of control.

If the Mets truly won’t trade deGrom and Syndergaard, there will likely be lots of dialogue the next couple weeks surrounding Wheeler and left-hander Steven Matz, who has also blossomed and is having a terrific year.
