Coming into the New York Mets game on Thursday afternoon against the Washington Nationals, Jay Bruce was 4-for-20 with only on extra base hit.
Bruce changed that in a big way in the Mets 8-2 win with a double that just missed being a homer and a grand slam late in the game to give the Mets insurance runs.
Bruce talked about the importance of the first series against the two-time defending NL East champs, “I think [this series] is important. I don’t think it’s necessarily imperative. But any time you can come in and beat a team of this caliber is huge. We understand it’s going to be like this all year. There’s going to be big series.”
The outfield as a whole, showed off their power on Thursday with Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto going deep as well. Brandon Nimmo doubled as a pinch hitter as he continues his great start to the season.
Adrian Gonzalez went 1-for-4 on the day with two strikeouts though he still has an early season .782 OPS and has been hitting the ball hard. Begging the question, how the heck do you get these guys the at-bats they should get?
