Morning Briefing: Let The Games Begin

Good morning Mets fans!

After a long offseason, baseball is finally back! While wins and losses may be meaningless for the time being, you can finally watch your favorite team play games once again.

The Mets will kick off spring training today by taking on the Atlanta Braves at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie at 1:10 p.m. You can watch the game on SNY.

Dominic Smith did not practice with the regulars at first base during drills according to Matt Ehalt of North Jersey. Wilmer Flores and Adrian Gonzalez split the time there instead.

Jacob deGrom‘s wife Stacey gave birth to their second child, Aniston Grace deGrom.

Yoenis Cespedes has not played golf since July according to Mike Puma of The New York Post. He does miss it, but doesn’t plan on playing it again anytime soon. Critics connected his injuries in the past to his time spent playing golf.

The Mets have set their pitching schedules for the first three spring training games according to Tim Britton of The Athletic.

Hansel Robles, Chris Flexen, Paul SewaldTyler BashlorJamie CallahanCorey OswaltDrew Smith, and Jacob Rhame will all be available for today’s game against the Braves, with Zack Wheeler getting the start.

Seth Lugo will get the nod for Saturday’s contest against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kevin McGowan, Gerson Bautista, P.J. ConlonMarcos Molina, and Corey Taylor will make their spring training debuts on Saturday as well.

Robert Gsellman starts on Sunday with Jeurys Familia, Jerry Blevins, Anthony Swarzak, AJ Ramos, and Rafael Montero all behind him while the Mets face the Miami Marlins.

The Boston Red Sox will not have a press conference for J.D. Martinez according to Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe. His tests and MRIs are still being reviewed by team doctors.

Jen Pawol was the home-plate umpire for the Detroit Tigers’ game against Florida Southern on Thursday. The 41-year-old is one of two female umpires in professional baseball; the other being Emma Charlesworth-Seiler.

Pawol will continuing umpiring games throughout spring training before returning to the minor leagues during the regular season.
