Mets 3, Nationals 1
Jenrry Mejia, who is battling for that fifth spot in the rotation, tossed a gem today and was sharp, dominating and in mid-season form. However, these are the Mets and the best man doesn’t always win.
The young righthander hurled 5.0 innings allowing just two hits and a run while striking out six batters. Mejia was bothered by a carbuncle bunion on his right foot during the game, but said it was no big deal. An outstanding effort.
Marc Carig was told again today by a team official that Mejia is very much alive in this competition for the fifth spot, but that there’s still some healthy debate within the organization about going with Dice-K. <Insert laughter>
John Lannan relieved Mejia in the sixth and pitched a perfect inning, while Jeurys Familia kept his scoreless spring going with another solid inning of work. Parnell closed it out. We’re finally going to have a very solid bullpen this season… ‘Bout time….
Daniel Murphy started at second base and got some cheers after fielding a tough hop and then firing the ball between his legs to nail the runner at first. I’ve never seen that before and it was totally cool! Welcome back, Murph…
Andrew Brown ripped a two out RBI single to left for the Mets first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Brown has earned a spot on the bench and should be heading north with the team next week. In the seventh, Curtis Granderson showed some muscle and blasted a towering two-run homer to put the Mets up 3-1. he also walked ans scored a run.
That’s about it as the Mets only had three hits in this game.
Braves 4, Mets 1
Ike Davis went 0-for-2 and was removed after two innings and replaced by Allan Dykstra. The Mets later said it had nothing to do with a trade or injury. “He was just feeling beat up and fatigued,” said Sandy Alderson. Ummm ok…
Carlos Torres got the start allowed two earned runs on six hits in his four innings of work..
Glad they broadcasted the other game. 🙂
Thank goodness, no more split squad games. The Mets will take on the St. Louis Cardinals Monday afternoon at 1:10 PM at Tradition Field. Daisuke Matsuzaka will get the start and the game will air on SNY.
