Brewers GM Doug Melvin acknowledged in an interview this weekend that the Mets and Brewers could fit well together as trading partners. “They’ve indicated that they have extra first basemen, and we have a need,” Melvin said. “Again, it’s all about keeping your options open. … Nothing imminent, and I don’t anticipate anything imminent. But first base is one of our needs, they have excess first basemen, so you can tie two and two together […]
Winter 2004. It was a great time to be a Mets fan. As cameras clicked away and members of the press took their seats, all eyes were focused on the recently acquired outfielder. With Jeff Wilpon on one side and wife Jessica on the other, Carlos Beltran donned a Mets cap for the very first time. Suddenly, General Manager Omar Minaya appeared. He rode on to the stage on a tricycle. Dressed as a clown […]
Joe D. wrote earlier that the Marlon Byrd signing was a “power play” by the Philadelphia Phillies, and he couldn’t be more correct. It was a power play because they knew the Mets were interested in Byrd, and this signing could have also priced out a lot of the players for the Mets. It potentially screwed the Mets from two angles. If Byrd gets $8 mil per year, what the heck are the other guys […]
The Phillies have reached an agreement on a two-year, $16 million deal with free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. However, late last night it was learned that the deal includes a vesting option for a third year. ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported that the $8 million club option for 2016 vests if he gets 600 plate appearances in 2015, or if he totals 1,100 plate appearances over 2014-15 and has at least […]
This afternoon in Orlando, Sandy Alderson suggested getting two starting outfielders this winter might now be an uphill battle because of all the teams searching for those types of bats. “We might bring in more than two starting outfielders. Who knows how things are going to break?” Alderson said. “I’d be surprised if that happens only because there’s so much interest in corner outfielders among many clubs.” Asked to clarify whether he meant he would […]
There are two general managers in today’s game that pioneered the incorporation of the moneyball concept into the Major Leagues. One of them was a former marine who was the first to adopt into the then little known Bill Jame’s philosophy of advanced statistics, while the other was a one-time elite outfield prospect whose hobbies include breaking bats, throwing chairs and analyzing sabermetrics in his spare time. Neither of them cares about what you think. […]
The Mets announced that they have signed signed IF/OF Anthony Seratelli and RHP Joel Carreno to minor league deals. Seratelli, 30, has played all four infield positions and some outfield while batting .276/.337/ .418 in his eight year minor league career. The New Jersey native batted .273 last season with 11 home runs and 41 RBI in 487 plate appearances for Triple-A Omaha in the Royals organization. Carreno, 26, was signed out of the Dominican Republic by the […]
Bill Madden of the Daily News explains why if the Mets are serious about spending, as Jeff Wilpon and Sandy Alderson keep suggesting, they very likely will have to overpay. Here’s the problem for the Mets — and to a lesser degree the Yankees now that they can no longer guarantee free agents a legitimate chance for a World Series ring: All things being relatively equal, the Mets, a team that has had five straight […]
The Phillies are targeting big-time free-agent outfielders and baseball people expect them to be in the mix for Jacoby Ellsbury, Shin-Soo Choo, Nelson Cruz and possibly Curtis Granderson according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. The Phillies have a team built around superior starting pitching and veteran infielders, Heyman writes. But have a clear weakness in the outfield, where they got sub-par production this past year. One person familiar with their situation said they were even prepared to try to bring back Hunter […]
