Mets Minors Recap: Alonso Homers, Knocks in Five

Salt Lake Bees (41-33) 7, Las Vegas 51 (28-46) 1 Box Score

The 51s went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left nine runners on base.

New Hampshire Fisher Cats (30-41) 5, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (37-30) 1  Box Score

The Rumble Ponies were shutout for the first eight innings before Thompson hit a solo home run in the ninth inning. Thompson is continuing to have an excellent June, hitting his fourth home run in six games. He has a 1.032 OPS in June. Nido has been in a slump for the past couple weeks and is only 4 for his last 28.

  • RHP Marcos Molina (L, 0-2, 4.15 ERA) 7.0 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
  • RHP Luis Mateo (1-0, 3.92 ERA) 1.0 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 2 BB

Molina pitched better in his second start for Binghamton, but still took the loss because of a lack of run support from the offense. Mateo came into the game in the eighth inning and struggled immediately, allowing the first two batters he faced to reach base before giving up a three run home run which put the game out of reach.

St. Lucie Mets (34-36) 19, Charlotte Stone Crabs (32-38) 7  Box Score

  • Jhoan Urena 3B: 1 for 3, 3 R, HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, .310/.405/.468
  • Peter Alonso 1B: 4 for 5, 3 R, 3 2B, HR. 5 RBI, BB, .232/.296/.455
  • Patrick Mazeika DH: 2 for 5, 2 R, RBI, BB, .303/.394/.459

The St. Lucie offense exploded for 19 runs on 20 hits. Every batter who was in the starting lineup had at least one hit, with seven players having multi-hit games. Alonso had the best game of his career with four extra base hits, three doubles and a grand slam home run in the fourth inning. Vinny Siena hit the first home run of his professional career, a fifth inning pinch hit grand slam.

Humphreys made his first start for St. Lucie after a dominant eleven starts with Columbia and was roughed up. He gave up eleven hits, almost double his previous season high of six hits allowed, and gave up six runs (five earned) in only four innings. Palsha pitched two excellent innings in relief. Olivo pitched well in his first appearance of the season and was awarded the save, despite entering the game with an 18-6 lead.

Kannapolis Intimidators (41-29) 5, Columbia Fireflies (40-30) 4  Box Score

The Fireflies scored four runs, despite only having seven hits in the game. They were helped out by a couple of errors and three of their four runs were unearned.

Gonzalez’s night got off to a rough start, with him allowing three runs on five hits in the first inning. He would settle in a bit after that, only giving up two more runs on a fifth inning home run. This ends a streak of six straight starts where Gonzalez had given up 2 or less earned runs in each start.

Vermont Lake Monsters (2-3) 5, Brooklyn Cyclones (2-2) 4  Box Score

The Cyclones offense got off to a slow start in this game, as they were held without a hit for the first five innings. They were able to put up two runs in the sixth inning and rallied late by scoring another two runs in the ninth, but they fell just short of a comeback.

  • RHP Darwin Ramos (L, 0-1, 10.38 ERA) 4.1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
  • LHP Kurtis Horne (0-0, 0.00 ERA) 0.2 IP, H
  • RHP Nicholas Debora (0-0, 0.00 ERA) 3.0 IP, 4 K

Ramos had pitched in the St. Lucie and Columbia bullpens earlier in the season, but was making his first start in this game. He had a rough outing and was unable to make through the fifth inning. Debora pitched three perfect innings in relief.

Kingsport Mets (2-0) 16, Burlington Royals (0-2) 1  Box Score

The Kingsport offense had a huge game scoring 16 runs on 22 hits, including three home runs. Every player in the lineup had at least one hit and five players had three or more hits in the game. Uriarte had the first multi-home run game of his career, homering twice after hitting only one home run in all of 2016.

Hernandez and Sanchez both pitched very well, limiting Burlington to only one unearned run on four hits.
