Sad news to report as the team confirms that Bartolo Colon’s mother has died of breast cancer this afternoon in the Dominican Republic.
Adriana Morales, 63, was admitted to the hospital this past weekend, and Bartolo was scratched from his start today so that he could fly to the DR to be with his family.
The Mets will call up Gonzalez Germen from Triple-A Las Vegas to replace Colon. The righthanded reliever has a 0.52 ERA over 17.1 innings pitched in Las Vegas, striking out 17 and walking six.
Our prayers are with Bartolo and his family.
The team announced that Colon’s mother is critically ill and he will be flying home to be with her and his family.
Terry Collins said he hopes to get four to five innings innings out of Torres this afternoon.
The Mets will likely place Colon on the bereavement list so that they can temporarily promote another pitcher from Triple-A while Colon is out.
