MMO Game Thread: Diamondbacks vs Mets, 4:00 PM (WPIX)

zack wheeler

The Mets and Diamondbacks will meet again after Friday’s washout and play the first of three games on Saturday afternoon at Citi Field in a 4:00 PM contest. Zack Wheeler (1-4, 4.53) starts for the Mets and opposes RHP Josh Collmenter (2-2, 4.02) for Arizona.

Wheeler took the loss in the Mets’ 6-3 defeat against the Nationals on May 18 in his last start, allowing five runs, three earned, five hits and two walks in 6.0 innings while striking out five. He has allowed at least five runs for the third time in his last four starts.

Vic Black will join the Mets tomorrow as the 26th player for Sunday’s doubleheader and will wear #38. Black was 0-1 with seven saves and a 1.45 ERA in 17 games for Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League.

Starting Lineup

  1. Juan Lagares – CF
  2. Daniel Murphy – 2B
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Curtis Granderson – RF
  5. Chris Young – LF
  6. Lucas Duda – 1B
  7. Wilmer Flores – SS
  8. Anthony Recker – C
  9. Zack Wheeler – RHP

Well the Mets get a mulligan after last night. The rain came and washed out the Diamondbacks 2-0 lead, and now the Mets get to play the entire game all over on Sunday in a doubleheader. Effectively, this makes today’s game the opener as Wheeler takes on Collmenter.

Wheeler is 1-4 over 9 starts with a 4.53 ERA and 49.2 innings of work. After a bad start against the Yankees where he allowed 5 earned runs over 4.1 innings, he had an average start against the Nationals where he allowed 3 earned runs, 5 total, over 6.0 innings. His third start of the year was against the Diamondbacks where he allowed 2 earned runs and 6 hits over 6.0 innings. The Diamondbacks have the following numbers against Wheeler:

  • Goldschmidt 2-5
  • Hill 2-6, HR
  • Prado 1-6
  • Parra 1-4
  • Montero 2-2, 2B
  • Owings 2-3, 2B

Collmenter is 2-2 over 11 games and 7 starts this season logging 47.0 innings and a 4.02 ERA. His first start of the year was against the Mets (after some time in the pen) where he allowed 3 ER and 5 hits over 4.0 innings. In his last two starts he allowed 7 ER over 10.1 innings. The Mets have the following numbers against Collmenter:

  • Wright 2-11, 2 HR
  • Murphy 4-9, 2 2B
  • Tejada 2-7
  • E Young 2-5, 2B
  • Lagares 2-4, 2B
  • Recker 1-4

Lets Go Mets!

  • Metropolitan

The way i is looking the same weather pattern we had yesterday around game time gonna start for this game time..

  • Nmartz

The only team Wheeler has beaten!

  • Tommy

still say Eric Campell should be in there again today! But whatever!

  • donobrien

Again, CY is in the lineup, not for what he has done, but for what the FO hopes he will do. They can’t trade him in July if his numbers are the same as last year.

  • donobrien

We know why CY is playing, but we have a better chance with Campbell or EYJ.

  • Taskmaster4450

    Be realistic.

To start, the Mets arent going to sit $7M.

And secondly, who is he bumping off the field? EYJ? Not exactly an all star he is taking ABs from.

  • Taskmaster4450

    Better chance with EYJ?

He sucks and has done little to nothing.

  • goorru

EYJ has done little, CY does nothing.

  • willymayshayes

Not sure why so many people are sooo worried about Wheeler. He has good velocity and good movement. Locating his pitches better and he can reach his potential.

Bad command and some nerves in his first 9 games of his first full yr in the majors!!! unheard of!!!!

  • willymayshayes

As long as Lagares and Flores are playing I’m not going to complain.

    much.

  • Tommy

True! Still even when Campell makes an out, the ball is ripped!

  • donobrien

EYJ Not an all star, but he helps create runs. I don’t see CY doing that much. Personally, I’d rather see Campbell. He may or may not be a keeper, but he looks pretty damn good so far.

  • ed charles

I’d try Flores in the 5th hole.

  • Tommy

And even though I don’t think he should be starting all the time, I do think they have to give him a few starts a week to at least try to get him going? No?

  • donobrien

    I guess you’re right.

  • Andrew Herbst

    Big start today for Wheeler.

  • willymayshayes

He’s a good story, him and Satin are similar players.
Though Campball seems to have a little more power.
Brown is another good AAAA/mlb player.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    I really want Flores 2nd.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Collins is too busy listening to the OPPOSING team’s manager to know any better.

  • sarge69

Guess that TC is trying to freeze Soup[, thinking that playing CY against his old team will translate into a Granderson type break out at Yankee Stadium.

Does he not see that the stadium made it easier for Grandy to hit, not that Citi is a hitters park but the line of thinking by this mgr and coaching staff should just depend on fortune cookies for all that they have come up with.

Kid is hitting great, 27 yr old kid LOL, so play him, please.

  • Kevin H

Black’s Vegas numbers look good. For some reason I was under the impression he was stinking it up down there.

  • ed charles

TC won’t be that drastic. I just think we have a better shot with him in an RBI hole then CY.

  • TruthOverLies

Bad command is his MO. It’s something you’re either gifted with or you’re not. His entire minor league career has been wildness. You expecting a switch to click is simply cliche’ material. Nerves have nothing to do with it. Today, he will pitch well, because the DBacks aren’t that strong a team and they’re playing in Citi. Perfect recipe for a good game pitched by Wheeler, if he can throw some strikes.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

That’s exactly why this team will be held back: Collins refuses to roll the dice. Backman says that the kid is a run producer, and right now, his hot bat needs to be at the top of the order with Lagares & Murphy.

  • donobrien

I’m not looking at this from the owner’s point of view, where he has an investment in CY and might want to trade him in mid-season. Maybe, just maybe he hits better if he gets most of the ABs. But Campbell is hot now. I wouldn’t sit him.

  • Anthony

Robert Carson just signed with the dodgers how did we let him get away?

  • The most athletic weatherman

I agree with you, if anything he makes more contact than CY and Duda which should translate to being more productive instead of those two rally killers.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    I smell sarcasm….

  • goorru

I think they should have kept him in AAA, he’s a lefty that throws mid 90’s.

  • mr1313

The first 20k fans to enter the stadium today get a David Wright canvas so that means they will have what 5 K left over.

  • Anthony

    Haha your very observant

  • MikePiazza3186

Today’s game is big because you would figure we at least split tomorrow

  • IfYouSheaSo

well, 17 walks in 18.2 isn’t lighting it up either.

  • ed charles

Um a guy named Koufax and another named Ryan found control after a few years…

  • KennyandtheMets

    Campbell.

  • Kevin H

Ugh… His WHIP must terrible. The fact that his ERA is as low as it is despite that many walks is surprising.

  • HawkZon

    Where is Campbell?

  • HawkZon

    10k.

  • HawkZon

    BOOM!!

  • donobrien

Sitting so CY can hopefully start hitting and be tradeable in July. Winning today is not that important to the Wilpons. There’s 7.5 million at stake. Let’s see if CY is a difference maker today. Oh boy.

  • goorru

Chris Young will take care of the 5 K’s

  • Jimmy Broadway

I agree Campbell, and if EY plays he needs to be batting 8th, Lagares is the leadoff hitter and shouldn’t be taken out of there for EY or anybody else with this roster

  • Pedro’s Rooster

“We had to give CY 450 at-bats, and pay the remainder of his salary, but we’re really excited about the 27-year-old AA reliever we got back in this trade–we’re confident we can straighten out his control issues. It’s a win-win for both teams.”

same as last night..Playing CY to try to get him going against his old team, although Dback’s are NOT the last team he played for.
Funny, did not look like he cared to stick to his old team last night, when he did not bother to jump to catch Hill’s HR, that barely made it over the orange line.
Seems like CY is playing to stick it to his CURRENT team

  • Fast Eddie

No Soup? I was all ready to say Soup’s on!…but of course Terry ruined it. He would rather play our 7.5 million dollar left fielder who isn’t worth a quarter that much.

  • james

They are only playing CY so he can be showcased for a trade.

  • 94SupraTT

Not even Shaq could’ve caught that. Were you, by any chance, completely inebriated while watching our beloved mets last night?

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Best you’ll get for CY is probably a bullpen arm.

  • Out of place Mets fan

    TdA 2 Flores 5

  • pastline63

Hopefully some scout will say : “Hey he needs a change of atmosphere he is not a NY guy” . Then we might get something, but a low level arm is maybe the best we get at this point.

  • KennyandtheMets

The more he plays, the lower his value gets. He can’t hit at the major league level anymore.

  • I completely get all of the complaints about Duda/CY playing over Campbell but I think we should look at Flores and Lagares as a small victory and it points to the fact that sooner or later TC will be force to get it. As long as he gives Campbell a few opportunities a week, hopefully he’ll ease him into the lineup more and more if the success continues.

  • Chris H

That’s great if we a anything for CY. If SA can pull a deal for a bullpen arm for him and not pay any salary with the trade then the guys a genius.

  • BigAl831

It’s funny that people are complaining so much about Eric Campbell.

Great guy, good approach at the plate, plays multiple positions, solid bench piece. That’s it.

  • Chris H

Wheeler better have at least his B+ game today lol

  • KennyandtheMets

How can you know this? The only way to find out is to play him regularly.

  • Anthony

Today he gives you a better chance to win

  • Anthony

That’s great if he could get anyone out

  • BigAl831

    Maybe. Maybe not.

  • Tommy

maybe he is a solid bench piece, but how in the world do you know for 100% fact that is true? Also, if you have watched this team at all this year, you know they cannot score, and he is hitting it on the nose every time he is at bat right now! So why not play the hot hand? Couldn’t you use all the help you can get?

  • MetsfanInParadise

Or an Arizona guy or an Oakland guy…

  • BigAl831

CY provides power potential that Campbell cannot give us. I want him getting more than a month and a half of regular AB’s before I give up on him. Campbell will see plenty of playing time all around the diamond.

  • KennyandtheMets

It landed behind the railing, which is well above the orange line. He had no chance and he knew it. The problem with CY is not his effort, it is his hitting.

  • Mets Fan in Paris

I wish Sandy would think from another GM’s perspective. If you were a GM from a different team, what would I realistically offer for CY whose OPS is batting avg. is .206 and OPS .646 and a prorated $7.5 million salary? Even if I were an opposing GM and the Mets ate most all of his salary, I still wouldn’t offer the Mets anything of significance. Which then means…why in the world is he still getting playing time for us?

  • Chris H

I wonder who the PTBNL is gonna be in the Ike trade

  • Frank Francisco

I’m glad that the Tejada experiment is finally over, but how much longer must the Lucas Duda and Chris Young experiments drag on?

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Have d’Arnaud hit consistently first when he comes back.

  • IfYouSheaSo

With you on Chris Young, but Duda is fine. Not good, not great, but fine.

  • Metropolitan

maybe by some miracle this game will be the the start where wheeler starts to become what he was hyped to be rather than looking like a 5th stater..if that

  • Frank Francisco

On a good team, you’re right. That’s exactly what he is. On a team cluttered with a 1B in Duda with a .700 OPS and two OF in Young^2 with sub .700 OPS’s, it’s hard to believe Campbell couldn’t do a better job.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

They’ll be fortunate if anyone takes his salary. The Mets may have to eat that mistake and watch CY become what I’ve always said he would best be for another team: a guy off the bench.

  • HarveyKsYou

A future Matt Harvey. You heard It here first.

  • MetsLGM

Im so glad that yesterday it got rained out. Its almost like a rule for me to miss colon starts, hated that signing from day one. Lets go edwin wheeler 😉

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

The Duda experiment will continue until they trade for a true slugger at 1B. There’s many potential options at the deadline, like Allen Craig, Matt Adams and Michael Cuddyer. CY’s only here for so long and no more until Puello comes up.

  • Frank Francisco

Duda’s OPS at .726 ranks 21/28 out of all 1B in baseball, not to mention he has average defense and poor speed.

  • MetsLGM

Allen Craig please that dude is a hitter 🙂

  • KennyandtheMets

CY has been a sub par hitter for a few years. How much longer would you give him? His power is basically useless because he doesn’t square enough balls up anymore. Not since hys first couple of seasons in the majors.

  • 2rings

    Duda is awful

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

I’d love Craig as well, but who knows what STL will want since they’re well stocked all over the place.

  • Frank Francisco

Puello (.260/.326/.350 in hitter-friendly Vegas) isn’t likely to be promoted any time soon, and you’re dreaming if you think the Mets will actually acquire someone like that at the deadline lol.

  • MetsLGM

They have taveras to step in they’ll live without him lol. He can play 1st and right its perfect for us

  • Chris H

    98 nice

  • Frank Francisco

Yeah a lot of people are seriously misinformed as to how bad he really is.

  • MetsLGM

Hope zach can keep up that velocity later in the game

  • 2rings

I have seen better players in the Independent league

  • BarnRat

    Nuke Laloosh

  • 2rings

I will take a little less velocity, and more control. He lacks the consistent put out pitch at this point in his career.

  • HawkZon

The BP is going to get killed this weekend.

  • Frank Francisco

What frustrates me is that there are immediate better options (not good options, but better options) in Campbell, Satin, Dykstra, or even Lutz.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

What will the Cardinals want in return tho?

  • BigAl831

    Good inning for Wheelz

  • Avery Decker

Wheeler missed his location on that first strikeout that was 98 MPH. Got ahead 0-2 on Goldschmidt but was then worked back to a full count. Nice inning for Wheeler but definitely some obvious things to work on.

  • MetsLGM

Yeah, but often times we get neither with him, so getting by on stuff until he learns to pitch to hitters will be fine

  • Kevin H

I take it you will not be attending Bartolo Colon poster night next weekend.

  • MetsLGM

    Wheels up !

  • BigAl831

In his defense, Goldy somehow laid off that nasty slider that just missed. He’s one of the best hitters in the game. Good inning.

  • Avery Decker

    fair enough.

  • 2rings

Exactly!!(well except Satin) We can all see it, the announcers can see it. Bobby O can see it, but the FO LOVES this guy and will not make a move

  • Anthony

    One down eight to go

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    Sure about that?

    Puello recently: .385/.500/.654/1.154

If he hits consistently over the next month, he’ll be close.

  • 2rings

LOL…good point..neither is what we get more often then not

  • MetsLGM

idk, is the poster really free? :p. Soon the mets will have you pay for the promotions if they could

  • Anthony

    Let’s hammer Collmenter

  • Frank Francisco

If he can do that for a month or so, he might have a shot.

  • MetsLGM

Im not sure, either a combination of mid level pitching guys or a guy like thor and a lower level guy. My guess, and honestly he would be a nice addition we have pitching up the nose.

  • Arjun Vidudala

i expected a super clutch walk

  • Frank Francisco

Collmenter left it up, and David slammed it.

It isn’t a coincidence. Since the beginning of the season, pitchers have been nibbling the bottom of the zone which is why he keeps getting cheap singles and groundouts.

  • Arjun Vidudala

  • BigAl831

Yeah man! I mean a career .882 OPS! WHAT A JOKE!

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

I don’t believe they have a shot at Craig or Adams, but Cuddyer could happen since Colorado is stocked in the OF (even though CarGo’s hurt at the moment), Morneau is at 1B and Cuddyer’s in a walk year.

There goes our 1st baseman boys and girls. The guy who management were hoping would hit over 30 hrs and 100 rbi’s. Duda is such a DUD! Certain players have that knack to drive in runs and especially key runs. Duda is NOT that player. He will either have a big game during a blowout win or if we lost 10-5. Mark 1st base as another position that needs to get addressed this off season and I don’t see Sandy addressing all of these holes. As long as he is getting paid he will care more about having a strong farm system compared to having a strong major league team. We are doomed!

Is Duda a nice bench piece? YES.
Do the Mets realize this by now? Maybe not.

  • Metropolitan

    wheeler is just dreadful

  • Waz0787

    Booooooo at wheeler

  • Frank Francisco

Not even a nice bench piece tbh. He might be a decent player in a much smaller park where his warning-track power would play.

  • 2rings

CY giving up an another one

I would boooo if I were there because he sucks

good thing we left the bases loaded.

  • BigAl831

    Oh come on.

No bias there. Gimme a break.

A line drive off the wall and it is CY’s fault.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

I say he’d be a nice bench piece because of his power and the fact that he’s leading the team with RISP (even though he didn’t get it done with the bases loaded).

That ball may not have been catchable but CY gave up so early.

  • MikePiazza3186

    Wheeler is really a stiff

Another one of these Wheeler starts it looks like.

  • mets4lyfe

I’ll start looking forward to Wheeler starts when he’s not walking 4-5 batters an outing.

  • bspo1

    Wheeler has really really regressed.

  • 2rings

not bias at all..he gave up on it, whether he would have caught it or not

  • MetsLGM

  • BCleveland3381

Wheeler is really bad right now. He might end up being a really good MLB pitcher, but he’s not ready right now. DeGrom is so much better than Wheeler is right now.

  • Waz0787

Sandy has failed every way possible as our GM.

  • BigAl831

He didn’t give up on it. He realized he couldn’t make a play on it so he played it off the wall perfectly.

  • MikeyT

Big time. Most of his pitches miss the plate by 3 feet. He was a much better pitcher last year

  • Shea2citi

Or maybe he’s just not that good. Has a hard but straight fastball, walks a ton of hitters, can’t put hitters away, his breaking stuff is subpar. I could go on and on.

  • Anthony

    Watching paint dry

  • Chris H

Wheels I think it’s time to go to the desert and work out your flaws. Let’s go wheeler

  • Super T

The Mets played 6 games this month in Yankees stadium and Coors field. You take those 6 games out and the team is averaging between 2-3 runs a game.

  • Metropolitan

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

And we’re right back where we started last night: down 2-0.

  • bspo1

who cares, he also would be 0-4.

  • Shea2citi

I’d honestly like to see more of DeGrom and Montero and less of Wheeler.

  • 2rings

  • MetsLGM

that why they call you mr. negativity 🙂 though really where is the stuff that was so hyped? They said his fastball was better or equivalent to harveys. no way in a blue hell is it compared to any of the stuff harvey has

  • Metropolitan

sounds as if they are blaming Harvey for his his sucess for Wheelers failure….strange

  • MikeyT

    Wheeler belongs in the minors

  • BCleveland3381

1st and 3rd with no out. The runner from 3rd was pretty likely to score, but you gotta make him score on an out.

  • BigAl831

    Because he’s struggling in May?

    That’s stupid.

  • Anthony

    C’mon rain

  • Shea2citi

Yeah, that’s the difference. Harvey has excellent secondary stuff and a bulldog mentality.

  • Metropolitan

    LOL!!That just killed me

  • MetsLGM

SO when is wheeler going to develop into a quality pitcher? 2020? How long does he need to adjust, he was hyped im no apologist of him so trade him if teams are still thinking he can reach his potential

  • Frank Francisco

Wheeler has seriously regressed, it’s very frustrating.

  • 2rings

    had him at 3rd

  • 94SupraTT

You should be traded for some bandwidth.

  • HarveyKsYou

    Wheelers lacking confidence big time.

  • Shea2citi

Let’s be real, he’s struggled the entire season.

  • bspo1

    yup, he’s pitching scared.

  • Manager of The Year

Are you at the stadium because the view from the television doesn’t give a great view

  • MetsLGM

close to 50 pitches before the 2 innings.. typical mets pitchers counts

  • BCleveland3381

Ok Wheeler, way to fight through. Keep it there and at least we’re in it.

  • BigAl831

Wheeler really brings out the most idiotic, dim witted Mets fans.

  • donobrien

Lucky to get out of that with just 2 runs.

  • BCleveland3381

You can see where the runner was when Wheeler picked up the ball, he could have gotten him by 4 feet.

  • MetsLGM

didnt we deem montero a bust after the dodger start? 😉

  • 2rings

no. at home, but the last angle on the replay showed the runner at the SS spot when Zach got the ball..Not blaming Wheeler, if that play is done correctly, it is the catcher’s call as to where the pitcher should throw

  • HarveyKsYou

This makes me worried because if Thor comes up here and struggles he will have a hard time due to the fans.. This is why the orginaztion hyping these prospects up so much hurts.

  • bspo1

Oh another Met pitcher at 40-50 pitches through 2 innings, well done!

  • donobrien

    That was on Recker, too.

  • BigAl831

That’s not true. You have to be patient with these guys. Mets fans don’t seem to understand that not everyone is going to pitch like Harvey. They’re going to have growing pains. He is figuring things out. You have to give him a chance to work through a slump, much like you would a young hitter.

  • BCleveland3381

There isn’t a whole lot the organization can do. Thor and Wheeler were traded for studs, the media was going to grab ahold of those two more than any pitching prospect no matter how the Mets handle them. They will be expected to produce immediately, which isn’t fair for any young kid.

  • Manager of The Year

Collmenter didn’t get out of a bases loaded jam. Duda got Collmenter out of a bases loaded jam

  • MetsLGM

Even though he got out i like seeing flores, its like he has a clue what he is doing at the plate

  • Arjun Vidudala

how does one take two hittable pitches and then swing at a pitch high and away?

  • HarveyKsYou

That’s what Duda is known for.

  • Shea2citi

Oh stop it. You like to defend every crap player on this team as if you work for the Wilpon’s. Wheeler has regressed and there’s no other way around it. He’s young and will be given a chance to prove otherwise but right now he sucks. There’s no defending a pitcher that’s 1-4 with a 5 era. Some of us live in the real world and base our reactions off of results not hype. Remember there’s other pitchers on the rise. Wheeler is pitching for his job.

  • BigAl831

I like to defend every crap player on this team? Oh name them please.

If you think Wheeler is a crap player, you’re precisely the Mets fan I was referring to.

  • Shea2citi

  • Arjun Vidudala

lol wheeler is depressing at the plate, more so then bartolo smh

  • BigAl831

I am entitled to my opinion as well right?

Never personally attacked any particular poster.

  • HawkZon

He has absolutely, no mound presence.

  • Brian Regan

Exactly, duda will never be a clutch hitter because he is not aggressive. He always finds himself behind in the count with men on base then takes a weak swing. We need to either get a power hitting first baseman or a good shortstop and move Flores to first

  • Out of place Mets fan

Really TC brings them out, Wheeler is just the photo on the invitation

  • MetsLGM

There are tons of young pitchers around the league doing just fine and werent as regarded as wheeler was. So stop giving him excuses, I hope he grows but so far he is playing catchup

  • BigAl831

Did you not watch last year?

There are also tons of young pitchers who struggle and get through them and blossom into a better pitcher. That’s the way the game of baseball works. You develop your youth.

  • Shea2citi

Wheeler had a good season last year but he was never super impressive. Now he isn’t fooling anyone. Yes he is young and will have growing pains but he has been terrible with no signs of proving other wise. The mets have a ton of young pitching. Harvey, Wheeler, Montero, Thor, DeGrom with Niese and Gee already established. Some of these guys are gonna be left without a chair when the music stops. Everyone is pitching for their job.

  • Shea2citi

Let’s be honest. Everyone including myself wants to see Flores start and Tejada rot on the bench. In the offseason though there will be some nice SS talent to sign. No excuses, they have to sign a SS.

  • MetsLGM

we are annoyed at him because if he develops like he is supposed to then wheeler will be a key cog in getting us back into the postseason. Some of us dont want to be under 500 forever

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

LOL this is as rich as watching Collins get cranky about Lagares.

  • Kevin H

I think top priority is a heavy hitting corner OF. If he happens to play LF then great. If he plays RF, Granderson can play LF. If we got that, I could live with Duda and Flores.

  • BigAl831

That’s fine. But if you think giving up on a potential ace after 25 starts is your answer, then you’re going to be very disappointed.

  • konyc

    Another 1-2-3 inning for Wheeler.

  • MikePiazza3186

    Get lost he sux

  • Manager of The Year

That can all be avoided if it weren’t for the error. These types of runs hurt confidence. That could have been a 1-2-3 inning instead it’s like what 6 batters now?

  • Pedro’s Rooster

Unless his pitch count is 150, I don’t see that happening.

  • Anthony

    Get in the game cy

  • MetsfanInParadise

  • Taskmaster4450

Probably didnt have the grip on the wet grass.

  • bspo1

so thats two games in a row that we’ve been down to the D-backs…one of the worst teams in the league. What does that say about us?

  • Flores error is big right now. Wheeler hitting a batter didn’t help but, Flores error opened this door. He still looks hesitant and a little fearful around SS. I’m a huge Flores supporter and fan but, he has to make those plays. He has to play with more confidence and be a little aggressive out there. Hope he gets a few hits this game to make up for that error.

  • Fast Eddie

I’m still waiting for Wheeler to be…Wheeler. Or is this the real Zack Wheeler? I am not necessarily down on him, I just would like to see a couple of dominant performances mixed in with the inconsistent ones with high pitch counts…

  • Taskmaster4450

Wheeler still lacks the ability to put hitters away. He gets two strikes and then throws 4 more pitches.

  • Shea2citi

If the mets are swept by the dbacks, does TC get fired?! I would think it would at least be considered.

  • Metropolitan

two people who hopefully will not be on this team next year.

  • HarveyKsYou

CY has already cost us a run today in the field. He gives you nothing.

  • Arjun Vidudala

atleast we can hit collmenter with the exception of duda and cy -_-

  • Manager of The Year

Duda sucks. I’m tired if seeing crap at first base. Give Cambell a chance. Give Dykstra a chance anyone but the guy that can’t clutch hit for his life. The guy that can only get RBI when the game isn’t close to close

  • Mike C

Duda’s killing me!!!!! Dont know how many times he has let a hittable first pitch go by for a strike!!! Swing the damn bat. U dont have enough talent to pass on hittable pitches!!!!

  • Frank Francisco

Duda and the FO’s attachment to him makes me want to eat nails.

  • everybodysbuddy

Campbell needs to play. Maybe time for Dykstra too.

  • Manager of The Year

    So is our manager

  • MetsLGM

You know, our offense isnt atriocious we can get some hits, but players like CY and Duda who kill rallies are holding us back we are one more good rbi guy from a legit lineup. Who says rbi is an overrated stat?

  • MetsfanInParadise

    …next month

  • Mike C

    $7 million spent wisely

  • bspo1

    doubtful.

  • Fast Eddie

Chris Young is not a very good baseball player…
Chris Young was a very bad signing…
Chris Young is not worth anywhere near 7.5 million dollars…
Chris Young is wasting a roster spot of a younger player that deserves a chance to play that could be a part of our future…
Chris Young does not look good in a Mets uniform…
Chris Young could not get out of here fast enough for me…
    Did I leave anything out?

  • MAS0031

Go get em Zack with another 30 pitch inning.

  • MetsfanInParadise

    wishful thinking.

  • everybodysbuddy

I think Nails is doing time right now

  • bspo1

Chris Young could not agree with you more.

  • goorru

TC must be sticking it to Sandy by putting CY 5th. Here you want me to play this piece of garbage, here he is right in your face.

  • Frank Francisco

    You forogt Duda.

  • Brian Regan

Fuckin, CY and duda are killing this team.. Terrible

  • MetsLGM

That his breath stinks and looks funny?

  • Mike C

Need wally to fire them up

  • IfYouSheaSo

Yes, because TC is a master of subtlety

  • Mets Fan in Paris

    $7.5 million
I only add the extra 500k b/c that’s probably about the amount that his replacement (Soup) costs even though he’s $7 million times better than CY.

  • bspo1

Bad pitching + Bad Offense = Your NY Mets.

  • Arjun Vidudala

Gotta CY going, Kirk said hes a 25-30 HR guy…

  • GB

Duda and CY = sandy’s horrific GMing again. I Told you he is 54th out of 30th among GM’s. Ike seems to be doing well, like a lot of us predicted. Wheeler sucks too….trade him now and lt deGrom takes his spot

  • SinHalo27

Ronnie breaking hearts: “I’m never gonna be a pitching coach…”

  • Brian Regan

Flores should be batting 5th. Dude is going to lead off every inning after the other 2 dicks gets out

  • everybodysbuddy

He runs hot and cold. Unfortunately his hot streaks last two days, and his cold streaks for weeks!

  • MetsfanInParadise

Well, it’s still close, though saying that has just jinxed us. Wanna bet the wheels come off this inning?

  • Anthony

Rod Carew is shaking his head somewhere

  • Chris H

The league knows what the mets offensive approach is to work the count. It seams the 1st pitch to every batter in the best one to swing at at the only guy that does it is Murph. This plan sucks. Time to change it up or fire everyone

  • Pedro’s Rooster

Doubt it. TC loves long-ago past performance. Besides, Kirk Gibson told Terry that CY is awesome.

  • KennyandtheMets

Yep. You can’t score when your LFer and 1B can’t get enough big hits.

  • Bail4Nails

Sandy, every Major League team just called. They said Chris Young SUCKS, thanks for playing him, but they’re not interested in a Trade.
Okay, can we play Campbell now?

  • Mets4ever

Yeah but he saved the Wilpons 3 million. They LOVE him

  • Brian Regan

If we keep playing duda and CY we will be 15 games under 500 by mid june

  • Waz0787

Hey destry, captain america, manhattan and jason bay? Where u guys at? Duda and CY are jokes

  • HarveyKsYou

    We were last year.

  • SinHalo27

Plus Kirk + MDD in AAA. Looks like they got a bit carried away w Byrd’s success last year and thought they could hit paydirt w another FA OF pick-up.

  • BarnRat

    Slump and Slumper

  • MetsLGM

Kirk would be better than CY like he would at least match what he is doing, wasted money man.. :/

  • Pedro’s Rooster

“I won 7 batting titles, and this dumbass is my legacy?”

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Just for sh*ts & giggles, I’ll leave this quote again by our genius manager:

“Kirk said if he gets hot he has the ability to hit 25-30 homers. We need that. The only way to get that done is to keep him in the lineup and give him a chance.”

  • goorru

Yeah most likely but Sandy loves them too.

  • They need to flip CY and Flores in this line up. Flores makes more consistent contact and has proven he will drive in runs more often than not. Strike outs do nothing in that situation and though a walk is better than nothing, it would have only helped in that situation because it would have given Flores a chance. Terry Collins needs to be fired as he does not put a smart line up together ever!

  • Arjun Vidudala

    Just typed that below lol

  • Pedro’s Rooster

We’re gonna get frequent flyer miles outta that quote this year. 🙂

  • Arjun Vidudala

Feel bad for Grandy, if it wasnt for citi wouldve been outta here

  • HarveyKsYou

    Never has a 1-2-3 inning.

  • Anthony

On a positive ex met note dicky was dealing today

  • BigAl831

OMG MONTERO IS 0-2 WITH A 7 ERA TRAID HIM HE IS HORRIBLE HE AND WHEELR R BUMS

  • Kevin H

Who would you replace them with? EYJ and Campbell? No matter who of that 4 play, it’s not exactly a formula for playoff baseball.

  • Tango01

He probably told Terry Tejada is an All Star and should play and Lagares is over rate should sit. I bet Terry contemplated it.

  • Chris H

Don’t ever feel bad for a guy making 15 mil a year lol

  • Mets Fan in Paris

When did he say that? Recently?

  • MetsLGM

They ate themselves to death from depression that sandy isnt who they thought he was

  • Arjun Vidudala

lol just bout to say that, hes been repeating this routine last couple games

  • BigAl831

UGH WHEELR IS HORRIBLE HE GAVE UP A BLOOP HIT

  • Pedro’s Rooster

    Yesterday, I believe.

  • SinHalo27

tough graphic of NL West free agent signings….Michael Morse could have been had for $6mil and he plays 1B or OF, hitting .263 10HRs, played every game this year…

  • Waz0787

That’s right.. Wheeler had over 25+ start to prove. He can’t throw strikes it’s the same crap. Every start.

  • goorru

At least Carew doesn’t have to worry about anyone else calling him for batting tips.

  • bspo1

Sandy doesn’t know how to evaluate talent.

  • BigAl831

I wouldn’t really he say he plays OF. He more stands in the OF.

  • Arjun Vidudala

hahah just this once, the moment passed anyways

  • Mets Fan in Paris

Thanks man…that’s funny. And being that Terry is so dumb to fall for it, I bet every other manager who comes in this season will tell him the same thing.

  • goorru

This coming from a team that has Bobby Abreu occasionally in the outfield.

  • MetsLGM

For those thinking wheeler is in the clear just watch.. he always has 2 disaster innings in each of his starts. Its like insanity the same things being done over and over again

  • BigAl831

    No that’s coming from me.

  • MetsLGM

dickey hath cursed TDA and thor, for betraying him

  • goorru

He could have been the righty platoon with Duda and would probably be starting in LF at this point.

  • SinHalo27

hahahaha, 3 errors in 356 games, I’ll take it esp in a line-up where 3-4-5 looks like Wright-Grandy-Morse, at least you’ll get production with his 100+ K’s

  • BigAl831

Oh I would love Morse as our 1B. Not in the OF.

  • goorru

Well you have the same dumb logic as Sandy.

  • MetsfanInParadise

The Mets have a habit of making the least of the most, as Gary put it

  • BigAl831

Yeah you’re right I do know a lot more about baseball than you! Just like Sandy! Thanks!

  • Manager of The Year

Flores seems to be struggling with those pitches up and away seems to be extending his arms and reaching for it

  • Tango01

Duda is such a joke! Look at last years stats he hit 15 hrs but only had 33 rbi’s. The man is allergic to rbi’s . Seriously ask yourselves when do you recall Duda carrying this team or going on a 3 game or more tear. At the end of the game I always ask myself did Duda play? Just because his contributions are so small.

  • SinHalo27

apparently he makes waaaaaay to much for the Coupons to spend on a premium position like 1B

  • Waz0787

But but but some mets are delusional he is part of generation 10.0

  • BigAl831

He and Lagares have similar weaknesses.

  • Chris H

Recker had some big hits earlier in the season but now we are seeing the real Reck

  • ed charles

Duda is weak. He looks scared. He has no plan at the plate.

  • BigAl831

Clayton Kershaw WHIP after 20 starts: 1.4

  • BarnRat

I wouldn’t know, I always fall asleep during his ABs

  • ed charles

    so does he.

  • He has a plan. It’s whatever TC, Sandy and Hudgens tell him to do. Which equates to just sucking!

  • Mike C

If the mets get swept by the dbacks do they get demoted to AAA?

  • donobrien

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

  • Anthony

Careful you will hurt his fragile confidence

  • MetsLGM

can every guy on the team share the same weakness so they can be just like them 🙂

  • 94SupraTT

You’re right. Cut wheeler! He sucks and is a bust!

  • ed charles

These are major leaguers. Put the ball in play. CY should be benched. We’re gonna have to pay him his SEVEN MILLION either way. Let’s not have him do any more damage.

  • Chris H

Just finished my banner for banner day it reads. I hate you Wilpons and Terry sucks balls.

  • WilponsNeed2Go

Thankfully this is not the English Premier League.

  • MetsLGM

lets go back to the basics, demoted to rookie league ball :p

  • HarveyKsYou

You will make it out of Citi Field a hero.

  • 94SupraTT

You’re just getting pwned left and right today. It’s entertaining.

  • Pedro’s Rooster

What a coincidence–mine is a pictorial version of that.

  • “We had new owners who weren’t going to spend any money,” said Alderson. “They made it clear that this had to be a business. And so we suddenly were put in the position of: we can only afford a one-tool player. Which tool is it going to be?” What—and this is what the question amounted to—was the efficient way to spend money on baseball players? The first, short answer, according to a pamphlet commissioned by Alderson, was to spend it on hitters. The pamphlet was written by a former aerospace engineer turned baseball writer, Eric Walker. Fielding, Walker wrote, was “at most five percent of the game.” The rest was pitching and offense, and while “good pitchers are usually valued properly, good batters often are not.” In Walker’s words:

    ==================================

This is why Alderson has no problem with Murphy at 2B….

    or Duda in RF ( 2012 )

    or Abreau in RF ( 2014 )

this man subscribes to a theory that says fielding is at most FIVE percent of the game.

  • How is it that Ike Davis has a better OBP and better batting average since the trade, than Duda?

  • Fast Eddie

Can you imagine how bad banner day would be if they just let the fans say whatever they wanted? There would be more “F*** You Wilpons” than you could count. There still may be a bunch that they don’t even let on the field…

  • MetsLGM

You can get goldy out but you cant get a guy like hill out? Wheeler you are weird

  • SinHalo27

With this FO, the countdown is on until Fernando Martinez is invited back ::smh::

  • Mike C

Sadly they score more in the premier league

  • Tango01

There are so many holes on this team from ownership to front office to players and managing and the coaching staff. None of the players are having great years and seem to be regressing with this coaching staff. Hitters can’t produce when men on base and our young pitching is not pitching like they thought they would. We thought 2014 things were going to start being exciting again. It’s the opposite.

  • Metropolitan

unfortunately that will not make it passed the banner censors

  • BigAl831

So nobody wants to comment when Wheeler is pitching well?

OHHHHHH OK SRY I FORGOT WHEELR SUX BALLZ SHOULD STRUCK OUT GOLDY QUICKER

  • HarveyKsYou

I’m just really annoyed at this terrible offense.

  • MetsLGM

Yeah dont worry aaron hill will get him. I just commented on that below care to look? 🙂

  • Fast Eddie

How about Terry, Fred and Sandy’s head coming out of a horses ass?

  • Anthony

Where is your defense of cy

  • Charley’s Twin

I would make one if they didn’t have censors!

  • BigAl831

Lol you’re getting pwned by your mom in your butt. It’s entertaining.

  • MikePiazza3186

Take it easy he’s giving up 3 in the 5th nothing about that is well lemme see him go 7

  • Metropolitan

yeah 5th inning and wheeler is only at like 95 pitches…..

  • WilponsNeed2Go

Well I say this, because if MLB had relegation like the Premier League, the Mets would be at DSL 2 right now.

  • MetsLGM

shhhh dont feed the trolls :p mets fans contain yourselves 🙂

  • MikePiazza3186

Saying wheeler has been a stiff this year isn’t being a troll it’s being a realist

  • Charley’s Twin

    You suck.

  • Fast Eddie

He has a plan…take lots of pitches, then swing and miss.

  • BigAl831

    Your moms breasts.

  • Pedro’s Rooster

“Terry, you should be playing Tejada more. That kid’s gonna be an All-Star soon.”

  • goorru

That’s the irony here, he thinks everyone else are the trolls.

  • MetsLGM

I know he has lol i said that in response to the explosion of comments to this lol

  • 94SupraTT

Sorry, didn’t realize you were 10. That explains your blind idiocy.

  • BigAl831

OH GOD EVERY METS FANS NIGHTMARE!!! Wheeler 123 and CY doing something well!!

    AHHHHHH

  • Joey D.

Got home a while ago. Heard some on radio. Wheeler wild as usual. CY gets a hit and that is a dribbler. Duda K’s with bases loaded. Wheeler finally coming around in the fifth despite CY makng a good catch.

That’s about it – can write the recap.

  • MikePiazza3186

    Nice catch ya bum

  • MikeyT

    Terrific catch!

  • Anthony

    Welcome to the game cy

  • Chris H

Why couldn’t he have broke a finger going into the wall CY

  • Darling made a good point. Wheeler looks like he is getting stronger as the game moves forward. Leave him in there, let him pitch. Nice catch by CY too bad he is better at hitting outfield walls than hitting baseballs.

  • BigAl831

I’m actually 9 so shut up.

  • MetsLGM

    Flappy old saggy breasts lol

  • BigAl831

    That’s what I’m talking about!

  • Andrew Herbst

    Bout time CY did something.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    OMG CY made a catch!

    *slow clap*

  • MikePiazza3186

This team is the worst offense I’ve ever witnessed

  • MetsLGM

Play mustve been worth 7.5 million. About time you woke up CY

  • Joey D.

    Hi Brian and pedros,

You two actually going? Gonna spend your money on the Wilpons to help contribute getting better players.

    Bless you both.

  • HarveyKsYou

    Two pitches and two outs..

  • MikePiazza3186

Really making him grind this inning

  • 94SupraTT

So you wish for our players to get injured….nice. what’s with all the morons today?

  • Ace719

It’s not cool to wish injury on anybody, no matter how bad the player sucks

  • BigAl831

So you want them being aggressive or not?

  • goorru

CY struck out with second and third and one out.

  • MetsLGM

    Another wright single time

  • MikePiazza3186

Yea I do but it would be nice to get some hits

  • Joey D.

R.A. won his fifth today. Reyes and him on Blue Jays who are in first place.

  • Chris H

Are you crazy. I will not step foot in citi until they Fire Terry

  • Metropolitan

    bout time…

  • WilponsNeed2Go

    And wrong.

  • goorru

    LOL maybe not

  • BigAl831

    You’re such an idiot.

  • Joey D.

    GO DAVID!

  • MikePiazza3186

    Captain is heating up

  • Anthony

    The colonel

  • Emmanuel

I THOUGHT HE ONLY HIT SINGLES THO?!

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Nice HR. Couldn’t have done that an AB ago?

  • MetsLGM

On David Wright canvas print day!! Lol

  • Arjun Vidudala

    WRIGHT!

  • Arjun Vidudala

    DAVID WOO!!!

  • Waz0787

As usual wright hits a HR when no one on base.

  • Andrew Herbst

    O Captain My Captain!

  • Super T

LOL, for those who don’t have the SNY telecast after DW just homered Darling commented …”Well hello apple, haven’t seen you in a long time.”

  • BigAl831

    hahahahahah really?

  • MetsLGM

A single that went 300 plus feet 🙂

  • donobrien

    Keith said,”hello Apple, it’s been a while”

  • Joey D.

    Loved Ron’s “hello apple”

  • MikePiazza3186

    Yea but we needed that

  • goorru

    sure I did,

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    Hook, line, sinker.

    Take a bow.

  • MetsLGM

that was a single man, :p a single that just went really far that is

  • BigAl831

    You lack brain.

  • mr. belvedere

Man David Wright really sucks huh

  • Chris H

What happens to this offense if Grandy and DW start hitting for power as advertised. I only hope

  • MikePiazza3186

    Uncle Jessie?

  • WilponsNeed2Go

Wright haters will erase this event from their selective memory entirely , or discount it by saying it wasn’t in a clutch situation.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Needs another power bat with them to make something happen.

  • Anthony

    Real classy little al

  • BigAl831

    haha absolutely.

    It’s very sad and funny.

  • Shea2citi

    +1

  • MetsLGM

I know how unclutch, no one was on base, hes just like duda with the solo hrs

  • 94SupraTT

This coming from the President of the Young (EY, CY) fan club? K.

  • BigAl831

    It’s BIG Al silly goose.

  • MikePiazza3186

    Clutch is clutch bud

  • Shea2citi

    Don’t forget Duda.

  • Brian Regan

lol, give him a break. H is hitting 300 and has 3 hits today. If we surrounded him with a good line up, he would be even better

  • goorru

    You’re troll hunting.

  • BigAl831

Wait where are my Duda posts?? HUH?

  • MetsLGM

its been a while apple 🙂 haha i like that too

  • no, but if wright strikes out with the bases loaded and 2 out in the 9th inning, Wright stans will say that his 5th inning HR made up for his 9th inning K

  • Metropolitan

Lets see him do it in a clutch situation

  • Super T

Everybody here is rooting for Wright, but 3 HRs in nearly 200 ABs isn’t a lot.

  • MikePiazza3186

Wheeler will do all he can to give that run back

  • WilponsNeed2Go

Shouldn’t you be packing for Las Vegas?

  • MetsLGM

Wheeler is hearing you mets fans calling him a bum so he is taking out his anger on batters lol

  • BigAl831

    You’re butt hunting.

  • I like that Wheeler is pitching inside. Hey, if ya hit a few oh well, maybe they will back off the plate.

  • Arjun Vidudala

wheeler responds to a wonderful drive by Wright bringing the mets within 1 by striking ou-, hitting another batter -_-

  • Brian Regan

We should have a righty up as well.

  • BigAl831

You do realize Wright is 3 for 3 tonight right?

    Or no?

  • Joey D.

Before the season began said the Mets would be fine with Murphy, Wright and Granderson – though Grandy was not suited to be cleanup hitter. That was it. CY was no answer for reasons we all knew. Cannot have three established hitters and a lot of possibilities – for that is what we call too many holes.

  • Metfan9876

    He just struck one out.

  • Arjun Vidudala

after hitting a guy to start the inning >.< I dont hate the guy, just his control has really been off last couple starts

  • Chris H

Look in the mirror for the moron.

  • BigAl831

How is that not clutch? We’re down 2 he hits a home run to get us back within 1. That’s clutch.

  • Super T

    That’s funny.

  • Pedro’s Rooster

It’s great that he hit a home run. Hopefully, he doesn’t go 100 ABs before his next one.

Heck, maybe the next one will even come in one of those late-game situations he routinely disappears in.

  • Metropolitan

    meh

  • BigAl831

OH NO MR UN CLUTCH MAKES A STUPID DIVING PLAY WHEN WE DONT NEED IT!

  • Anthony

    Nice play

  • Joey D.

Wonder why so many come down on David after all he has done for the Mets in his career. Just look at the play he just made now in the muddy infield.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

  • goorru

  • mr. belvedere

Once again…David Wright really sucks huh

  • MetsLGM

Making a living off these kinds of comments eh? Looks like your boy wheeler was about to implode again though yes very nice play

  • Metropolitan

I bet you if someone was on base he does not hit that home run

  • HarveyKsYou

You’re valid on this part. The Wright haters are just ridiculous.

  • goorru

DW, has always had a great glove.

  • Ace719

    Leave wheels for 1 more

  • Waz0787

Wright is playing outstanding today. I am one of biggest critiques.

  • BigAl831

So Wheeler gives up 2 ER in 6 innings.

    BOOOOOOO

  • Metropolitan

yeah he is only up to like 150 pitches

  • Nice inning by Wheeler.. Ok guys pick him up and score a couple! Wheeler deserves a win.. He has pitched well today..

  • WilponsNeed2Go

He still would have gone 3 for 4 for the day with an RBI and a Run scored.

  • 94SupraTT

    Brian, you are dumb, ok?

  • BigAl831

I usually like to try and post smart.

But I’m sorry I’m trying to sound more like your average Mets fan on here today.

  • BigAl831

    No, you ; )

  • MetsLGM

Ok wheeler, im sorry. You did good today for a bum :p

  • MetsLGM

    I wanted a shutout ! Boooo

  • BigAl831

I bet he could beat the crap out of you too.

  • Christopher Hoffa

Adding 2 established batters (one leadoff hitter at SS, one 4 hole hitter in OF) and a bullpen piece or two makes this team a playoff team next year.

    New Addition
    Murphy
    Wright
    New Addition (RF)
    Granderson
    Duda
    d’Arnaud
    Lagares

That’s a very deep and a lineup that would be good enough to support our strong pitching staff next year.

  • Manager of The Year

Remember when everyone was talking sh!t about Wheeler after an inning where he only gave up 2 runs and everyone treated him as a bust? He just went 6 innings giving up only 2 ER. That’s an ERA of 3.00. Not an ace but pretty good. People need to calm down and stop over reacting over a 2 run inning

  • metsfan79

Can’t watch can anyone guve a quick update on juan, wilma, wheeler please

  • why?

Travis is gonna be there for a while while he rehabs his swin..i mean head injury

  • MetsfanInParadise

He got that 8-pitch inning he’s needed all game. He’s settled down. I’d like to see him start the 7th

  • BigAl831

    It’s the same as Beltran.

Won’t be appreciated till he’s gone.

  • Super T

Might be the only way he can win.

  • Chris H

DW doesn’t suck he just needs help in the lineup so he doesn’t try to right the ship by himself which he cannot do

  • Arjun Vidudala

props for keeping us in the game. I didnt have confidence in him till the 4th innning though

  • not if Metropolitan puts a Chase Utley mask on

I understand it’s easy to be negative when you’re a Mets fan.

But there’s a difference between being negative and ridiculous.

  • Anthony

Oh well get him next time big fella

  • MetsLGM

I often tiptoe that line :p

  • Manager of The Year

The same Reyes that has seemed to be injured for the last fee years. Passing up on Reyes was a good move on Sandy’s part as much as we hate to admit it.

Next year? They could fill the spots at 1B & SS during the deadline. RF will be filled by Puello by default.

  • WilponsNeed2Go

How many starts has Recker taken from you? A guess defensive liability is not a term you heard yet.

  • ed charles

How much worse could Dykstra be? At least I am not sick of watching him.

  • Destry

I didn’t realize all HRs are 2 run & 3 run shots and grand slams. Stupid solo HR

Oh look its an old friend in the arizona pen ! lol :p

  • metsfan79

If I had to guess cyoung 0 for 3 with only 2ks

  • HarveyKsYou

Flores you have to hit if you’re going to make mistakes in the field. Luckily, this is the first time it’s happened.

  • Mario Gonzalez

Um and not replacing him with an actual short stop was also a good move?

  • Christopher Hoffa

Sorry, don’t agree. Puello is not the answer. We can’t have a team comprised of all young players. This team truly needs an established POWER hitter, not what Granderson is. Granderson is a great 5 hole hitter, but he will definitely be on the decline. I hate to say it, but we need someone like Abreu/Stanton/Pujols/etc or one tier below them.

  • Joey D.

He’s been wild which is not giving good signs overall. His pitch count is still over 90. He’s given up three runs in six innings. The signs of him being a successful pitcher more than a thrower – and an intelligent pitcher – are not yet being seen more than a glimpse here and there.

  • Anthony

Cy an duder just sucked the air out of citifield

  • So Tired of Watching Duda and Cy.. I just wish the FO & TC could just admit they’re wrong about their puppet Duda and send him down to triple A where he can be the king of the PCL.

  • MetsLGM

I dont get why he cannot tone this earlier and through games, maybe its a mental/jitters type of thing which is odd he has done this quite a bit now. 25 starts to today

You might have missed the subtleties of my work.

  • HarveyKsYou

You’re not a real ace to me unless you consistently give 7-8 innings.

  • goorru

No doubt Terry is gonna throw Flores under the bus after the game.

  • MetsfanInParadise

    Good.

  • MetsLGM

Im glad he is out there, you know what im eating crow now and it tastes good as long as the mets players succeed to prove me wrong

  • BigAl831

    THANK YOU

  • MetsfanInParadise

That’s the kind of win-win situation I don’t mind. You’re either right or the players are successful.

  • konyc

It’s not the two run inning, it’s the 83 pitches through 4. His average pitch count per inning is up from last year’s unsightly 17 to 18 per this year. That’s why he’s averaging 5.5 innings per start, and until he cuts that down, he’s never gonna make it. The last two innings were a nice start in that direction.

  • Andrew Herbst

    Lol. Nice Full House reference.

  • Mario Gonzalez

Disagree with this silly notion that you have to have power at 1B or the OF. I’d rather have contact hitters with gap power that will drive in runs. Tired of people stating we need a power guy. Those guys tend to clog up the base paths and K quite a bit.

  • BarnRat

Maybe Wheeler just needs a half-day warm-up a la Dice

  • Metropolitan

yeah go get em Zack…oh wait

  • Manager of The Year

I’d take Wheeler out after Owings regardless of the result

  • MetsfanInParadise

Wouldn’t it be awesome if this was the game where Wheels finally figures it out? 8 scoreless next time.

“We can’t have a team comprised of all young players”

Why not? The NL West leading Giants have an entire infield of 20-something year old guys.

If I had to go after a power hitting OF, it’s Kemp, but I wanna give the kid Puello a shot first. Like the power, speed and defense he brings to the table. With that said, I agree on them needing a power hitter. Cuddyer will most likely be available during the deadline and would be a lift in the cleanup spot.

  • MetsLGM

I would like that. Though this isnt the first time he has pitched good this season, i need to wait and see can he carry it into his next start or 2-3 starts

  • Metropolitan

    DH tomorrow was used

  • Joey D.

Para got a hit. Now if another does, would one say that is due to him being tired? Or is it that Goldschmidt is also familiarity more.

  • WilponsNeed2Go

    Oh Terry mistake #1

  • BarnRat

He’s been getting stronger and a DH tomorrow

  • Pedro’s Rooster

I’ll assume Goldschmidt hits one off the moon here…..

  • Mario Gonzalez

He has a stone glove. Horrible defensively.

  • BigAl831

Probably would’ve taken him out but if he can get through this inning that would be a great confidence boost for the kid.

  • goorru

No doubt he should walk Goldy.

  • Destry

A DH tomorrow has nothing to do with hurting a young kids arm today. You get to carry an extra pitcher for this exact reason

  • MetsfanInParadise

  • WilponsNeed2Go

Edgin should not even be pitching at the Major League level, any use of him is an automatic mistake.

  • Frank Francisco

Nice job by Wheeler to get a great start out of a rocky start.

  • QueensRussell

Dunno about the rest of you, but I’d prefer some boring walks over the aggressive first pitch pop ups to make life easy for the Dback pitcher!

  • mr. belvedere

Wheels needs to watch the film from the 6th and 7th innings today on how he should always pitch…you don’t need to throw 100% every pitch early…save that 96-97 mph fastball for key spots

  • MetsLGM

Hope wheeler can use this as a boost into a next start. Gotta go but LGM get him a run or two !

Ala Wheeler absolutely turning his day around and making adjustments like a young 23 year old kid should do.

  • BCleveland3381

Murphy does this. I kept saying when everyone was talking about extending him to wait until he hits his brutal stretch, which we’re now right in the middle of. Murphy is a .285 hitter when it’s all said and done. He was bound to go completely cold like he always does.

  • Anthony

    I need a hug

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

    What an original reply.

  • donobrien

    Made your day, eh Metropolitan.

  • BigAl831

Flores needs to learn how to charge the ball.

  • Metfan9876

Let’s hope Herrera turns into a stud. We can slot him at second and trade Murphy away in a package for a shortstop or outfielder.

  • Metropolitan

    Murph is a knucklehead

  • WilponsNeed2Go

2B 285 hitter is actually above average for that position. Murph biggest knock is his defense.

  • Charley’s Twin

It’s hard being a Mets fan.

  • BCleveland3381

Im not even saying I wouldn’t extend him. Im just saying it’s not all great with Murphy. He’s real streaky.

  • 2rings

problem is, that he, murphy and Campbell are all third basemen as their best position

  • EzRider

And throw. Everything he throws is low.

  • Charley’s Twin

you can’t “slot someone in” who’s in A ball, no matter how well they’re playing.

  • Frank Francisco

This is what Murphy does which has always limited him from reaching the next level. He will be one of the best hitting 2B in the game for a couple weeks but then he goes ice cold. I love him during the hot streaks but his cold streaks are maddening.

I just wish he was more consistent.

  • Metfan9876

I would extend him, but if Herrera keeps things up in AA, we may be able to make him expendable.

  • Joey D.

    Hi BC,

He is a good, clutch hitter, despite this. His figures from last season would even show that with runners on base, with them in scoring position and with two outs, he was a .300 hitter. Which means he would not come through 7 out of ten times like any other top hitter.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

You know Herrera is some 2 years away, right?

  • Andrew Herbst

Murph is too streaky to bat third.

  • Metfan9876

Obviously. But if he keeps up his pace in AA, they can extend Murphy for two years until they wait for him if they think he’s the real deal.

  • Metropolitan

and lets not forget he is prone to the mental mistake

  • Metfan9876

Obviously. But if he keeps up his pace in AA, they can extend Murphy for
two years until they wait for him if they think he’s the real deal..

  • EzRider

As huge Murph fan i completely agree and while as much as i’d like to see him bat third he never will.

  • BigAl831

    I want him 5th.

  • Manager of The Year

Very true but so is Wright

  • Andrew Herbst

    That could work.

  • BigAl831

Not nearly as cold when he’s cold.

Murph goes from an all-star to an automatic out.

  • Andrew Herbst

Yeah, but Wright isn’t as streaky as Murph.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

You can do that, or you can sell high on Murphy for a SS, move Flores over to 2B and close up the gap in the middle infield NOW.

  • Kevin H

I think Murph would say FU I’ll just wait one more season until free agency if the Mets offered him a 2 year extension.

  • EzRider

I’d still give Murph a 3 year deal.

  • Joey D.

    Hi donobrien,

Since you and I are both some of the elder statesmen of this group, I think we can remember times when even in their prime, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle didn’t come through in the clutch.

And who made the final out of the 1978 playoffs for the Red Sox? Carl Yaztresmski.

  • Charley’s Twin

too bad the Wilpons won’t. Stand by for the salary dump.

  • 2rings

and the bigger picture is that we all expect Murph to come through every time, because outside of him and DW( and this year JL) their lineup is littered with has beens and never wases

  • Chris H

If only EY could have stole 3rd and home hmmmmmm

  • Ace719

Why can’t we just sign Morales?

  • Metfan9876

Personally, I’m not a fan of that option. Herrera can provide much better defense, assuming his offense can hold up in the big leagues. However, Flores as a stopgap is a good option for now.

  • Joey D.

    You got that right, Charley.

  • BigAl831

How about Lagares, Duda, Wright, Granderson, Murph, Flores, d’arnaud, CY

    It’s different but why not

  • Metfan9876

Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see what happens.

  • WilponsNeed2Go

The only likely scenario for not extending Murph, is if the Mets line up a SS via trade or free agency, and Flores hits >285 for the season. Then you can shift Flores over to 2B and make a better team.

  • 2rings

    come on

  • Chris H

3 pitches 3 out and on to the 9th

  • Andrew Herbst

That’s an interesting lineup. I like it.

  • BigAl831

Shift seems to have gotten David a lot. He’s become pretty pull heavy on ground balls.

  • Andrew Herbst

Exactly. When Murph slumps, it puts more pressure on DW and Lagares.

  • BigAl831

I would just rather have Murph and Flores in more RBI spots.

And Duda can be his silly patient self in the 2 hole.

  • EzRider

Do we always need to state the obvious?

But none the less i do so love being stuck in perpetual “Re-build Mode”.

  • 2rings

ok, we will take it..lets make them pay for it, they way the Mets are made to pay for it

  • Chris H

How sb’s does Grandy have. He’s got to steal

  • Joey D.

  • BigAl831

Don’t see why you don’t PH Abreu here.

  • Andrew Herbst

Yep. Agreed. Duda’s not an RBI guy. Murph and Flores are better in those kind of spots.

Man. For an “RBI machine,” Flores has shown a distinctive inability to drive in runs.

  • Chris H

What are the mets ranked with runners left on base? Cause it seems every game the numbers are crazy

  • mr. belvedere

    horrible AB by Flores there

  • Kevin H

He tore it up in 2011 when they brought him up mid-season. I remember seeing some offesive combo stat where the only rookies to do better in history were Pujols and Bagwell. Clearly things have not worked out well since but he did have promise.

  • BigAl831

Better see Abreu and Campbell lead off next inning.

  • Super T

It was enough for the FO to evaluate – for his contract he was.

  • Charley’s Twin

And now for your daily dose of aggravation, Scott Rice is here.

  • BCleveland3381

Ive said it time and time again, Lucas Duda is completely useless. He’s been in the league for 4 years and hasn’t gotten better whatsoever. One excuse after another has been made for him by some fans and now he’s got the everyday job at his most comfortable position, and he’s doing nothing with it. I’ve seen more than enough of Lucas Duda to know what he is as a player. And it’s nothing that should impress anyone.

  • Chris H

Due up in the ninth. Teufel leading off followed by Geren and then finally Goodwen

  • Joanie Yan

I’m sure the Rangers will sign him to replace Fielder.

  • MAS0031

And take Dave Hudgens with him.

  • Name

    “So many chances…” -Keith Hernandez
Unfortunately, this can be said about PRETTY MUCH EVERY GAME PLAYED THIS SEASON. Terry really needs to arrange this lineup better. RBI hitters need to go in RBI spots while guys who can’t hit with men on base (I am looking in Duda’s direction when I say this) need to go in non-RBI spots. That is how you win games.

  • Charley’s Twin

Now they’re talking about Ike on fox and how getting out of NY was the best thing that ever happened to him.

  • HarveyKsYou

Flores hasn’t made any difference to this offense.

  • Joey D.

The Mets can put on a commercial like W.B Mason – nothing can get a team down more than running out of hitting. We then see TC holding his lineup card over his head singing “nooooooo”.

  • Selltheteam06

    false

  • Frank Francisco

For all the sh*t Ike Davis got, Lucas Duda has been just as bad all along… Whatever genius decided Lucas Duda would be “way better than Ike” was a clown.

    Ike Davis (2012 – 2014): .226/.324/414 .737 OPS
    Lucas Duda (2012 – 2014): .234/.337/.401 .738 OPS

They both suck but at least Ike Davis had a high ceiling, a 32 HR season, and played plus-defense. Duda is just worthless.

But Ike was more expensive so he got the boot. Now he’s hitting to an .811 OPS in Pittsburgh.

    #TeamIke

  • Joanie Yan

It’s going to get worse before it’ll get better, but if it rids us of Terry Collins and Sandy Alderson it’ll be worth it.

Duda is the prime example of how BPO ruins a good hitter

2011 Duda didnt walk a ton nor did he strike out a ton but he hit WELL and was dangerous.

2012-2014 Duda looks for walks all day and strikes out like a fat man in a lesbian bar and is an easy out.

    BPO!!!!

    THANKS SANDY!

Just shows that one cannot simply say we have the youth and once they come up we’re going to be back contending (as Sandy and the organization was trying to sell). It takes time for kids to develop and thus that is why one needs a balanced infusion of players – which this team does not have the money to fill holes from outside the organization.

We all keep talking about making trades and signing people this season or offseason. This is exactly what the Wilpons and Sandy want, and then as the off season drags on and the payroll becomes 75 million and still nothing has happened we will all be mad for a bit and then start talking about 2016 and on and on and on.

  • Selltheteam06

Sad to think that the next thing of any relevance whatsoever for this team is them “unloading” murphy

Not necessarily. The A’s and Rays win with smaller payrolls. They just spend wisely, develop players and make smart trades.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

The SS situation can be cleared up at the deadline if they choose to do so.

  • Joey D.

    Hi Charley,

I’ve been thinking about that. The only reason the Wilpons are still around is because of Sandy’s ability to downside the operating budget throughout the entire organization to that of a shoestring, as we know. It takes talent and the “balls” to do that when it means the product of the team to suffer.

If Sandy is no longer GM, the next one might not be so good in that area so it might lead to the Wilpons having to sell.

Hey, it’ far fetched but these are desperate times.

  • mr1313

Jay is an assclown I hate his schtick. Does anyone really like that tool?

  • Charley’s Twin

You’re right that teams can win with a low payroll, but the problem is Jeff Wilpon thinks he’s the GM, and has the power to act as such. We have no hope with him around. Go back and read what Doubleday said about JW in 2003.

“Mr. Jeff Wilpon has decided that he’s going to learn how to run a baseball team and take over at the end of the year,” Doubleday told the newspaper. “Run for the hills, boys. I think probably all those baseball people will bail.”

  • Charley’s Twin

I’m actually optimistic about the future, because i believe we are in our final year of the Wilpon tyranny. If I’m wrong, however, then in my opinion all hope is lost.

  • Bail4Nails

If people had listened to most of us BEFORE the Season started, Flores would’ve been in a groove by now. He clearly beat out Ruben Sh*tada in ST, but still sat on the bench when he got here. Imagine how this Game would’ve gone with Campbell and Flores batting after Grandy. The Mets would’ve Won. Unfortunately, we have the WORST management in Baseball.

  • Frank Francisco

At least they’re trying something new at SS for now, so for the time being I’m not complaining.

  • Frank Francisco

Actually, could’ve been cleared-up up until about a week ago if they chose to do so.

  • Joey D.

    Hi Charley,

I also feel that both Oakland and Tampa Bay are a little bit more flexible with going a bit over budget, even if that budget is a very low payroll.

If they had LaTroy Hawkins, I don’t think they would have told him to take a hike because they did not want to pay him $2.5 million – not an outrageous price at all for one of his talent despite his age.

  • Frank Francisco

Did he really just say that…?

  • Charley’s Twin

Absolutely, Joey. to hear the Mets tell it, they got outbid by Tampa for Balfour, someone we clearly could use. Pathetic!

  • Mario Gonzalez

Yes that’s true but they have competent front offices and excellent coaching staffs.

  • Charley’s Twin

  • Joanie Yan

That was my point. Collins and Alderson need to go.

  • Joey D.

    Hi Charley,

As I’ve written and Joe D. has mentioned, the Wilpons are here for the immediate future.

They are staying because of the profits to be made way beyond the Mets and so if it means operating the Mets as a dollar store and they can break even (which they did last year with Forbes reporting them finishing up with a $1.6 million operating surplus) then Sandy has done his job – which was not to fist put together a competitor but to do that second and on a limited budget which usually doesn’t yield success.

  • metsfan79

Damn mets spend a few bucks sign k.morales. At leasy we will have a pro hitter at first

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

With who? Please don’t say Drew.

  • Mario Gonzalez

Best thing to happen to him was to get away from this so-called “hitting” philosophy.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Even if you do sign Morales, you would have to give him a couple weeks at minimum for him to be ML ready after a long layoff.

  • Joanie Yan

Do you really think Jeff Wilpon was the one who decided to give C Young 7.5 mil? He probably never even heard of him before this year.

  • Charley’s Twin

    Hi Joey,
I work in the financial industry. It’s impossible to say for sure how the WIlpon situation will turn out, but I can tell you with confidence that I would not trust Forbes’ operating profit numbers. Forbes is a little Wikipedia-ish, if you get my drift.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to tell what the real number is without public financial statements. The segment that the Wilpons must make public (due to bonds issued to finance Citi Field’s construction) continues to show a loss. It doesn’t automatically mean they made an overall loss, but count me skeptical.

  • Name

But I hear he’s worse with the glove than Duda. He’s better suited as a DH.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Maybe SNY is also tired of hearing the BS that comes out of Collins’s mouth.

  • Bail4Nails

Most of our team isn’t ML ready.

  • Charley’s Twin

I have been told by people who would know that Jeff Wilpon is much more deeply involved than most people would expect, and not for the better.

If you don’t believe an anonymous message board poster, which I fully understand, consider that Peter Gammons said “Jeff Wilpon is the real GM of the Mets” back in 2009. Also, wouldn’t Nelson Doubleday know what he’s talking about?

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Nah, just vets like Chris Young clogging the lineup.

  • Charley’s Twin

Drew was one of many options. I am not rehashing MLB Trade Rumors archives here.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

There were no real options via FA that would’ve helped us, something I have rehashed since the beginning of last offseason. Of course, they could’ve went the trade route, but for some reason, chose not to.

  • Hitmanᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ✔

Last 2 years, his defensive WAR at 1B is -1.2 and -1.5, so you’d be correct.

  • Name

Duda’s a good hitter without men on base. Murphy and Flores hit well when men are on base (in Flores’s case, his minor league numbers show that). They need to be placed in spots that can produce the best out of them, which means Duda should not be in an RBI spot and Murphy and Flores should not be hitting second and seventh.

  • Ike –

    .293 with 2 HR’s 10 RBI’s

    Lucas – not so much

  • Shea2citi

    I’d like that as well.

  • Joey D.

    Hi Charlie,

Yes, I’ve been told that by a few and even Forbes admits it is estimated based on what is only made public by the franchises and what they can calculate from other public records (loan information, bond information, etc) through their own investigations.

The majority of their bulk holdings are private and as you said it therefore makes it impossible to really know the truth behind matters. But that is why even with my very uneducated understanding of corporate finance – especially compared to you who works in the industry – I also mention to others that one cannot go by the operating numbers to make sense of a franchise’s true profit making for if one used that as a barometer, then the Yankees would be a losing proposition – Forbes had them at an operating deficit of -$19 million.

But that is why I’ve also researched and posted information regarding the money being made by all teams outside of baseball related ventures and thus suggest that because of those Sterling Mets might very well be able to make ends meet on their own. Sandy has already said revenue from other sources had already been accounted for and thus could not go to the roster payroll. So that is why Sandy maintaining such a shoestring operating budget which affects all of baseball operations is of such necessity. The Wilpons have already sold as much minority shares as they could so from my own limited perspective since they have already re-financed their loans, their last resort would be the infusion of the Wilpons’ other fiscal sources to keep things going (which we saw once MLB refused them any more loans in 2011).

I believe nobody risks the use of other business or even private money unless there is no other recourse. And that real estate deal is just too valuable to loose – even though I assume most of it is tied up with Sterling Equities rather than Sterling Mets.

In general, do you think I have a valid “general” theory as to what may be going on behind the scenes?

  • Charley’s Twin

Sure. What you’re saying is plausible. And books can be cooked to understate profits rather than overstate them (any motive to do so is typically nefarious).

I base my theory on the Wilpons being forced out upon the massive debt burden the team has, and their annual need to refinance this debt. WIthout boring you too much, in the junk bond market, conditions have been incredibly acommodating for borrowers such as the Wilpons lately. But Wall Street works in cycles, and an unscripted bad event in the markets could change the attitude of the banks who have been so friendly to the Wilpons in recent years. If they can’t refinance next year’s debt load, they are done. I’m hopeful.

  • Joey D.

    Hi Charley,

Yup, what you say about future re-financing I figure is what will determine whether or not there will be a Sterling Mets in our lives.

Obviously you understand the ramifications way better than I do and so I hope what you say comes to pass, however, do you think their investment in that Willets Points Development will be a factor in their ability to secure further re-financing? Again, understand there is the possibility of that entire district becoming a financial flop as well with unoccupied spaces and limited use of the hotel and convention facilities. Right now it doesn’t seem so with the New York tourism industry booming but we don’t know if this particular facility will be of any benefit to it.

  • Charley’s Twin

ahh Joanie where did you go? I was curious to hear what you have to say to my last comment.

  • Charley’s Twin

    Joey,
I might have some more ‘textbook’ knowledge of the situation, but i can’t deny I’m thinking with my heart a little bit. After all, I’m a Mets fan first, and an employee second 😉

As for Willets point, I’m not fully up on the details of the project. How far away are we from the presumed opening? It would probably take a while after the debut to have a clear idea as to the project’s success. Under my theory/analysis/fantasy, they will be long gone by the time we find out.

  • Destry

That’s like me saying we’ve played 25 games at home. If you remove those 25 games, they’re the highest scoring team in the NL. It’s true, but you can’t just remove stuff that actually happened. Do the games that the Rockies play at home count?

  • Joanie Yan

Sure I believe that Jeff Wilpon is involved to a certain point, especially on the major moves. For example he was the one that told Alderson to give Granderson 4 years as opposed to 3. But again I can’t believe he is involved in every transaction – don’t think Sandy would stand for it.

  • Charley’s Twin

There’s so much more than player transactions that he ruins. Just ask the GM of the Norfolk Tides.

  • Super T

You’re not portraying an accurate picture by saying the team’s problem is the pitching and just pointing at “5th in the NL in runs scored per game. 11th in NL in team ERA” as a means to backup your claim.

That’s like me saying Jacob degrom is the best hitter on the team and just pointing to his team high 1.333 OPS as proof.

Just like last night’s game – it’s pretty obvious to most everyone that the team’s biggest problem is the offense, and just because they scored a bunch of runs at a few hitters parks they played at earlier (to put them 5th in the NL in runs scored) doesn’t mean that isn’t true.

  • Joanie Yan

That I’ll believe. I’ll also throw in the mess with WFAN and the radio contract and the “true New Yorker campaign”.

  • Super T

The Mets have the 4th most quality starts in the majors, but yet they have the 6th worst record. How can that be – “When their pitching is their biggest problem?”
