Wright is Swinging Away and Hopes to be Ready for Season Opener

Updated on 3/23 by Joe D.

This afternoon at the Mets complex at Port. St. Lucie, David Wright took another big step forward in his recovery from a strained left intercostal muscle that has shut him down for two weeks.

The newly appointed captain of the Mets took some swings off a tee in the cage this morning for the first time since being sidelined. This comes a day after Wright did some running, fielding and tossing.

Wright said that he felt no pain during or after his batting session and still hopes to be ready for Opening Day.

However, Mets general manager Sandy Alderson told Newsday’s Marc Carig that he remains cautiously optimistic about Wright’s progress.

“I’m glad it’s a goal,” Alderson aid. “Is it realistic? Yeah, I think it’s realistic. I don’t think there’s any certainty, but it’s realistic.”

Stop being such a Debbie Downer, Sandy…

It’s starting to look more and more like Daniel Murphy will begin the 2013 season on the disabled list. Terry Collins had recently stated that if Murphy didn’t play in a major league level tune-up by this coming weekend, that he didn’t think he would be ready for the Opening Day. There is virtually no chance of Murphy playing in Saturday’s preseason game, which is making it really start to sink in that the Mets will be without their starting second baseman when the season kicks off.

The good news is, his disabled list stint can be retroactive, and he may only miss the first five games of the season. The better news is that Jordany Valdespin has more than filled the void while Murphy has been battling his injury, and should be able to hold down the second base duties for as long as Murphy may be on the disabled list.

Some more good news was that David Wright, the newly named Mets captain, was throwing, running, and fielding grounders today. Adam Rubin of ESPN reported that Terry Collins said “all good signs so far” regarding Wright’s recovery from intercostals injury.

Starting the 2013 campaign with half of the infield on the disabled list was not what the Mets or the fan base had in mind. The infield was supposed to be the foundation of the offense, and if both Wright and Murphy land on the disabled list, it will put even more pressure on the unproven Mets outfield to perform. As stated earlier, the great news is that Valdespin has been playing absolutely fantastic baseball this spring, so that can help bridge any time frame where Murphy may be out of the lineup. But if the Mets lose both Wright and Murphy, this Mets team will have to dig deep and get some offense from the other positions.

  • Sucks to see Murph so slow to get back. Good to hear today’s news about Wright at least plus it looks like Turner’s ankle has healed a lot quicker as well. Marcum is scheduled to pitch this week and barring a setback he should make it North with the team. Waiting to see what is up with Santana though. I read where he is even behind in his long toss program.

  • Murph already feels like he’s good to go for Opening Day, but Collins wants to go slow.

    • Probably better off to just take it slow and lose him for 5 days…it’s if Wright and Murph start on the DL where it could get tricky.

      • I just want them both back in time for Opening Day. I really don’t want any part of Justin Turner being a starting anything.

      • Both could miss the first 6 games before we actually need thier offense….

We play a 3 game vs SD and then another vs Miami!

And thats over the course of the first week so it’s really 7 days of the season before we need them back to take on the Phillies…

        • True but have you seen things on the Phillies side? They’re worried as hell about Halladay. He still can’t hit beyond the mid-high 80s with his stuff. Only sure thing I see in that rotation right now is Hamels, but keep an eye on Lannan. I can see him surprising some people this year.

          • Yeah but they got Howard and Lee still right?

Chances are we face the back of thier rotation anyway but we still have to put up some offense or we can’t win…And even a half a Halladay is still better than one Hefner! LOL

            • I’m actually not so sure about Lee. For all we know, it could a reversal of fortune for him at the start of this season from last season. The offense supports him, but he falters. Howard looks his old self, so no argument there. Dom Brown may break out as well, which can’t come at a better time, because this is make or break time for him this season. Still remember the first time the Mets faced him when he came up and I think it was Ron Darling who compared him to a young Darryl Strawberry.

            • Lee is still a stud. Horrible luck last year, but he pitched better (based on the numbers) than guys that finished high in the cy young voting. It was like a year with Johan when he pitched great, and hardly got any wins.

Howard does seem to be reborn, and Brown has had a breakout spring (both sides of the ball). But, as with any young guy, will it carry over? And can they both stay healthy?

  • Often injured and slow to heal, enough of Murphy.

  • We will be better off when Daniel Murphy is no longer a starter on this team.

    • The Murphy hate is simply illogical. The guy is a career .290 hitter and plays a passable 2B.

He’s one of the last things we should be worrying about…

      • Yeah I don’t get it either, he’s a damn solid above average player who always plays hard.

        • Not sure how that is qualified as “hate”. To elaborate, I don’t like his glove or lack of power.

          • Let’s see how much power you could generate coming off two knee surgeries in two years.

          • It may not be hate but it sure is silly to place any focus on him. Murphy will never be elite but he’s been pretty damn solid and could start at 3rd or 2nd on a lot of teams. Even without hitting being able to hit a lot of homeruns he does generate enough line drives to rack up doubles and make up some ground which combined with an above average hit rate makes him a nice piece

    • This team last year would have not have won the number of games without Murphy. His 40 2base & third with hits. We will not better better with out him as a starter. He is an asset to tis team. You must be a Murphy hater.

  • that is one long recovery from a muscle tweak. Wonder if we find out at some point that there was something more significant not diagnosed correctly?

  • Now with another Spring Training game under the belt. I’m not just counting down how many days to go till the season begins but also crossing off ever day the Mets can go without some new injury.

    • Thinking the same thing myself. Almost wary of checking daily to see who might be hurt next.

Hoping Wright and Murph are ready to go. Spin could play second but I’d rather have both hks and Murph’ bat in the lineup to start the season.

Crossing my fingers on Gee as well.

  • Hi Mitch,

You know, before I saw that picture of Jason Bay with his cap off I never knew he was balding! :)

  • Duda goes YARD!

  • D’Arnaud has no business in Las Vegas … he should be heading north.

    • With the way he’s hitting, this extra year thing is looking more and more ridiculous.

      • it almost works the other way. The better he is doing and the more he looks like a future star, the more incentive to lock up the extra control years, because you are likely to want them and they are going to be way more expensive.

Now, if you could honestly say this team was 1 bat and a C away from being a legit playoff team this year, it could be a different argument about the cost/benefit ratio.

        • van, I agree.

Matt we should do an MMO Crossfire on pro vs con on d’Arnaud making the team.

        • It’s 5 weeks, right for the extra year of control?

          • the dates get confusing, but I think the 4/20 date is the extra year of control, and 6/15 is to avoid super-2 status.

            • 6/15 is an estimate. They have truly no idea since it is based upon a percentage of player eligible.

But as for the extra year, it is sometime end of April (3 weeks or so) that would qualify him.

          • I can’t see starting D’Arnaud on the ML squad when 3 short weeks in the minors gives another year of control.

Super 2 status is another discussion, however.

  • Another game scratched off the list and fingers crossed that it will be another day with no new injuries to report. Some good signs from Wright so far at least as we inch closer to Opening Day.
