Valdespin Uninjured, Suffered From Leg Cramps

Jordany Valdespin

Following up on what I reported earlier this morning, Jordany Valdespin is uninjured and was suffering from  cramps after an 18-inning Caribbean Series game yesterday in cold weather, according to ESPN Deporte’s Enrique Rojas. Good news.

Original Post 9:00 AM.

I was just notified by one of my writers that Mets outfielder Jordany Valdespin hurt himself swinging in the Caribbean Series.

Spin decided to stay in the game to complete his at-bat and grounded out. But he hurt himself further by running it out to first base and had to be helped off the field.

Valdespin was having a solid season in Winter Ball for Licey in the DR, batting .280 with a .402 on-base in 93 at-bats with three homers and 16 runs scored.

I’ll have more on this as I try to get more information on the severity of the injury.

  • Hamstring…

  • Well, that sucks. :(

  • He played 17 innings of an 18 inning championship game last night that saw Mexico pull out the win. He has had a great postseason for the Dominican Republic hopefully it’s not too serious.

  • Well lets hope it’s just cramps.

    • Information is sketchy but if I had to guess (hurt swinging) I’d say oblique type injury.

  • Maybe if he spent more time training and less time posting a ridiculous amount of pictures of himself on twitter he might not be injured! LOL I know that probably didn’t have much to do with it, but ever since he posted that one of himself with the Marlins hat on, I couldn’t care less if he sniffs the Major Leagues again!

    • SMH…. Your name gave away what you are and the reason you’re saying this.. Comments like the one you made is the reason i wish to be a moderator for a week…

      • I actually agree here that when a player is injured there is no reason to bring up the past no matter how sketchy it is.

      • My name gave what away exactly? Look, I’m not one to hate on any of the Mets players period, but this kid’s attitude just rubs me (and I’m not alone in this) the wrong way. While it’s true it’s probably not the right time to post that comment and I apologize, it still doesn’t change the way I feel about this particular player.

      • It’s okay for Wheeler to post a picture of his BBQ pulled pork sandwich, but if Valdy posts a picture of chicken and rice it just freaks some people out.

        • You actually pay attention when people post their lunch? Not me, not sure why people do that , strange I think.

      • Ben, go ahead and attack him for doing what he did with the hat, i thought it was a little childish, but again, sometimes you wear clothes to match the outfit you’re wearing.. simple as that. but to come out in an article about him getting injured was my problem with your comment. your opinions are just that, opinions, but sometimes you gotta know when to make them.

        • Agreed, having thought about it for a bit, it was in poor taste, and again I do apologize for that!

        • I will add this though! When you play for and are getting paid by the Mets to wear their uniform, and their hat I don’t care if you have a 3 piece suit in Marlins colors, but you shouldn’t be wearing a hat with a Marlins logo on it period! Never mind his employer for a second, what does that say to his teammates about his loyalty? Poor judgement to be sure!

          • thats a cultural thing.

You have to understand you are dealing with people that are not from this country and DONT KNOW they are even offending their patrons.

Why would Valdespin PURPOSELY try to tick off met fans?

            obviously it was a misunderstanding.

But when met fans dont like u…they are like angry bitter ex-wives that hang on to every single thing you said that could be misconstrued as an insult…

            • “But when met fans dont like u…they are like angry bitter ex-wives (husbands) that hang on to every single thing you said that could be misconstrued as an insult…”

              Ain’t that the truth, hahahahaa

            • we are talking about the core and Sandy now, right?

      • Alex68, Are you still hung up on protecting Dominican players? But is it still OK for you to bash USA born players? What’s up with your selective sensitivity? SMH

        • FairTreat. i don’t defend dominican players, i treat everyone the same, i don’t give a f*** if you’re black, white, yellow, red, we are here to judge a player based on baseball, not what his lifestyle is. had not been for twitter maybe noone would’ve notice.
This is no different than when kobe bryant wore a bill russell jersey.. Please…

          • But the question remains, why post it on Twitter. Either your naive or you want attention.

            • Do you think Valdespin while vacationing back in DR, getting ready to hit the town…was intentionally trying to tick off Met fans ?

              like i said..it is a cultural thing….

and thats not just in DR, thats here too…kids started wearing hats as fashion statements back in the early 90′s over 20 years ago…

Jordany lives in DR…is 25….and all those kids grew up with that as a culture when kids from the DR moved back and forth to the US and brought back some habits kids have here

he ( and a whole generation of kids ) is so far removed from how old school baseball fans think in the states.

If met fans cant comprehend that, they are being willfully ignorant

          • TRS, twitter is a loaded gun, and anytime that loaded gun can go off. this is no different than celebrities and athelets saying dumb things on twitter.. he posted a picture and prob didn’t even realize he was wearing that hat

            • Alex, you are taking the naive route and I guess I am taking the desperate for attention route. No idea which one of us is correct.

            • Please! Since when has Mr. Look at ME Valdespin not known what he looked like? He knew he had the dang hat on! You don’t get dressed up to pose and post a picture on Twitter and not know what you are wearing!

              • LOL, good point.

      • What makes you so deserving of being a mod when you have a difficult time composing yourself?

        • What makes you so deserving of being a mod when you have a difficult time composing yourself?”

Well, if jesseP who is the worst of the worst in here got to be mod, i am sure everyone else deserves a chance… And lucky for you i am not the mod, because you’d be one of the first one i’d ban for being a snitch….

          • And there you go proving just why you will NEVER be a mod by talking down about another writer/poster. Unless Joe D has a mental breakdown and want to lose all his sponsors, trust me, I ain’t worrying about you being a mod.

    • How did you feel about Harvey in a Red Sox cap? Or that Wheeler leads the Mets in useless “lok at how cool I am” tweets? What an ignorant comment.

      • To be honest with you Roxio, I haven’t seen Harvey wearing any cap other then the Mets. And I actually follow Wheeler, and have yet to see him post anything remotely like that, though I’ll admit I didn’t start following him until we traded for him so before that I don’t know.

        • The thing about the hat with Valdespin struck a nerve with Met fans because it reminded us of the whole Reyes thing … it was like a nightmarish flashback a little too soon after the fact.

          • It wasn’t just that, though. It was the hat of a division rival. If he had worn an Angels cap, it would still have been weird, but not as offensive as wearing a Marlins cap.

And when was a Met ever pictured with a Red Sox cap on???? I’ve never seen that.

            • Exactly, a division rival!

              • Don’t worry, Ben. What you said didn’t warrant some of the replies you got back. There are some here who are a little over-sensitive and who routinely over-react.

As for you name giving you away? Maybe he is referring to Ben, as in Ben Franklin, and he owned slaves. So maybe he thought your post was a little colonialist in tone. Who knows?

Does anyone remember when Pettitte’s son wore a Mets cap into the Yankees’ spring training camp? It turned out that was the cap of his little league team, but it looks just like the MLB Mets cap. Well the Yankees got all bent out of shape, and Cashman even told Pettitte to make sure his son didn’t do that again! So, hey, if the Yankees brass can get their panties in a bunch over the son innocently wearing a Mets cap, it’s understandable Mets fans didn’t like Jordany wearing a Marlins cap.

                • Listen kid, i suggest you don’t try to speak for me. i made my case as to why i said what i said to him and explain the reasons.. move on kid, i don’t engage to you try to be respectful to others ok

                  • I am NOT speaking for you. I’m joking about that oddball comment you made about his name, which you’ve never explained.

And I am NOT speaking to you either. I addressed my post to Ben. If anyone needs to move on, it’s you.

                    • LOL, He’s got a point Alex68!

                    • alex. Its a trap by a bully to try to get you banned. He won’t be banned regardless of how inflammatory he is. you know. Keep away from the bully. He’s a shill and on the Liarson payroll. He is proof of whoat a lousy GM is. Hiring clowns like metro prove his failing as a Gm trying to overwhelm boards with garbage posts to try to convince a couple fans he’s not a failure. They all fail.

                  • Just giving you heads up kid, i don’t reply to you nor comment on your garbage ass comments. don’t reply to me nor talk about me. i don’t do it to you so keep your distance from my posts.

                    • Practice what you preach. I don’t reply to your “garbage ass” comments. So don’t bother replying to my comments. And I’ll talk about whomever I want. If you don’t like it, tough.

  • I’m not sure where you got Spin’s numbers but that doesn’t match up with Lidom’s regular season numbers for Spin.

    http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Flidom.digisport.com.do%2FEstadisticas%2FEstadisticasPersona%2FEstadisticasPersona%3F__idPersona%3D115&act=url

I’ve been following Spin during the Round Robin of the LIDOM playoffs forward and that is where he has really been impressive. He hit safely in all 17 games (They cancelled the 18th game) of the Round Robin and in all 4 games of the LIDOM championship he played in giving him a 21 game hitting streak where he hit .424/BA in that span. That then combined with the 7 games of the Caribbean series saw him hit over his last 28 games .375/BA. His last 2 games were probably his worst 2 game stretch though that saw him go 2 for 8.

  • Talk about throwing a monkey wrench into things. I was hoping Valdy would win an OF spot out of Spring Training. I hope that this isn’t something that will prolong him for a certain period of time.

  • Spin most likely was heading to Vegas anyway. For whatever reason, he lives in Collins’ doghouse. I dont see him making it out of ST with the big league club. Too bad, most athletic guy they have.

    • Yes, and that’s more of a reason why Collins will be on a short leash. When Valdy was hot, he was still benched for no good reason. What gives? If it was up to me, if Valdy lit it up in ST, he’d be starting in LF. He may have some growing pains, but I trust him defensively a lot more than Duda, plus I would want his speed in the lineup. If he would learn to be more disciplined, he’d be an ideal #2 hitter.

      • Maybe the good reason is that he is not disciplined as you just noted. That’s always been the rap on Spin, a lot of talent but very immature.

      • VSpin as a starter:

        .254 .288 .373 .661 with 24 K’s and 5 walks in 135 PA.

        • .178/.238/.267/.504 in 104 PA.

What if I told you that was Shane Victorino’s slash line his first two years in the big leagues?

Too small of a sample size to make judgment of what Valdespin can be. Personally, if he gets more disciplined at the plate, I see him blossoming into a Victorino type player.

          • I didn’t say it was an adequate sample to determine his worth. Only saying that his numbers starting compared to coming of the bench had a large disparity and that could be the reason that he wasn’t starting last year.

            • Again, wouldn’t that “large disparity” mostly be attributed to the fact that Collins refused to play the hot hand with Valdespin? I still want to see what he can do everyday.

              • I am not sure Hitman. All I know is that he struggled as a starter and not as a bench player.

        • And What’s your point?????????????????????? Would you rather have one of the PO’ss that sandy brought in???

          Cowgill as a Starter: 269 330 331 661 with 45 K’s and 2 HR in 175 PA

          • WAY too soon to grade Cowgill a “POS”.

          • Yes, in deed I would rather have a true CF in CF such as Kirk, DD or Cowgill instead of a converted IF. You got me, dang-it.

          • Cowgill, 26 year old baseball player who can’t hit for power or avg, has no speed to speak of, his defense is mediocre at best, and already the team that drafted him traded to another team who ended up trading him to us.. Yeah, no, it’s too soon to call him a PO’s…

            • Well obviously there was something there in 2011 in his last full year in AAA.
.354 .430 .554 .984 with 13 HR and 30 steals along with scout reported great defense.

However, the question is what happened in 2012 and will he be able to translate any of that to MLB production? No idea.

Personally, I have a hard time calling anyone that I haven’t even seen play a POS.

            • So while you’re defending a 25 year old through 94 games who hasn’t made the impact I hope he will, you’re dubbing a guy who’s played less games in the majors, just a year older, and like Valdy, hasn’t gotten a real shot of seeing what he can do on a everyday basis a “POS”?

              Selective, aren’t we?

              • Well obviously, Alderson brought him in on the cheap. He’s a POS.

                • Well obviously, Alderson brought him in on the cheap. He’s a POS”

Ahhh, of course. isn’t that the same you guys do with wheeler and d’arnaud? Pegging them to be HOF already and that haven’t set one foot in the majors? But of course, that’s how your agenda works right. defend alderson at all cost no matter what!

                  • I haven’t pegged them HOF at all. My like or dislike of Wheeler and TDA, unlike you, has nothing to do with who brought them in. If you remember I am pretty high on a lot of guys who were already here. Wheeler and TDA are regarded as two of the top prospects in the minors and are viewed as MLB ready this year. Why shouldn’t I be excited over that no matter what GM brought them in?

But hey at least you admit that you are calling them a POS because of who brought them in. That’s a big step for you. That’ll be 200 bucks.

                    • Sorry, no. Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200 bucks.

Seriously though, who cares who brought these guy in? So far from what I’ve seen, I love Harvey. Good draft pick by Omar. I hope to see the same with Wheeler, TAD and maybe even Snarder-what’s-his-name. Good trades by SA.

                    • And right on cue, the man’s biggest cheerleader and your old pal from the desert following your path of dumb comments…

                  • Right, when did i admit it? i’ve been calling PO’s players who have been in mets uniform for the longest. who brought in castillo and bay? You think it’s because who brought them in i called them like that or because of their perfomance on the field? but of course, to fit YOUR AGENDA you needed to make it seem as if i was saying they are PO’ss because sandy brought them, because you need people to have sides on the GM right? it makes for a discussion that you seem to crave so much in here.. You’re really pathetic and a sad human being.

                    • “Ahhh, of course. isn’t that the same you guys do with wheeler and d’arnaud? “

                  • I think this time Alex that reaction is a little too overboard, he actually brings a reasonable response, and you instantly claim that hes saying the guy is a HOF’er. All he is saying is the guy has barely had a chance in the majors much like Valdespin, which IS on point, he never said the guy was the next greatest thing, cowgill could easily be a bust, as could Valdy. I’d personally like to see both of them and Andrew Brown get a reasonable chance for a job, who knows maybe the COMPETITION of needing to beat out others will put a fire under one and we could end up with a solid .280 15-20hr 60-70 rbi from any one of those for one season, or the start of a decent career. None of us actually know, until these players get a real opportunity.

                    That’s what he’s saying.

  • This is why I am not a big fan of off season baseball for ball players that are under contract to a MLB club. The exception is if a player is rehabbing under the watchful eye of trainers and doctors. If a player maintains an off season workout regimen and comes to spring training healthy then spring training is enough to get ready for the regular season. This happens every year. Why ballplayers risk their professional career to play in these leagues is byond me.

    • A lot of times, it is the team sending their guys to these leagues to get more reps, especially if they are learning a new position.

But ya, there is a theory that all this off season activity is what leads to the perceived rise in injuries of recent years. Guys are not recovering from the season anymore.

  • Hopefully this injury is healed or heals quickly. I don’t have a problem with the injury risk of winter ball. In Spin’s case, even at that level of competition, he has enhanced himself with his stat line and may be demonstrating some advancement of plate discipline, which would be tremendous if it carries over to this season.
I know Spin get s a bad rap publicly, and maybe he has even earned it, but short of singing Bourn, and even if they do sign Bourn, he has the tools to play at the MLB level and even excel at that level. He needs to be in the mix. He strikes me as the best CF/leadoff candidate they have. I know, his plate discipline history does not show that, but Spin is now a little older and at a stage in his life that he can better understand what it will take to hold a spot in the bigs, and clearly it starts with raising that OBP. We don’t know the details, and Collins needs to maintain some of the ability to control his players, but they can certainly deal with a little cockiness and immaturity and foster his career as well, to the benefit of him and the team.

  • Ben,

You have nothing to apologize for. You didn’t hurt the guy nor did you wish the injury on him so you have nothing to apologize over.

I have made my feeling about Valdy known,I’m not even a little bit of a fan of his. I do not deny that he is talented but Im just not a fan. That being said, I hope it is not a serious injury and that he recovers quickly and goes on an absolute tear the entire spring… So we can trade him for something of value.

    • Ahhh, yes. I was wondering where you were… Haven’t seen you in a while here trying to backtrack my comments..

  • MLB POWER RANKINGS, the alderson led mets are the 4th WORST team as of right now. SMH

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mlb/news/20130207/mlb-offseason-power-rankings/?sct=uk_t11_a5

    • Since SI’s prognosticating powers are on par with yours, I’m feeling pretty hopeful for the upcoming season.

      • Are you??? Only to once again hit in the face by reality that around july this team will be completely done and players will be placed in trading block etc… like i said, 90+ losses this year…

        • Are the Marlins still winning the WS too or can you curse the Nationals this time?

        • You said 100 losses last year.

And you declared the Marlins World Series champs.

You harped on Wright being a “POS” and he was a top 10 MVP candidate.

At what point do you just accept your track record?

    • Really? You’re taking Sports Illustrated’s stuff as gospel? SMH is right.

  • I know you missed me but I’ve been unusually busy for this time of year. Been reading the post but not really commenting. Besides until the last day or so not much has happened, it was all still the talk of the same things that were being discussed a few weeks ago. Thank you Alex, it’s good to be missed.

  • Alex,

You mentioned at the top that its. Hamstring. Is that the actual report or is that what you think it is? I ask because someone else mentioned oblique. I’m not sure it was reported. Both of those injuries suck because the take forever to heal and often get re aggravated. I’ve never seen anyone “carried off” with an oblique but who knows.

    • Sloat, i called my brother and told me he was watching the game and that’s what he thought it was. not sure what the report is.

  • Hopefully, Spin will be OK and ready to roll in ST in another couple of weeks. I also like the fact that he got a bunch of reps in RF in both the round robin and Caribbean Series. The way things stand now for RF, I prefer Baxter on the bench and Sandy and Terry giving Spin another shot in a platoon in RF with Brown or Byrd or maybe Cowgill if Bourn is brought in.

  • ESPN must not think too highly of Valdespin, they didn’t even mention that he got hurt…they showed Hanley getting helped off the field though

  • Good news with respect to Spin- Spin told Enrique Rojas on twitter that he’s not injured- had just leg cramps.

  • That’s good to hear and a also good to see that he’s using twitter for something productive. Like I said, I hope he goes on a mad tear now and gets traded for something of value.

  • Good to hear about Jordany. Hopefully he goes on a mad tear now and becomes part of the core and solution and NOT traded.

Oh and here’s the chat box guys, hopefully you can log in:
    http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:EAUtWCZTGqgJ:metsmerizedonline.com/chat/+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

  • All I can say now is WHEW. Dodged a bullet there. Like I said, I want him to win a spot in the outfield going forward.

  • Glad to hear he’s ok and thanks for the update. I think he still holds a lot of promise even though many are down on him.

  • We all moaned baout Santana pitching in the WBC….

Considering all the supposed LACK of development people say is exhibited in our prospects…
And the amount of Prospects that have been ruined and devalued due to injury issues (F-Mart, Havens etc)

Maybe we should stop sending these kids to go play baseball ALL YEAR ROUND, and force them to REST UP for a full offseason where they can work on conditioning instead to last and not tire a through a whole MLB season.

We are playing these kids into the ground and the Human body is not meant to take that kind of punishment.

Thankfully this appears to be just cramps….
But Cramps are the first sign that a muscle is not well hydrated and very likely to tear or pull….

  • Nice to be right for once. When I saw he had played 16 or 17 innings first thing I thought of was cramps.

    • Yep I was hoping since he came out after his last at bat in the bottom of the 17th inning it was something not too serious. Glad to see that indeed was the case.
