ESPN New York: Wheeler Injury Not Very Bad

zack wheeler spring

Terry Collins told ESPN New York this afternoon that the oblique injury to top prospect Zack Wheeler is “not very bad.”

Adam Rubin also reports that “the hope is to get Wheeler back on a bullpen mound in five days.”

As MMO’s John Delcos pointed out this morning, Wheeler sounds like he’ll miss just one more start before he appears in another Grapefruit League game.

As they should, the Mets are handling this one with extra caution.

Original Post 2/27

Andy Martino of the Daily News is hearing that Zack Wheeler will be scratched from his start today because of an oblique injury that happened while hitting in cage….

Wheeler has confirmed the injury and the Mets are calling it a mild strain…

“It’s mostly precautionary at this point,” general manager Sandy Alderson said. “He tried to throw and didn’t experience any problem, but he was sore to the touch so we’re backing off.”

Darin Gorski will start in place of Wheeler in Wednesday’s game against the Cardinals.

  • Or, Or…. Maybe he’s not pitching because of a trade on the making???????????????????????????????

  • This is EXACTLY the reason why you trade away young talent for proven major league talent, i.e. Stanton. You just never know when an injury will happen to someone who is not proven.

    • Mykey, exactly…. IF i am the mets, i’d do this RIGHT NOW….

    • But couldn’t you say the same thing about any player?

You probably didn’t notice, the the Mets have had some big players get bit by the injury bug. Like the guy in the second picture.

  • Boooo… Watching Wheeler pitch is one of the things I most look forward to this Spring. Hope this is nothing serious…the Mets are saying it is not. But yeah, we all know how “good” the Mets health staff is.

  • If he were to get seriously injured and miss months because he hurt himself in the batting cage, I could never forgive Alderson and I’d fire Hudgens on the spot.

    • Even i can’t blame Alderson or Hudgens for that. You gotta play ball, man. You gotta live. I don’t subscribe to the “walking on eggshells theory”.

Kid is in the cage like anybody else on a normal day and this stuff happens. Now if he’s injury prone that’s a completely different story for another day.

  • Take away Matt Cain from the Giants, add Stanton. Just those two, lets not go adding other players…

Do the Giants win two out of the last three World Series???

I don’t think so…if you’re building a team, you build on the arms of young pitching. Then, you add the nesessary offense.

    • I think though if the Giants had Stanton instead of Matt Cain you can’t rule out that they would have gone out and gotten another frontline pitcher at that time as well so it’s hard to gauge. They would be a different type of team but still able to win 2 world series. All hypothetical, though.

  • On the topic of player injuries Mets prospect Goeddel who was hit in the face yesterday with a baseball looked, well see for yourself.

  • “We didnt have oblique muscles when I played” -Yogi Berra

  • Seems the Met quacks are center stage this Spring…Francisco, Murphy, Tejada, and now Wheeler.

We will see how many return in the time frame laid out. Most of us are aware what “day-to-day” resulted in the past.

    • In fairness to the Mets medical staff they never specify which “day” they mean in “day to day”. Could be back February 28, 2013 or August 17, 2014, that’s what makes them so much fun!

  • Go Duda! Baby Steps. I agree with Keith I don’t think it’s radical changes as far as Duda’s swing. Here is what Hudgens had to say regarding Ike’s swing last season and how they tried to approach it where he talks about not changing a guy the way he swings but rather minimize some things in the swing.

  • den Dekker looking to make the highlight reel with what would of been another great catch.

  • Byrd with a dropped ball very similar to what Brown had the other day. Can’t say it was the sunlight either. Had the glasses down the whole way.

  • Burke looked good in his 1 inning today and had to laugh just a bit at I believe Keith as I sometimes confuse his voice with Darling explaining WHIP.

  • Recker with a solo shot borrows a phrase from Disney’s Wreck It Ralph and says “I’m gonna wreck it!” :-)

    • LOL. I was thinking just that when Recker went deep.

  • * * * * MMO ALERT * * * *

I’m just going to say this right here because I hate making posts about site issues. Our affiliates at FOX Sports don’t like that type of stuff.

But let be known to all of you who have gotten around our bans using a Proxy Server or IP Cloaking Software in the past…

    The Jig Is Up…

Henceforth, if you use any profanity or insults toward another reader or writer, you are gone!

If you are caught instigating or provoking another reader or writer, I am now Judge, Jury and Executioner and trust me, you will be gone.

If you have a problem with someone, tell me I will take care of it, don’t take care of it yourself.

Sooner or later new countermeasures were going to be developed. And as a couple of you now know, call them my test subjects, when you’re banned you are now banned for good.

You want to debate? Debate your heart outs. But any smart ass remarks, and snarky tones, and any profanity whatsoever, and you will be banned…

    Don’t believe me?

    Test me….

The Romper Room Antics come to an end today.

The negative tones that lead to flame wars, ends today.

    The instigating ends today….

And of course, all-out insults or profanity, ends today…

I want ANY READER to point out any comments you find offensive or insulting by emailing me at GetMetsmerized@aol.com.

Whether it’s a reader or even an MMO writer, if you are attacked, harassed or insulted let me know.

Eventually we will sort out every single bad apple until they are all gone and we will have a site where you can speak your mind about anyone or anything about the Mets players, coaches, front office and owners without fear of any retaliatory strikes against you by another reader.

All slates have been wiped clean…

Those of you already in moderation, have just gotten your weekend liberty passes and you will see that your comments will go through cleanly.

I hope I don’t have to permanently ban anyone, that”s not my intention or something I want to do.

I don’t care what you did in the past or who said what in the past. It all ends now and everyone needs to deal with that and if you can’t then let me escort you out the door first.

Lets talk some Mets baseball and if you disagree with someone and can’t contain your anger and emotions, or disagree respectfully, then maybe you should walk away.

Thanks to our affiliates for helping us to combat this issue head on. And may I say their timing couldn’t have been more perfect.

To all our readers and writers who have always stayed clear from some of these flame wars and never added any fuel to the fire, thank you for sticking with us.

I’m looking forward to a new era at MMO and I thank all of you for all your support, and one more thing…

    LETS GO METS!

    • ‘Our affiliates at FOX Sports…’

Does Fox Sports sponsor MMO now? If yes, nice. I missed that…..

    • Thank you. It’s about time. I used to love commenting on your site, Joe. But a few people have taken the fun out of it for me. You have lost a lot of people who I used to love to chat with that probably are like me and just read but never comment. I hope that Annie, Original Met Fan and Gina come back again. I look forward to good times again. Lets Go Mets!

    • Joe, I have a question.

I know you adamantly stated the other day that the shoutbox is not coming back. Regardless, are you considering instituting a “Live chat” like they usually have on MLBTR in the “Pre-Game” articles that people can talk during the game and can be closed afterwards?

      • This is something we are definitely discussing almost daily. I understand that live interaction was always a big part of MMO. We are considering some options and I’ve had discussions both with Scribble Live and Cover It Live. I’m actually waiting for a proposal from Scribble. We are also considering bringing back a sidebar chat only it will likely be Private and subscribers will only be inputted by MMO and not open registration. We will be selective as to who we approve or not. Once I get back some answers from the companies I’ve approached, I’m going to make a decision and let everyone know. But whatever we do will all happen before Opening Day. Thanks for the question.

        • Let me suggest another option similar to Cover It Live and Scribble Live called Blyve.
          http://www.blyve.com/

I’ve been experimenting with it recently and though I don’t know how they compare price wise with their competition for you they do have some nice features.

    • Can you somehow ban the Cardinals from playing the Mets? That would be helpful to the record.

    • I haven’t felt this good in a long time… i do hope that you take into consideration how some of your writers instigate and provoke some people here. while even me have to tone it down, i sincerely hope you follow through with this, more often than not we (The CORE) get attack and uncall insults our way, we fight back most of the time which is why we have been sent to the drunk tank many times. i will keep an eye on this and i will be sending you emails as soon as i see stuff going on here, we’ve had just about enough too.

      Att: THE CORE.

    • Hi Joe,

Yes, it is indeed a shame. Not only have some been so nasty as to turn others away but they also create an atmosphere of intimidation for some wanting to comment on a certain subject. It doesn’t matter who is right, wrong or the answer is somewhere in the middle – it is only a conversation and an exchange of ideas and perceptions about the Mets. Most understand this but some don’t and their sarcastic and mean spirited comments really have nothing to do with anything else but personal vendettas to make them feel better about themselves.

      • You’re right Joey. I’ve never seen you insult anyone. And it’s sad that some of those that disagree with others resort to backhanded insults or upfront insults, and sarcasm as a defense mechanism because their arrogance makes them see things only their way. To them there is no room for an alternate opinion and even meeting in the middle is not good enough. It’s sort of a Napoleonic complex. The good news is that unlike before, these shenanigans can now be addressed quickly and effectively.

  • “I am now Judge, Jury and Executioner”

  • I recall seeing this lady on and off over the years mainly due to her hat and God Bless her at 83 years of age she still loves her Mets.

    http://youtu.be/-N06qwcNxko

    • She was just in the background on the last Mets Hotstove, I believe when they were interviewing Murphy or Ike she was sitting in the background.

God Bless her, in no rush to get there but, one day, that will be me :)

      • LoL, with or without the Mets tattoos? :-)

  • I have to laugh at tweet about Beltran saying the Mets won the Beltran Wheeler trade. Clearly he is not an avid reader of MMO. :-P

    https://twitter.com/AdamRubinESPN/status/306898999888183296

  • “This is EXACTLY the reason why you trade away young talent for proven major league talent, i.e. Stanton. You just never know when an injury will happen to someone who is not proven.”

No! I have to scratch my head sometimes. Injuries happen to everyone and every kind of player. Beltran (you know the guy he was traded for) wasn’t EVER the picture of health.

It’s insane to think about trading Wheeler or anyone else to avoid them getting hurt. One NEVWR knows when someone is goi g to get hurt. If they did then they would prevent it.

  • “As they should, the Mets are handling this one with extra caution.”

    This.

  • Wow gone for a day and you miss everything! I believe you give Wheeler if he’s heathly a
real shot of making the mets rotation this year! If he’s not ready send him to AAA allthough
I’m not sure how getting hit in Las Vegas will help him except to mess up his head! I know
the mets aren’t going to the world seres this year but giving Wheeler and Travis a year in
the ML’s now will make them ready for next year when the mets will sign FA’s and
and compete for the Wild Card! They will get plenty of mental toughness pitching & catching for the mets this year! Let him pitch and if he’s ready great if not send them to AAA! What if Davey Johnson had sent Doc Gooden down and he was 19 years old instead of giving him
a chance? Everybodys makeup is different and should be judged that way and not tell everybody Wheeler will start in AAA before he even throws a pitch in spring training! I

  • I don’t know why they put Pitchers in the cage at all…
Seems a rather pointless endeavor considering they are never really expected to hit well in a game, Mostly are told to bunt a runner over, and really have nothing to gain from being in a batting cage this early in the season.

Better to let them hit off a tee the way they do with Hitters coming back from injury and until such time as they make the team and the rotation is set, no reason to risk injury and thrown balls in a Batting Practice enviornment.

I know they would all protest loudly but too bad…make the team then we will worry about you hitting better once your good enough to Pitch in something meaningful.
