Joe Saunders Expected To Make Decision Soon

Joe SaundersAfter holding out for a three-year deal for most of the winter, it appears that Joe Saunders is close to deciding where he’ll pitch in 2013.

The Mets are reportedly interested in signing the left-hander to replace R.A. Dickey and fill their vacant spot in the starting rotation.

According to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports, Orioles vice president Dan Duquette said today that Saunders is probably going to make a decision this week.

The Orioles have also shown interest in retaining Saunders, but don’t have a real sense of whether he’ll be back or plans to sign elsewhere.

Saunders is unlikely to get the three-year contract he wants, but will likely sign a one- or two-year deal. The Twins and Padres have also been connected to him besides the O’s and Mets.

Saunders, 31, posted a 4.07 ERA and 112/39 K/BB ratio over 174 2/3 innings last season with the Diamondbacks and Orioles. He owns a 4.15 ERA over eight seasons in the majors.

  • The Mets are not signing him this shouldn’t even be a thought. Alderson has no intention on spending more than 1-2 million on a player.

  • This is just another con game and the Mets will not sign him. Aim lower. If they do sign him I’ll change the name on our banner to Alderson Avenue for one day.

    • You say what now? :-D

    • LOL Call it Alderson Alley…Where you get beat up on a daily basis!

Actually if he goes anywhere from the teams that are mentioned it’s probably Baltimore…

He has tasted futility in Arizona at least in Baltimore he has a hope they pick up where they left off.

    • Maybe we should just sign someone for the hell of it, This guy is a bum

  • 7MM per and 2 years for some finesse lefty and 4 or 5SP on the Mets. I don’t think so.

  • Harvey, Wheeler and maybe Santana and maybe Gee will be on limited innings in 2013.

Saunders is valuable as an innings eater.

Get er done you cheap basteds.

  • The Mets should consider Chris Capuano if the Dodgers make him available. He’s a bit more dynamic than Saunders and would probably fit in better with Harvey, Niese, Wheeler & Gee.

The difficulty in assessing the Mets rotation is that no one can predict how Johan will perform this year. Will he be the dominant pitcher in the first half of last season, or fall apart like he did after the All Star break?

In my view, Capuano gives the Mets a chance to win every time he takes the mound. Two years ago, he had one of the most dominant pitching performances ever in a Met uniform in his 2-hit 13K gem against the Braves.

    Niese & Capuano = Leiter & Hampton

In the 2nd half of 2013, our rotation could look like:

    Harvey
    Niese
    Wheeler
    Capuano
    Gee

    I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

  • When Sandy decides profit making becomes less risky re-investing in players than it is cutting expenditures is the day we can start thinking in terms of who the Mets might be seriously pursuing players other than those who he labeled “inexpensive”.

Competitive integrity takes a back seat to the real world of business when seen in terms of maximum profit. Or, in this case, ownership stability.

    • Well said.
However, I just don’t think SA will be that GM. Ownership stability seems further away than the end of SA’s contract.

      • Hi srt,

I was thinking of that myself. What happens with the general manager that comes after Sandy? Will the Wilpons simply continue with the re-organization and cost-cuts instituted by Sandy?

  • Just more smoke and mirrors from the Mets. Aldersons busily rummaging through
the discount bin at the A&P for another dented can bargain.

SA’s odyssey with the Mets should be titled “Long Days Journey Into
Night” with apologies to Eugene O’Neal
    Both tales are equally depressing.

  • “If you need me but don’t want me I stay.”
“If you want me but don’t need me I go”

SA told this to Fred when Selig appointed him GM of the Mets.

    My Meandering Musings:

SA is the Wizard of Money Ball
    Correction
SA is the Wizard of Low Ball

Seriously for all his screwing up with Ike he final did it correctly.
Remember behind the Curtain Call is the Wizard of Low Ball
But a good Wizard would transform the OF to at least major league caliber
But shifty Sandy has something up his sleeve
How many pies should he order for Justin Turner?

  • This is off topic but I just heard the news Stan Musial died today at the age of 92.
I feel really bummed about it because I got to see “Stosh” at the Polo Grounds in 63
the year he retired. He was always a class act and a terrific hitter.
Losing Stan and Earl Weaver on the same day is a dark day for the game.
    R.I.P Stan and Earl.

    • ‘Losing Stan and Earl Weaver on the same day is a dark day for the game.
      R.I.P Stan and Earl.’

So true. Hope that old wives tale of things happening in 3s does not apply this time.

  • Ok I am not going to wait up for the Door is Closed, No Wait maybe it is still open double update that I am SURE will get attached to this story! LOL

  • Don’t waste the money. He is not that great. We have enough young pitching to eat up the innings. Who knows one of the kids may work out.
