Twins Sign Mike Pelfrey
Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports that the Twins have agreed to a one-year deal with right-hander Mike Pelfrey worth $4 million with the chance to earn $1.5 million more in incentives.
So much for that theory…
Pelfrey, 28, went 50-54 with a 4.36 ERA in parts of seven seasons with the Mets, but missed most of 2012 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April. He is reportedly throwing well and is expected to be ready for the start of the 2013 season.
In 2012, Pelfrey looked like he finally figured things out putting up just a 2.29 ERA in 19 2/3 innings before he was shelved for the season.

As we digest this trade, lets remember how much of a great prospect Pelfrey was considered.
Plus Philip Humber before him, and Lasting Milledge and Fernando Martinez after him. What are your thoughts on the trade Salty?
I’ll tell you both what I told my good friend when he said something similar
the difference between those guys and guys like wheeler, d’arnaud etc is very important.
The first guys were developed by the Mets. These guys were developed by other teams. So that should comfort you lol
WOW! LOL I think this is the most negative I have seen you, and you are spot on…
In any other Mets era where they are trending down, I think it’s a good move to sell high on a 38 year old pitcher. Catching is so poor MLB wide, that it will be awesome if he becomes a solid player for years to come.
Where I am annoyed is I have no trust in this organization to attempt to make this team better in 2013 to offset the loss. OF is a black hole along with the pen and it feels like they are using the Wright and Dickey decisions to their advantage to not do much else. During this whole period there could of been something else done and now more and more players are off the board. A bunch of money was freed up, including in this deal, and Sandy himself said there were no guarantees that they would use it.
So if the prospects don’t pan out, then you are adding more years until the team will be relevant again. If they invested in the MLB roster while making these trades, then the risk of these trades would have less chance of hurting the team.
I don’t know if you’re a Walking Dead fan, but there’s a line from one of the characters named Herschel.
He looks across his farm that is swarming with zombies and says, “I know Christ promised a resurrection, but I had no idea he had this in mind.”
Wholesale changes didn’t necessarily mean improvements to the 2013 team. What do you think this adds up to in the loss column?
LOL! That’s one in my Netflix queue to start power streaming.
Last year I thought 68 wins, so I was off by six. The year before I believe my official prediction was 5 below the actual total. Right now with no additions to the OF I think 70 is fair right now. Dickey over-performed last year, I see Ike being more consistent and I feel Harvel is the real deal and should have a solid year.
I agree with your tally. 90+ losses seem like a reality barring any real significant additions.
I was upset that the only major leaguer we got back was .198 hitting John Buck? If we had gotten a top prospect for the future and viable piece for the major league roster, I would have grinned and beared it. But all the kids in my family seem to love the deal and kids should be happy at this special time of the year. Sandy Claus did right by them.
As for us, we’ll just keep waiting and hoping for the best.
By the way, you’re going to love Walking Dead. It was actually Mr. North Jersey who turned me onto it. Hey, all of you at the Real Dirty have a happy holiday. I’m sure I’ll make an appearance there before Christmas or otherwise Rusty will get grouchy with me.
Same to you Joe! Been enjoying your twitter banter with Rusty all weekend.
It’s kind of ridiculous how you’re trying to make this out into a negative Joe.
The Walking Dead is a great show by the way
It’s hard to make a positive until we see the results. On paper the Beltran and Dickey trades look great, but how many wins can be associated with those moves? ZERO. So for the trade, it’s a wait and see. There has been nothing else to improve the MLB roster in three years and counting.
Agreed.
It will be awhile before we find out if this was a good trade for us.
Sorry, in that article Joe linked, 1-20 top prospects bust about half the time, and prospects ranked from 70-100(probably around where Syndergaard will be) bust 75-80% of the time.
So, according to that, D’arnaud has about a 50% chance of being productive and Syndergaard has like a 20-25% chance of being productive.
And just to be clear, I’m not saying it’s a bad trade, I’m just saying it we should wait before we really judge this trade. It’s going to be awhile before we know if this is a good or bad trade.
Uh, no. The move is good in theory so it’s a good move. You can’t predict exactly which prospects will work out. D’Arnaud and Syndergaard have as good of a combination of floor and upside as any 2 prospects in the game. D’Arnaud and Syndergaard have a better chance of making the mets consistent contenders than Dickey. I’m not even mentioning the money the mets are saving by doing this, or the likelihood that Dickey is going to start declining because of his age therefore making this sell high scenario the way to go.
And like any good theory it can be accepted or disproved. If you go back to my comment at the top, I said at any other time where the Mets are in a situation where they are trending down, it’s a good move. Where the failure is, is not bolstering the roster while we wait. I gave Sandy a pass for the first two off-season’s until the financial crap was solidified. It has, there is certainty but yet they still are acting like paupers. Time to take them to task.
The financial restraints? Given those, this was the best possible move. If they were falling apart than this would still be a good move, I agree. I mean I would have liked to sign dickey to an extension and then sign swisher, but apparently the money’s not there. There is more evidence leading toward the Wilpons still having financial issues than there is for Sandy just being stagnant.
The theory thing was more about the prospects vs. dickey
Like Joe D pointed out in a post a few weeks ago, BA’s top 100 prospects bust 70% of the time. So, just going by the percentages, D’arnaud and Syndergaard only have about a 30% chance of actually being good productive players.
So, while I love prospects as much as the next guy, I realize that they have a very low chance of of actually being productive.
And as for Dickey, he was just outstanding last season, and was very good in 2011 and 2010. Age doesn’t effect knuckleballers the same way as a conventional pitcher, so I don’t think his age will stop him from continuing his success.
That’s why it is smart to take a wait and see approach on this trade .
Yeah but that’s for top 100 prospects. Syndergaard (what a kickass name) Is top 50-ish and d’Arnaud is top 10. I’m sure the percentage is much higher up there.
Read my post that was posted above. It’s about 50% of top 1-20 prospects are busts. And 70-100 is 75-80%. If you feel Syndergaard is 50ish, the percentage is pretty much the same as 70-100.
my bad didnt see that
I’m actually agreeing with Salty, the Mayans must be right! How do you think he’s making this out to be a negative?
Lets do some math. Will we win more games or less games after this trade? Take your time I’ll wait.
Time’s up. We will win less games = Negative
Right direction or wrong direction is measured in wins, not dreams, hopes and wishes.
Lesson is over.
Or the “prospects” that ended up with the above-mentioned Twins in the Santana deal.
In fairness on the Prospect side
Texas traded:
1.Mark Teixeira
2.Ron Mahay
to the Atlanta Braves for
1.Jarrod Saltalamacchia
2.Elvis Andrus
3.Matt Harrison
4.Neftalí Feliz
5.Beau Jones
2-Way street……
Right.
And if you go back further, from like ’95-04′ there were a lot of current day stars moved in trades.
I have no examples right now, but I think people have mentioned them before. I think the Indians made a habit of trading away prospects that panned out.
Lol…yeah I know the trade youre thinking of
Montreal traded:
GradySizemore
Cliff Lee
Brandon Phillips
Lee Stevens
to Cleveland for:
Bartolo Colón
Tim Drew
That trade took place because the Expos and Twins were going to be contracted and the MLB bought the Expos from Jeff Loria. Since they were owned by the MLB the GM at the time Omar Minaya couldnt spend any money at all….So since they thought it was the teams last years he purged all there best prospects to put together a competitive team. After-all they werent ever gonna play for Montreal either way….but they ended up just being relocated to DC in the end lol…
Braves have an amazing farm system, a big reason why they are always competitive.
LMAO!!!!!
Way to throw ice cold water on a sleeping baby
“trade” what trade? we didn’t trade Pelfrey we let him go. right?
Dependent on the incentives,
Mike Pelfrey may make more money than RA Dickey in 2013.
Good…..see ya Pelf.
I’m deleting the comment you made to Sally in the other thread. I know it’s cool and fun to use that language on the internet these days, but I don’t allow it here. Thanks for understanding.
Thanks. My name is actually Sal, but “sallybaby” is a nickname I have inherited from my football and baseball teammates.
With regards to Pelfry, Humber, Miledge, etc, etc. also being great coveted prospects, please remember how RUSHED they were. I love Omar as talent evaluator (please save the comparisons or the need to compare) but he had a hair trigger when it came to bringing up prospects.
Hmuber came out in the same draft as Jared Weaver. Humber got hurt at St Lucie and was never the same pitcher.
I’ve heard Weaver, who was in the majors in 2006 ahead of Humber, has turned out ok.
Without a horrible rotation this team is a 70 win club.
And guess what? Who cares?
There’s been a lot of crying on this site about not having a plan…well, after seeing how big the money was for just decent players in today’s market, the mets knowing they’d never have enough to compete decided to sell high on their ace.
There’s your precious plan. Get as many high ceiling prospects as possible and go for it in 2014. I hope they use their 20-25 mill this offseason and upgrade the outfield.
Delmon Young
Cody Ross
Either or
May I suggest a dark horse and a former Met as an option for CF and a leadoff hitter?
Ready?
Carlos Gomez. The guy hit 19 HRs last season and although his line last season looks bad otherwise, here’s a guy that can benefit from the Mets hitting philosophy of working the count. Last season, when he got ahead in the count, his line was .320/.438/.608/1.046 in 90 of the 137 games he played. It seems to me that what you have here is a late bloomer in the making. This would be one of my next moves if I were the Mets (along with trading for Kendrys Morales). We can possibly snatch him from Milwaukee while his value seems to be low.
This! I’ve been saying this all winter.
I’d be for that. Always liked Gomez even though he never met expectations. But like you say, he could be a late bloomer.
I have been hounding for him all off season too. Only worry is that he is in his last year, and I believe a Boras guy. So odds are, not looking for an extension before the season. So I would not see them giving up serious talent for a 1 year rental. Much more likely to spend some of the cash on a 1 year guy I would think.
I forgot he was a Boras guy. Still, he won’t cost much and it wouldn’t hurt to try to get him in order to boost the top of the order, even if it is a 1 year rental.
“well, after seeing how big the money was for just decent players in today’s market, the mets knowing they’d never have enough to compete decided to sell high on their ace.”
You are aware that those prices will NEVER come down, Right?
Those are the new market prices so with your thinking the Mets will never sign another decent free agent EVER! Because the price goes up from here.
Simple Supply and Demand….and if you cant afford the supply make your own (farm system pun) but at some point youre gonna have to pay them to lol….Ive never seen a successful all homegrown baseball team in the free agency era…
With that said I view Cody Ross as a decent player in todays market and I would love for the Mets to sign him…Hell, I wanted them to sign him last year…but I doubt it with this new FO…
Delmon Young is a terrible defender…If we didnt already have Duda in LF I’d more than welcome Young
The only way I field both of them in the OF together is if Willie Mays is my Center Fielder.
You do know that Mays is free agent eh?
Best of luck Pelf! New York was not your kind of a town. It was not your arm that worried me. Enjoy the change of venue. I hope your new battery mate brings out the best in you.
*shrugs*
Oh well….
Pelfrey was a guy who had talent but lacked the inner fortitude to take it to the next level. He might be a guy that the pressure of NY was just too much for. A place like MN might see him thrive. The bright lights of the Big Apple are just overpowering to many.
To sum up this whole Dickey Smear campaign heres what someone whom actually is on the team said according to Andy Martino a real Journalist who works for a real newspaper..lol
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Andy Martino @MartinoNYDN
Best way to sum up Dickey’s status in locker room came from 1 Met who liked him a lot: “Only the d — bags didn’t like him.”
https://twitter.com/MartinoNYDN/status/280463961294524416
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here’s a better way to sum up the Dickey smear campaign. There was no smear campaign.
The Mets have been in rebuilding mode since the ill fated Minaya years of win now which included mortgaging the future by trading away much of our young talent combined with the Madoff debacle. This shouldn’t be a real mystery to anyone who has actually been paying attention over the last decade.
Dickey was the most valuable trading commodity the Mets had. You don’t rebuild with a 38 year old knuckeballer pitcher who has a mostly undistinguished history and who has been pitching through pain and with injuries, you trade him while he has maximum value. I know this, Dickey knows this, the Mets know this and people who claim to know baseball should know this. The dance that Dickey and the Mets have been doing over the last couple weeks was just Kabuki theater and this was always where it was going to end up.
Dickey is a good guy and I wish him well but his greatest value to the Mets, whom he pitched for a grand total of 3 years, was his trade value. He’s about to be an extremely wealthy guy, good for him. But the Mets have a ton of holes that need filing and while his departure will open up another short term one the Mets weren’t going anywhere in 2013 with him. The Mets were not going to be competitive in 2013 with Dickey and the limited budget they had to spend. The move was always to build for the future.
We are getting tremendous value for Dickey including one of the best young catchers in the game and another stud arm. We’ve gone from one of the worst farm systems in the league a couple years ago to one with some of the best young arms in the game and in 2013 and beyond we are going to have some serious money to spend and a butt load of chips to trade.
Get over winning the World Series in 2013, it was never going to happen. And if you don’t win the last game of the year, who give a crap if we have a marginally better team with an even older knuckleball pitcher and fewer young prospects.
Thole is not our catcher of the future. For that alone, you should be giving thanks.
You dont get it…..
I dont have a problem with the Mets trading Dickey. I actually thought it was best that they trade him if they were overwhelmed with an offer instead of re-signing him. Which they did….
BUT…..where the problem comes in is there is a much larger contingent of Mets fans whom felt this was a bad move to trade Dickey.
And in order to sway public opinion the Wilponzi’s start there campaign to smear Dickey through unnamed Mets sources…then boom the TMZ of newspapers the NY Post prints an article bashing Dickey for being a selfish monster whom his teammates hated lol….and gets NY Mets SNY Shill #1 Burkhardt to co-sign it and state how the post did a good job with the article….Burkhardt coincidently (not really)happens to be the same bozo whom asked Dickey these questions at the x-mas event…
None of these things were ever said about Dickey in his entire tenure here nor elsewhere as far as I know….And us Mets fans arent new to this tactic the Mets do it ALL the TIME for years….
That is the smear campaign everyone is upset about….not the fact that they are trading him but how they are sending him off by treating him like SH*T and sullying his name and character. Politicians do this all the time….smear campaigns to sway public opinion…those commercials they do to bash one another leaking things to the media etc etc
Joe just can’t give credit to Sandy when it’s do. Earlier today he painted a picture is this deal being about spite and not the money; even giving reasons why RA would make little enough for them to keep. Now he’s saying its all about the money. This deal is such a no brainer it’s scary to think there’s people who’ll cry about it.
You’re going complain about Buck when they’ve gotten another arm like Snydegaard? That’s really pushing it.
There are some people that have such an anti-Sandy agenda at this point that nothing he does will ever be greeted with acceptance, let alone praise.
No different than the anti Omar agenda. But it’s okay to bash the you know what. So warm me with your wonderful Minaya memories because you are so different from the people with agendas. Cant wait to read your words of cheer.
“ifthevansrockin” keep in mind before you reply to this from met maniac that this is the same person who celebrated with a big woo hoo when Minaya was fired.
It’s okay to have an anti minaya agenda while he is in office apparently, but not afterwards when you have all the facts in front of you. go figure
That’s right because I dont have an agenda and I’n not race-ist.
I’m an equal opportunity GM basher when they deserve it.
Plus who knew Minaya left us with such a gem in Dickey. Anything good about this team came before Alderson not during or after it, and his only signature moves were because of the great value in the players Minaya signed. At the time I didn’t realize how much better off the team was than we all thought.
Hi Harvey, hello Niese, what’s up Ike Davis…
Ho ho ho, thanks Omar.
Thanks for commenting.
Thank God Steve Phillips hired the scouts that signed Harvey, Niese and Ike or else Omar would have nothing to hang his hat on.
Ho ho ho… Merry Christmas… Thanks Sandy!!!
Ho ho ho. Thanks Omar. No Wheeler or D’Arnaud without Beltran and Dickey. Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas.
Ho ho ho
Take it easy…
Im all for this trade due to the state of the Mets thanks to Hurricane Sandy Alderson depleting it of all its talent without replenishing it….Wish he wouldve done this with Reyes instead of watching him walk away for nada…
But, I wont get mad at the few Mets fans who are upset with losing RA Dickey reigning CY Young winner and the one Met player that EVERYONE LIKED….. not even David Wright can say that
Dickey was a gamer and beloved by Mets fans you dont let guys like that go….but I understand and like the trade….Joe and others may not but you cant force your views on them as if they are wrong for feeling that way….again they are all unproven prospects…
The one good thing we can all agree on in this deal is that Thole will no longer be a MEt
Moves all depend on how you view them in the bigger picture.
How did Miami make out by overpaying for Reyes? How were the Mets going to resign him with money they didn’t have? Who has a better team right now, the Mets or the Marlins?
Trades have nothing to do with liking a player. It’s all about what makes your team better.
I’ve been a Mets fan for a long, long, long, long time. I’ve had enough of lovable losing teams. I’m much more partial to likable winning teams.
As I said earlier, I like Dickey but I like the trade even more.
And I also like Wright who any “fan” with any knowledge of the game knows is one of the best 3rd baseman in the game, a perennial all-star and a guy you can not only build a team around but a franchise.
What the hell are you talking about?????
Can you read? I stated Alderson shouldve traded Reyes like he did with Beltran and is doing now with Dickey instead of letting him walk for nothing. However if it was my choice I wouldve re-signed Reyes one of the BEST Shortstops in the game right now. And Reyes played well for the Marlins not great but he played well.
“Who has a better team right now, the Mets or the Marlins?”
Where did I mention the Marlins other than saying Alderson whouldve traded Reyes???? SMH…
But to answer youre question of whom is better right now Marlins are Mets…My answer is WHO CARES? THEY BOTH STINK!!!!!
And if youve been a Mets fan for a long time you’d know the Mets havent been loveable losers since the 60′s,70′s….Early 80′s and 90′s Mets fans were disgusted by them for being losers…and we are disgusted by them now…no one loves this losing team thats why we complain and gripe about how terrible they are.
And how did I know you were gonna end your spiel praising David Wright after bashing Reyes…LMAO…Why do you bozo’s always do that???lol…pathetic
Reyes and Wright were side notes in my post yet you replied to bash Reyes and praise Wright…..I dont understand the need to bring down Reyes and bring up Wright and praise him in this situation….
I have to agree with others when they bring up racism because it is ridiculous….I was talking about DICKEY lol,,,,Not Reyes or Wright
1. I compared DICKEY being traded to REYES and said Sandy shouldve TRADED REYES TOO and got back a nice return.
2. Then I compared DICKEY to WRIGHT in regards to being BELOVED!
I said………….”EVERYONE LIKED….. not even David Wright can say that” Didnt say Wright was hated or that he was a terrible player…I said Dickey is loved by the whole fanbase Wright is Loved by a very large part of the fanbase BUT he has a good amount of detractors.
******Sooooooooooooooooooo PLEASE tell me—WHY did you feel the need to reply to me by BASHING REYES as overpaid then ending it with how GREAT DAVID WRIGHT IS???
I want to understand…because all I can come up with is blatant RACISM…..
Smh…dude my whole post was about Dickey and you replied with a tiny sentence about Dickey that said…………..
“i like dickey, but i like the trade”
thats all u said about Dickey lol…..Please help me understand because im rambling now I just want to understand your logic
David Wright = The Mets version of Rocky Balboa

LOL
me thinks some met fans are scared that baseball is going to look like boxing…this is the reason why Omar caught so much extra flack
last week someone on mlb made a posting about bringing omar back
http://www.forums.mlb.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?tsn=1&nav=messages&webtag=ml-mets&tid=546183
“Omar Minaya DESTROYED this team with the deal he made. The Latino Express is gone, its time for some tough, smart baseball decisions to be made and Sandy is making them.”
“I want to understand…because all I can come up with is blatant RACISM…..”
WHAT? You can’t even be a little bit serious with that……….
Yes You can ….
Seriously, who cares about Pelfrey? Screw him I had enough of his baby ass shit. Glad he’s no longer an option!
“Ho ho ho. Thanks Omar. No Pelfrey without Omar. Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas.”
Isn’t that what you meant to say?
Yes we agree. Pelfrey, a perfect example why proven major league talent trumps unknown quantities every day of the week.
Major leaguers stars > prospects/suspects.
Hopefully d’Arnaud works out better than Toronto’s last #1 Prospect Travis Snyder and #3 Brad Emaus. Thanks for commenting.
P.S. Is there an organization that has had more minor league busts than the Blue Jays?

BJ Ryan…AJ Burnett…Alex Rios….Vernon Wells just to name a few
the only way he gets another GM gig in baseball is if his lord and savior Sandy hooks him up with a gig
had this been Omar hooking up failures like Ruben Amaro with a job, 99% of you folks would be crying favoritism
since its Sandy hiring his son, and a few Ivy League failures, mum is the word
ah, what “fans”, hate on the guy who produced a division title and winning seasons, and love the clown that produces nothing but lost seasons/
Imagine if Sandy would’ve traded David Wright to Cincinatti for:
Amir Garrett
Billy Hamilton
a couple of relievers
now that would be a complete rebuild
Umm…. Ok, first of all, i’ve been reading how sandy just made a great move for the future yada yada.. With that being said, is it fair to say we are punting 2013 just like we did 2011 and 2012? Once again, 2 moves all offseason around david wright and dickey, other than that the mets have been sitting on their hands in terms of adding talent to the team to improve. Let’s hope this trade works out for us, i have been reading good things about this kid d’Arnaud, he’s not a superstar but a good player who can hit 20-25 HR for us while calling a good game, let’s hope this trade works out better than that famous trade we did with TOR for another pitcher back in 1992 or that this prospect turns out to be better than the last prospect we acquired from them 2 years ago in the rule V. Good move for the future, but let’s focus on 2013, we have not made a single move to improve this team and most likely we won’t. 2013 will be another wasted year under sandy while we wait for Nimmo, Wheeler, d’Arnaud to come up and save the franchise..
Holy Crap! This is getting to the point of insanity. I loved Dickey and I’m sad to see him go but I love this trade. Yes I understand that there is a huge risk with dealing in prospects but the reward is also pretty large. All “experts” (and I know that they are wrong more than the average weather man) agree that the Mets got a great package for Dickey and now we need to further develop these players.
I wonder, for all those who are making a big deal of loosing RA, I wonder how they would react next year if he went on say a 4 or 5 game loosing streak were his era jumps to over 5 for that time frame. They would be the first ones kicking and screaming that we should have traded him for anything.
I wonder, for all those who are making a big deal of loosing RA, I wonder how they would react next year if he went on say a 4 or 5 game loosing streak were his era jumps to over 5 for that time frame”
Ok, now flip it the other way around, what if he’s yet again a CY candidate? What if he does have an awesome season? Again, this deal needed to be made, it was done, we’ll be able to know who got the better of the deal in 5 or maybe 6 years.
Morning buddy.
“Again, this deal needed to be made, it was done, we’ll be able to know who got the better of the deal in 5 or maybe 6 years.”
Wowsa, nice job. Alex took his rational pill this morning…
Well, If this deal turns out to be like the david cone deal, we won’t have to wait that long… I am sure you know that right?
Yeah, but like you said. Considering the return… it had to be made.
Listen, “Buddy” i was in full on board in trading BOTH wright and dickey, we are not gonna contend in 2013, why pay $20+ million for them if we are not gonna compete? Get as much as you can for both, reload with talent all around and go from there. but instead, inexplicably we signed wright to a long term while rebuilding.. Makes sense. SMH!
As you know I was fine with Wright being traded and wrote a few pieces of my own but I did want MLB ready talent in return for him. That being said, I do believe the deal he signed is far from handicapping and I can see why they believed it was necessary to extend him and at worst he was signed at fair market. That’s done. Can’t change it. However, keeping both Wright and Dickey and being competitive would only have been possible if they were willing to bump payroll back to 140M and that wasn’t happening.
Good riddance to that goofball.
