Mets Talking To Saunders, Marcum And Pavano

Shaun+Marcum+Milwaukee+Brewers+v+Colorado+cphK8DYS2Swl

According to Marc Carig of Newsday, the Mets are now kicking the tires on Joe Saunders. He reports that they are still discussing Carl Pavano and Chris Young, as well as Shaun Marcum.

Saunders would be a nice addition to the Mets rotation, and could easily slot into the number four or five spot. He has a career record of 78-65, and was solid for the Orioles this past season, pitching to a 3.63 ERA after being acquired at the trade deadline.

Marcum is also someone of interest, as he is a very solid pitcher when healthy. He has four straight seasons pitching to an ERA of 3.70 or less. He has spent his last two seasons with the Brewers, going a combined 20-11 in 54 starts. Marcum has a career record of 57-36, and an ERA of 3.76.

  • I would do Marcum. He may have some health risks but when he is healthy he pitches well.

  • We must have different definitions of the words “solid pitcher: and “nice addition”. All I see here is crap.

  • Please not the american idle. noooooooooooooo!!

  • LMAO

Sandy is still waiting for the market to come to him !

    LMAO

  • No way in the world the Mets sign Shaun Marcum, he is a solid pitcher when Healthy and will cost money. Money that the Mets arent interested in spending.

Dont get your hopes up Mets fans on any potential free agent signing rumor regarding the Mets. If it sounds good it aint gonna happen.

  • Sometimes I think the F/O leaks these “rumors” so that the fans will believe they really are trying to do something. Like they were “kicking the tires” on Cody Ross……”willing to offer two years to Ryan Ludwick”…..”talking to” Shaun Marcum……etc., etc., etc. When in reality it’s more like Sandy made one call apiece to the agents of these players so that it’s not “technically” a fabrication or lying to the fan base. The reality is, is that if any of these guys cost more than one year and one million dollars to sign, the Mets aren’t going to be their destination. That’s this F/O’s definition of letting the market come to them….THEIR terms, NOT the players’ terms. That might work if there is no market for a particular player, but there is ALWAYS a market for pitching, even mediocre or merely average pitching (i.e., Marcum, Liriano, Saunders). Don’t believe these rumors. Look for more mediocre moves, like the one that was reported as “working on an OF’er not previously linked to Mets”, which turned out to be, drum roll please………..Colin Cowgill.

    • And when reports state the Mets “are considering” a certain player, or players, translate that as: Sandy, JP, and DePo have to go consult their statistical ouija boards to determine the “true” value of that player. So, considering how long it takes these guys to make moves that means that either, A- the players they’re being offered or considering aren’t worth the money, according to the ouija boards OR B- the boards are incredibly SLOW in generating answers! LOL :)

    • I agree no significant signing in the works. Maybe another trade for a reliever or some lower level signing to slap in the bullpen, or minor league with invitation to spring training. Alderson is just serving lip service and continues to dupe the fans. Heck the Pirates signed Liriano, you mean to tell me the Mets could not make a better offer? Saunders? I doubt it, Marcum? Like others have said if healthy he costs, and we know Pavano cannot pitch in NY (Ed Whitson), so what’s left?

      • You wanted the Mets to make a better offer than 14 million, for a pitcher who can’t throw strikes and has had over a 5 ERA the last two years? If his name wasn’t Liriano and he gave 14 million to a pitcher like that, everyone would want his head on a pike.

        I laugh.

        • No most of us wanted them to pay 10 Mil per for a Cy Young pitcher the next three years instead….

We are only looking at the guys you just mentioned because you wanted a catcher with bad back and bad knee and some A Ball pitcher more than saving money and making good sound contract signings….

And as a result your left overpaying for crap what you could have paid that Cy Young Pitcher.

But he is doing a great job just ask anyone…..

  • Hoping for Marcum. He’s the best of this bunch, but may want multi-year deal out of the Mets’ price range

  • They should be careful here….
Everytime someone says they are kicking the tires somone else drives away with the car and they could get their foot crushed if they are caught offguard…..

    • They kick the tires then they spit out the bile in their mouth when they learn they want more than $500K.

      • Or want more than the worth of just the tires! LOL

Lots of tires around here…Nothing to drive!

  • Saunders! I called this one the other day. dude is a great fit. especially going from Zona and Baltimore to Citi Field and the rest of the NL East parks, minus Philly of course.

  • What ever happened to getting a power-hitting outfielder?
