Mets Officialy Announce New Wright Contract

The New York Mets today announced that they have agreed to terms with David Wright on a new contract through 2020.  Wright will be in Nashville, Tenn. at Baseball’s Winter Meetings for an 11:00 a.m. (CST) press conference tomorrow which will be carried live on SNY and Mets.com.

“I’d like to thank Fred Wilpon, Saul Katz and Jeff Wilpon for their commitment to me since I was drafted,” said Wright. “I’ve grown up in this organization and made life-long friendships with teammates, uniform personnel and front office staff.  I’m grateful for the opportunity to finish what I’ve started and help bring the Mets and our fans a World Series title.”

Wright, who will turn 30 on December 20, became the Mets all-time leader in hits, runs scored, walks and RBI in 2012. He was already the club leader in doubles, total bases and game-winning RBI.

“We’re thrilled for the organization and our fans that David will be a Met for many years to come,” said Mets COO Jeff Wilpon. “As great a player as David’s been with us on the field – one of the greatest and most popular Mets ever – he’s been equally outstanding in the community.”

Wright was named to his sixth All-Star team in 2012. He is a two-time Louisville Silver Slugger Award winner (2007-2008) and has won two Rawlings Gold Gloves (2007-2008).

“We said signing David to a contract that would keep him in a Mets uniform was our top offseason priority,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “Today is a historic day for the franchise and an important step in securing a winning future for this team and our fans.”

Over his nine-year career with the Mets, Wright owns a .301 batting average with 790 runs scored, 322 doubles, 19 triples, 204 home runs, 818 RBI and 166 stolen bases in 1,262 games. His 204 home runs rank third in team history behind Darryl Strawberry (252) and Mike Piazza (220).

“I think it’s a great statement that David wanted to stay with the organization that drafted him,” said Mets Manager Terry Collins. “David is the leader of this team in the clubhouse, on the field and in the community.”

Wright hit .306 (178-581) with 91 runs scored, 41 doubles, 21 home runs, 93 RBI and a .391 on-base percentage last season.

  • I can honestly say I DO NOT want Hairston back on this team UNLESS he is platooning with Duda in LF.

The Mets have to get at LEAST “2″ Starting Outfielders that can get penciled in the lineup everyday….

PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! PLEASE!!! NO MORE MUSICAL CHAIRS IN THE OUTFIELD NEXT YEAR!!!

  • I wouldn’t mind Scott being back in left next year. Maybe Duda gets traded in a deal for Myers and Then Kirk can go in center as a strikeout HR kinda guy.

  • We deperately need starting MLB-caliber OFrs to fix our ‘what OF’ dilemma. Enough of a cluster of ’4th OFrs’ that ‘start’ every day for us.

  • If they pay Hairston more than 3 million a year to platoon, that would be complete insanity in my opinion and against the culture we are trying to build right now. The reason Hairston has never had a multi year is because he’s not worth a multi year deal. He could just as easily bat .220 next season with 10 homers.

  • Of all the outfielders we had last season, Scott was the most productive out of all of them so it would be a good addition. If Dickey leaves we will never have a 20 game winner on the mound

  • Mets should pass on Haiston, he had one good year in his career.

    • I guess so. Plus look at the guy…..PEDs anyone?

  • So here’s my $.02, I would bring Hairston back for 2 yrs @ 2.5per, then turn around and package Mejia, Duda, or maybe Valdespin to Boston for Saltallamachia. Sign Ryan Ludwick for a 2yrs, and trade Dickey for Wil Meyers, and a B level reliver. Your outfield is set, catching is set, and if your not competitive trade Johan to get back some decent prospects back at the deadline. Let me know what ya think.

  • Think how long that lineup would be…
    1. Tejada
    2. Murphy
    3. Wright
    4. Davis
    5. Ludwick
    6. Saltallamachia
    7. Meyers
    8. Capt. Kirk

Other than capt. Kirk where is the hole? Besides their is power from 3 to 7, and an alternating batter at every spot. Capt. Kirk can learn the stick zone, and play outstanding defense, and as Meyers gains familiarity with the league you may be able to flip flop him with Ludwick.

  • Sounds sick. I just wish this comes true.

    • It won’t.

  • Lol, these comments don’t seem to fit.

    • The joys of editing a post from earlier lol

      • I just wanted to mess with your heads. :-)

But seriously, I didn’t realize I had deleted the blurb about Hairston wanting a two year, $10 million contract from this morning.

        • It worked, though!

This post will be up tomorrow and everybody will be confused as if there’s some inside joke.

“The post is about Wright, so let’s all comment about Scott Hairston…”

          • Funny thing is I was able to read it like the Hairston post actually existed.

  • For those of you that still actually beleive that the Wilpons don’t make personnel decisions, here’s this from Ken Davidoff in todays NY Post:

“If Alderson had been charged with making the call on Wright, he very well might have put the third baseman through the same sort of wringer, possibly concluding with a trade. That would have sent the Mets down a dramatically different path.”

“Ownership, desirous of creating more confidence with Mets fans after so much adversity in the past five years, took the lead on the Wright call”

    http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/mets/deal_of_fortune_qmj9qHaF6SZJyBmCqNGlCL

So before you kill Alderson for his every move, remember, he doesn’t get to make every move.

    • Who do we kill for Francisco and trading Pagan?

      • Yeah those 2 moves didn’t work out too well. But he was also responsible for landing Zack Wheeler for 3 months of Beltran.

I just think the Alderson hate on this site has gone way too far.

As has the Minaya love. Remember Minaya got himself canned in large part due to giving out long term contracts to Perez, Castillo, KRod, and Bay. Although I think the Bay deal was a Wilpon doing.

        • How do you know which contracts are Wilpon’s doing or the GM’s? Why did Wilpons fly to Winter Meetings for K-Rod deal announcement?

      • Well, to be fair and balanced, trading a couple of rental guys was still not as bad as the Putz deal. That was a mess.

At the time, the pagan trade was considered relatively even. did not work out, but not all trades do for any team or GM.

        • Yup sometimes you have the best intentions and you suck.

Of course if Alderson’s record on things like FFF and the Pagan trade continues then he will get fired and well should be. That’s not really an issue.

    • Wasn’t a doubt in my mind the Wright extension had the Wilpons footprint all over it

  • And here we go…. So the wilpons in 2 years have made one deal, of course the wrong one and right away we see the biggest alderson supported here chiming in… amazing. all those deal we made, the supposedly minor league deals to fill up the minors who end up being to fill up the major league rosters, the awful signing of francisco and rauch, the trade for pagan, the waste of rule V spots on beato and eamus, hell, even the trade for HU, all those pathetic moves too have the wilpons footprint all over according to SRT.

    • Give it a rest, Alex.
You brought up Hu, Rauch, Pagan, etc., etc. – not me.

My only comment was regarding the Wright extension.

    • Not, that’s not your only comment. for 2 years you’ve been preaching how the wilpons have no money, all of the sudden the money appears to pay up an overrated 30 year old 3rd baseman who at best will net us a 4th place finish while having a good OBP. It’s amazing how you preach forever how they have no money, all of the sudden money shows up, you say nothing, now you’re trying to put it on them that this was their deal fine, but what about the rest of the deals made to try to improve the team? All of those are the wilpons footprint as well? Gimme a break. We can’t even land ludwick with this GM in place because according to him EVERYONE is overpaid. he likes those 1 year deal that’ll cost the team no more than $1 million, so he and his legion of fans try to sell us how they’re minor league deals and everyone is doing it… NO!!! we’ve been doing it for 3 straight offseasons, coming up with ideas and trades, then POOOOF! nothing to show for but garbage yet again… This guy is a small market GM who thinks everyone is overpaid and does not like to spend money, and when he does he gives the team a f’ing frank francisco and john rauch… Amazing!

      • Actually she has continued to remain consistent even after this deal. This deal does nothing to prove that the Mets are suddenly loaded and they had money all along. Alex, how much are the Mets paying Wright in 2013? Do you know? I have no idea considering they according to rumor tore up the 2013 deal making it a new 8 year deal. Also, how much more are they paying Wright in 2013 compared to last year? Next year tons of money comes off the books, you don’t think that money allows them to pay Wright his 1.5M more per year? Re-signing Wright or Dickey does do a damn thing to prove they have money.
Now if they go out and spend money on an OF, even back-loaded? Then I will say maybe their money issues are starting to be behind them.

        • A few places (I think including Joe here) reported that he took less in 2013 to free up some cash for the team to use right now. Which certainly does not point to the team suddenly being flush with money to burn.

and as you note, payroll for 2014 before the deal was going to be very low (looking at guaranteed deals). $30mill? something like that. So this deal did nothing other than basically keep paying DW roughly the same that he is getting already, and in effect pre-spent a little of the big $ that is coming off the books after 2013.

His 16mill for 2013 was already factored into the budget (same as with Dickey) so it does not change anything for a full year regardless.

          • Right, so honestly if they did backload the deal at all and reports are it’s middle loaded (lol) then that actually still screams to the fact they are still short on money. Again, what they do with Dickey and the OF will be more telling than the Wright signing. They have to go above and beyond 100M for 2014 for it to be a sign they are out of the woods.

      • Yes, it was my only comment. Either you can’t read English or you have very poor comprehension. If you’d stick to the subject, you’d be far less angry.

Let’s face it……you saw that one sentence comment from me on the Wright extension and took yet another opportunity to rehash the same crap you’ve been stalking me about for the past several months. Even the owner of this site is tired of it.

Just agree to disagree here. I’m not going to change your mind on the state of all things Mets – and I haven’t bothered to try. I don’t comment to you directly. Why don’t you just do the same.

And thanks TRS, Salty. Probably just a waste of words though…..

    • Why do you always go right back to her? It makes no sense. I can’t think of a time that she has been disrespectful to you and usually never even replies to you unless you reply to her first. It just amazes me how you can’t stand her viewpoint when in reality you share that viewpoint as the Wilpons being clueless. So what if she places most of the blame on the Wilpons and you choose to blame Alderson? At some point this has to end right?

That being said, if you are going to jump on bad signings at least don’t include the ones that worked out. Rauch wasn’t a bad signing at all. He wasn’t elite but he wasn’t paid to be elite. Based on his splits he had either his best or second best season of his career and WAY exceeded any rational person’s expectations. If he could be had for the same price, I would sign him again yesterday.

The FFF signing, that backfired like hell though.

      • i don’t go at HER because she’s a female or anything like that, i am very tired of your sh** of always pinning the arguments and issues i have with her because somehow she’s a female or making it out to be like i somehow don’t like women on this site or something, i come at her the same way you come at EVERYBODY in the blog, you’ve had problems and discussion with everyone in here because you come at every body, there’s not a single person in this site who can have an opinion without you chiming in, yet you asking me why i come at her? or making it out to be like i’ve been disrespectful? When have i ever insulted SRT? I go at her the same way i go at guys like jessep or donal or others, stop doing that sh** because i see and know what you’re trying to do ok… Moving on!

        • I never mentioned the female part her buddy. However, to say you have never insulted her? Garbage.

I never said to anyone they can’t believe the way they want to believe, no matter how irrational the ideas are. However, as I said, and even Joe said, I don’t get the need to always gang up on SRT when she doesn’t do a thing to disrespect anyone here.

Want to disrespect me? Fine, I deserve it at times. I just don’t get the need to gang up on her, that’s all.

        • You honestly have to be the dumbest mother-effer running around the Mets blogs, for Christs sake, look at you.

“When have i ever insulted SRT?”

When you say she only likes Wright because of his dimples, you are insulting her. You are insinuating that because she is a woman her fandom is based on physical appearance and not due to how the person plays the game. You also consistently attempt to bully her, by referencing her beliefs on the state of the team out of context to the actual subject day after day.

I just don’t understand why you can’t possibly have anything better to do in your day then to start off your morning attacking her. You are obsessed and too stupid to understand you are obsessed. So cut the shlt and move on with your life.

          • I know I shouldn’t get so defensive over her but I guess I feel like that she isn’t the type to really fire back at these guys and it pisses me off to no end that because of their tactics the First Lady of Mets blogs will decide to hang it up. I have NEVER read even an attempt by her to be disrespectful to any side unless provoked and even then she shows more patience than anyone should ever be blessed with.

            SRT Rocks!!! LOL.

            • She has never said one pointed thing to one person, and it’s not just her. He was spitting this crap at another person named “Gina”. I just have no tolerance for this BS and if he doesn’t want to here from me about it, there is only one way for me to back off, and that’s for him to quit the rhetoric.

            • Ha! I could say something sexist like that patience learned comes from being married to one of your species for over 29 years…but I won’t. :-)

        • Alex – As somebody who has had their constant battles with you, let me speak to you as somebody who doesn’t hold grudges. As silly as that sounds, if we saw each other at a Mets game – you’d want to punch me in the face. I’d want to buy you a beer.

“i am very tired of your (expletive) of always pinning the arguments and issues i have with her because somehow she’s a female or making it out to be like i somehow don’t like women on this site or something”

Do you realize that you and a few others do the EXACT same thing to me and a few others every time the topic of a latino baseball player comes up? I mean EXACTLY Alex. You don’t take my views of say Angel Pagan as somebody who watches baseball and saw how Pagan played in 2011 and has an opinion on him between the lines – you take it as me showing bias toward non-latino players.

It’s literally the exact same thing that you are now complaining about with how you handle conversations with a female on this website.

Maybe you don’t have issues with women talkin sports – but if you continue to throw a race card at people whom you do not know anything about, then you can’t complain when they accuse you of similar actions.

That is all I will say on the matter.

          • Double standard, Double Standard, DOUBLE Standard, DOUBLE STANDARD!!!!!

LOL, no more of this PLEASE.

            • Not lookin for a fight, an argument or even a response to be honest. If I had Alex’s email I would have written that privately. Just advice from somebody who gets called a bigot on a daily basis without the name callers knowing anything about me personally. I imagine it would stink to be called a sexist or whatever if that is not what you think about women.

              • In terms of Angel Pagan. You take either the career numbers ( which are suppressed by a slow start ) or the 2011 numbers….which was a bad year…

but ignore the 2009, 2010, and 2012 numbers…which other GM’s offering Angel a contract did not do

                it is a bit fishy

          • You are the last person that should be reprimanding Alex. The last person! From the very beginning in your first weeks on this site, you mocked his writing style (please write in english) and immediately put him at odds with you. You and your cohorts went out of you way to villify him as you did with Bayonne because their opinions were too extreme from your own opinions. So please, do us all a favor and don’t try to CLEAN UP this situation. Him and the Sand People have been arguing long before you showed up, long before there was even a Desert as Alex calls it, and when Metsblog was the only game in town.

        • Joe D December 3, 2012 at 11:13 am

“I want to personally apologize to you that you still keep getting taunted by Alex and Bayonne. I have no idea what their problem is with you and I’ve asked them to leave you alone countless times. Bans don’t work anymore and they get around them easily if they want to. I appreciate that you still comment on this site and value and regard your participation in our community very highly.”

When the owner of this site says this to SRT, don’t you think you are causing problems? When he pleads with you yesterday to tone down your rhetoric, don’t you think there is a problem. No you are just too obsessed and feel that you are being unfairly attacked. When it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s a duck you dummy.

  • Acc. to Brian Costa- David agreed to reduce his salary next season to just 8MM from 16MM and deferred a total of 15MM of the 138MM total past his contract- past 2020. The Wilpons did something similar with both Beltran’s and Santana’s contract, deferring $$$ past the contract.
