Blue Jays And Dickey Agree To Extension

Update by Dan Valis ar 12:05 PM
Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports has reported that the Toronto Blue Jays and R.A. Dickey have agreed on a two-year extension worth $25 million, pending a physical. ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports that Dickey has already landed in Florida to undergo his physical which will take place at their spring training facility.

MMO reader “Boomer” shared a link to the Toronto Star who reports that Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos has flown to Nashville to meet with R.A. Dickey at his home to work out an extension deal.
As reflected in his hands-on style, Jays’ GM Alex Anthopoulos prefers to meet players face-to-face whenever an important crossroads arrives. Anthopoulos is believed to have met with Dickey at his home. Reportedly, the Jays have been able to agree on the extension with Dickey, likely for more than the $26 million, two years, he had been seeking from the Mets, but still a bargain for three years compared to recent free agents Anibal Sanchez, Zack Greinke and, assuming Dickey’s higher expected return, than Ryan Dempster.
Forbes Magazine also reports that the hit Dickey will take on taxes is part of the holdup right now, read about that here.

John Lott of the National Post believes that with the trade R.A. Dickey now has more leverage for a bigger multi-year deal along the lines of what pitchers like Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez got or somewhere in between.
R.A. Dickey is under contract for one more year at a bargain rate of $5-million. But as the Toronto Blue Jays launch a hurry-up offence to negotiate an extension, they will have to treat Dickey as though he were a free agent.
Dickey reportedly asked the Mets for a two-year extension worth roughly US$26-million. But with the trade to Toronto — and the recent market-setting deals for Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez — Dickey suddenly wields far more leverage than he did with the Mets, who were unwilling even to come close to what he was seeking.
The Los Angeles Dodgers gave Greinke a six-year deal with an average annual value (including signing bonus) of US$26.5-million. Sanchez returned to the Tigers for five years at an average of US$16-million.
In 2012, and over the past three years, Dickey outperformed both Greinke and Sanchez. This past season, he posted a 20-6 record and 2.73 ERA while leading the league in starts, innings pitched and strikeouts. In all of those categories, Dickey surpassed Greinke and Sanchez.
The reigning Cy Young Award winner in the National League now has about 24 hours left to work out a contract extension with the Jays or else the deal could die.

very, very slippery slope Dickey is on right now.
He is a 38 year old knuckleballer with 2 good years and 1 exceptional year. He’s getting a chance to play for a team with a legitimate “on paper” chance to play for a world series.
He should take his 2 yr extension for 26-30m and be done. Otherwise he’s gambling $30m that he can replicate his 2012 season… because if he goes into 2013 without a contract, he cannot have any slip ups. Teams do not respect the knuckler and his age and his story as much as they respect traditional arms. If he has a year lets say similar to his 2010 campaign, he’d cost himself a ton of money.
Be smart RA. Go play for a chance to win now and get the security – because anything can happen after Tuesday.
He’ll sign. I can’t think of any reasonable scenario in which he won’t. He may be upset that he’s leaving NY, but he knows it represents his best shot at lifelong security. If nothing else, he’ll do it for his family.
I’m glad Anthopolous flew to TN to visit Dickey. Showed him some love, lol.
Hopefully he brought some Maple syrup or something with him.
Unlike you and your group of yes men and ladies, Dickey is a man, his own man, and a man with a brain and his own thoughts. Probably why you and zombie man don’t like him. His head goes sideways, not just up and down.. He can figure out what is good for him. He doesn’t need a clown and a pawn of zombie man Alderson telling him what to do.
I’m not sure what or who this was directed toward but just as an FYI he did exactly what I said he should do. And I love R.A. by the way
Not anything that we didnt already know, but I suspect Dickey will get a 4-year deal worth $60 million to replace the option year. Jays didn’t go this far not to go all out on Dickey at this point. Dickey will be a big winner financially.
Dickey’s agent is smiling from ear to ear.
I hope he holds out for a huge payday and screws the deal. He owes the Mets or the Jays NOTHING! This whole thing is a disgrace.
The reigning Cy Young Award winner in the National League now has about 24 hours left to work out a contract extension with the Jays or else the deal could die.
THIS!
LOL then what?!?!
I almost want the deal to die just for the comic relief that will come from the lunatic fringe. The Alderson fans will jump from rooftops. Plus the added joy of watching Alderson in front of ten cameras squirming while Dickey smiles in the background.
Some Mets fan you are. You want to screw the team because of a guy in the front office was mentioned in a book you never read.
And you don’t think something like that will hurt Dickey long term? That other teams will see what he was like in these negotiations and not want to give him a big money deal?
Screw the team by keeping the best pitcher in baseball? Oh yeah, that’s rich coming from you.
A 38 year old pitcher who isn’t going to be part of the long term plan?
He’s a knuckleballer. Niekro won 120 games after his 40th birthday. Dickey can too. Dickey has easily 5-6 years left at the same level of the last three years. He’s a keeper and will out pitch anyone currently on the Mets in the next five years.
the great difference is
Niekro through age 39 197-171 3.07 ERA 2,194K, 1,020BB 3,094 Hits, 3,427IP
Niekro from age 40-48 121-103 3.84 ERA 1,148K 789BB 1,950 Hits Allowed
Niekro had 15 seasons of success prior to turning 40 years old. Dickey has had 3. At age 40 it was less of a chance that Niekro’s season at age 39 was a fluke than Dickey’s at age 38.
Dickey isn’t Niekro. Dickey’s value is tied to the fact that he doesn’t throw a knuckleball like anyone else.
You can’t compare him to anyone else.
You are comparing him to a hall of famer. How about looking at the other knuckleball pitchers.
J. Niekro. Wakefield. Hough.
All three were mediocre to terrible after 40.
I’m not comparing anything.
Phil Niekro said those things. Phil Niekro said Dickey is better than me.
Take it up with the Hall of Famer, not me.
Watch Knuckleball.
Ah yes, the stench of Alderson’s yes men or should we now more appropriately say yes little zombies. All lined up to trash a man who helps humanity, does stuff for the needsy. What a horrid dude. The only ones in baseball who don’t want him are the scum that are in the exec offices in the city morgue, Alderson and Wilpon. Congrats to Dickey on leaving the hell hole in queens and getting away from putrid fake fans like donal and jessup, They’ll love you in Toronto dickey, as real fans do in NY. Too bad all the Dick Young’s of the Mets zombie circle don’t get it. Next to be smeared by them??????
Ya, I totally just trashed Dickey. Glad to see you make the most out of that Weekly Reader subscription.
Go for the gold Dickey. Climb to the mountain top. Throw them a knuckler. Strike’em out.
Sometimes I wonder if fans really want what’s best for the team or for things to stay the same.
Cy Young or prospects, Cy Young or prospects, tough decision for the novice, easy enough for the informed.
Now, what’s the best for the team according to you???
I want what is best for the team. Drive Fred and Jeff into bankruptcy. Force them to see. That’s what is best for the team. Stay away from their fake Ebbets field.
Deal gets done, Dickey knows if he gets hurt or has a down year he will not get a huge pay day in free agency. He does not have as much leverage as you think, Maybe he gets a little more than Mets would have gave him, but he signs.
ra dickey should take toronto blue jays deal if he doesn;t sign then mets will get nothing alex won’t offer anything else no other team is after dickey so the mets will have to keep him next year and he knows they will not sign him say next year if someone wants dickey no major team will take him for 2 years he would be lucky if a team takes him for one year if anyone takes him for 2 years it will be a team that will not make a playofffs so he wouldn’t win a world series to be honest if he don’t sign with toronto with an extention no team will take him mets could say we will give you 2 years for 6 million a year and he would have to take that dickey should say to alex were do i sign will not get a deal like this again jays are the only team who was interested in him i know they are giving up 2 good praspects but they could turn out to be like travis snider was who knows they could be great but i hope ra dickey uses his head and says i will sign with toronto they have the best chance of winning one to three world series if he wants to win one he will sign with toronto he would be very stupid not to sign with the bluejays
You people think Dickey would be THAT stupid not to sign and play for a possible championship team? Get real.
If Dickey didn’t work out a deal it’d be one of the biggest bone head moves to be honest.
His agent probably already had the parameters of a deal already to go for just such an instance.
Dickey has NO leverage. Where do these people come up with this?
He is under contract for $5.5M for next year. That is the present fate of his life. No matter what happens, without an extension, that is what he pitches for. The present deal with the Jays is with him signing an extension; without it, there most likely is a contingency plan (maybe removing one of the players). Even if there is no backup plan, he goes back to the Mets and pitches for the same amount.
The bottom line is Dickey does not want to enter 2013 without a contract. It is just too risky to wait and see what he will net as a FA. What if he gets hurt? What if he doesnt have a good year? There are too many what ifs. Timmy L in SF might have cost himself tens of millions of dollars unless he can have a sensational year by turning down the $100M offer last year. Dickey would be foolish to risk $25M or more. He has to get a new deal.
I think Dickey and his agent are going to want more than 26MM and 2 years on the contract extension now because of the currency exchange rates and Canadian taxes- 29MM- 14.5 MM per in US dollars and 2 years. This deal would have been done already if just for 2 years and 26MM because the Jays have been trying to hammer out a contract extension with Dickey’s agent since Saturday afternoon.
Honestly, the deal is probably already done or they are just hammering out the logistics. MLB is just weird about announcing things.
The Toronto Star agrees with you.
http://thestar.blogs.com/baseball/
MLBTR:
Contract negotiations between R.A. Dickey and the Blue Jays “have ended successfully at an affordable rate,” Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star reports. The Blue Jays will examine the knuckleballer at their Spring Training site before making an announcement, according to Griffin.
So, I guess I have to learn how to spell the new guy’s names now. I really hope that D’arnaud can stay healthy. If he can and he rakes like the word is then he should have a monster year in Vegas. As for Snodgrass he is too far away for me to get too excited but he does have some good upside.
Snodgrass – LOL.
Source: Dickey in agreement with #BlueJays on two-year, $25 million extension that he had requested from #Mets, pending physical. – Rosenthal
I am glad for Dickey. It is good for him to get his money. He was a great Met while he was here (in spite of what some in the media are saying about him as he exits the door). I wish him well. This was the best move for the organization. They werent going to win with Dickey and the upside potential of what they got back more than offsets the risk. Ultimately, I hope it is a win-win.
Buster Olney – Dickey just landed in FLA to undergo his physical with the Jays. Some of his 2-year, $25m extension with TOR will be a signing bonus for ’13
Agreement reached…..contract details disclosed…..so much for the leverage crap. Dickey did the smart thing for Dickey by coming to terms. I wish him well…..he played his heart out, produced for us, and was a class act the whole way.
dickey should sign with the bluejays no other team went after him they all have there pitchers if he turns down the bluejays i can see alex taking everything off the table with the mets then what dickey would have to play out his last year with the mets and next year no team is gonna want to sign him for 2 years because he would almost be 40 so he might get a one year contract and thats it if anyone would want him if someone did he more and likley get a 6 million dollar deal if dickey and his agent is smart take the bluejays deal this way he signs an extention and stays with toronto for three years i think he will sign an extention with the bluejays he would be stupid not to
i knew RA would be reasonable. Actually, nets less $$$ after-tax given Canada’s higher rates. i luv the guy.

For Blue Jays’ sake, you better be wrong.
Goodbye R.A. You served us well. I wish you all the best and good luck in future endeavors.
So long R.A. and thanks for the great memories. Be happy your scraping the Wilpon schmutz off
your shoes. I hope you win 25 next year, pitch a perfect game against the Skankees, start the All Star Game at Citifield and a trip to the World Series while the Mets languish in or near the cellar at ToiletTown (AKA CitiField). I wonder if the late Joe Gallo can send Basement Bertha down from heaven.
Wow. I can’t believe what I’m reading. The Mets trade a 38 year old knuckleballer that they got off the trash heap for next to nothing and get back two potential studs and the sky is falling. Where in the world were the 2013 Mets going with Dickey? Fourth place at best. Now they’ll finish fourth, but at least have two players that can grow with the the rest of the team. Heck, when Ralph Kiner asked the Pirates for a raise after winning the home run crown, they asked him “what place did we finish?” He replied “last!” The owner replied…”we can finish last without you!”
Well we can finish fourth with or without Dickey folks.
Love the way that so many supporters of getting rid of talent keep telling us where were the Mets going anyway. Of course they weren’t going anyway. Why? Because the GM couldn’t make the team better so he tells the loyal flock wait until 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 etc etc etc and the blind followers keep on clucking 2017 2018 2019, can we beat the Pirates record? anyway enjoy the losing. The Met fan base will shrink ever more while the few blind followerers keep up the charade.
Can it shrink by 1 more already?
That wasn’t the owner that told off Kiner, it was Branch Rickey, the GM at the time.
Shouldn’t you be asking the question “Can we fnish thrd WITHOUT Dickey?”
Cause you guys who all cite these “we were not going anywhere” excuses seem to miss the point…
We are SUPPOSED to get better every year, Not tread water or get worse!
If you get hit by a bus this time next year you won’t ever get to enjoy this 6 years from now you keep talking about.
Life is short and you live for today as tomorrow might never come.
I hope all works out and RA signs because he, seeing the way mgmt and media types (Davidoff) treated him, he deserves some job security if anything for making the 2012 season joyful while he was here.
I hope he wins 20 in Toronto with the better offense though not a great pitchers park and having Jose at SS will help.
I hope that SA and Davidoff are happy to have maligned the best story for Mets this year.
