Mike Nickeas Clears Waivers, Outrighted To Triple-A Vegas

Mets catcher Mike Nickeas has cleared waivers and been outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas, the team announced today. He is no longer on the 40-man roster.

Nickeas, 29, batted .174 with one home run and 13 RBI and had a .471 OPS in 122 plate appearances in 2012. Pretty scary, huh?

The Mets have said that improving the catching situation will be an offseason priority, but will not be adding anyone significant via free agency.

They have yet to decide whether to tend a contract to Josh Thole, but for now I can’t see them non-tendering him. Last week there were reports that Kelly Shoppach did not impress the brass and that he won’t be back.

  • Yay !

The reason we did not sign Pudge to be Josh Thole’s mentor is now in AAA !!!

    • Pudge…why not.

    • Ya, it was Mike Nikeas that stopped him. Not the fact that he was 40, could barely walk and had the PED allegations following him around. We had enough dead weight on the roster.

      • Wait…PED’s?

Are we talking about ronny paulino…a guy who was actually SUSPENDED for PED’s…

        Allegations?

Are we talking about Paul LoDuca?

Are we talking about Mike Piazza?

        FOH

Florida…Detroit…Washington all employed Pudge to help turn their staff’s around…

        get over it kid…Sandy failed

        • No, we’re talking about a guy named by Conseco. As big a scumbag as Conseco is, Pudge hasn’t denied it. The only person accusing Piazza is an old crank with no more relevance.

          “Florida…Detroit…Washington”

Not when he turned 40 they didn’t.

          “get over it kid…Sandy failed”

How so, son? Is he writing your posts for you?

          • Who the hell is Conseco?

Are you talking about Canseco? The guy who saved the game from ruin and was the driving force behind getting congress involved and forcing Selig and the MLBPA to do drug testing and come up with a banned substance policy that had teeth? That Canseco?

            • The guy who cashed in on his own misdeeds by throwing a bunch of other guys under the bus. And quite possible some guys who did nothing wrong.

              • So you hate Canseco because he outed Palmeiro, McGwire, Tejada, A-Rod, etc? Then after their denials they all were caught anyway because they still kept doing roids regardless of Canseco’s claims and even lied under oath? You feel bad for those lying scumbags? Okay, got it.

                • I don’t hate anyone, much less a guy I have never met. It is a waste of energy.

I look at Canseco like a mob informant. Yes, some of what he did does served a greater good (ignoring the fact that the PED thing is just a dog and pony show) but that does not make him one of the good guys.

He only ratted because he could profit from it. And I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that some of the guys he squealed on didn’t actually do anything wrong. Nor would I be surprised to find out he’s got another list for a 3rd book.

          • Pudge at age 40>>> Nikeaus at whatever age

Sandy failed, deal with it son

            • How, boy? By not signing a guy who RETIRED?

Oh, he didn’t retire, he just couldn’t find anyone to sign him to a big league deal.

              • Son, thats an easy one

u still have avoided the fact that Pudge could’ve served as a mentor for Thole…

Mike Nikeaus would be retiring if it werent for the mets…

looking now at 2013, Jose Molina may still be available to serve as a backup and mentor for Thole…

Jose Molina in 2010-2011 served as a mentor to Arencibia ( the catcher everyone seems to be in love with here )

in 2012, he was a mentor to the young Rays staff, as well as their young catcher

I doubt Molina is going to cost much more than a mil

If we are serious about the future, we have to do things that make sense…most winning orgs dont have young catchers w/o an older mentor

  • Sandy is clearing a lot of room on the roster. He will have room for rule 5 picks and veterans traded for multiple prospects.
