Cerrone: Dickey Looking For A Five-Year Deal
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports that the Mets have very little interest in signing R.A. Dickey to a contract extension and instead confirms what Joel Sherman had reported earlier which is that the Mets are actively discussing trading him with several other teams at the GM Meetings.
Also, Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog is reporting that his insiders at the GM Meetings tell him “Dickey will want four years, and probably $60 million after 2013, but the Mets are thinking more like two years and $30 million.” Cerrone also says his insiders say that Dickey’s agents are looking for a five-year deal.
Yesterday, Dickey sounded happy with contract talks, but now it sounds like there’s a chasm between what the Mets think his value is compared to what the Dickey camp believes.
That MetsBlog report of a five-year deal sounds very far-fetched to me and unrealistic. If there’s any truth to that, the Mets will have no choice but to trade him.

“Also, Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog is reporting that his insiders at the GM Meetings tell him “Dickey will want four years, and probably $60 million after 2013″
Cerrones insiders?!?!?
Who are we talking about here the bellhops or the bar tender….or is it random twitter accounts from other mets fans lol
I really dont do opinion pieces and my role for MMO is to report news. As of October the owner of this site said that any news sourced by Matt Cerrone was in play. And whether you want to believe so or not, he does have sources in the Mets organization and with MSM as well.
Just to be clear I wasnt attacking your post Hojo.
No problem I wasn’t taking it that way at all. I just wanted to take the opportunity to relay the message that while we never posted sourced news from Metsblog before, we will be doing so going forward. Knowing Joe D. the way I do, he wouldn’t have made that decision unless he was confident that Matt Cerrone’s sources were legitimate. But like all sources and rumors, you have to take them with a grain of salt.
Does he???? Name one time he’s had his “Sources” being right???? Just because you know the guy who serves the coffee to the wilpons doesn’t mean he’s got sources… He’s not a reported nor has any credibility on Mets news as Adam Rubin or even Martino.. Stop this nonsense…
His source is Jay Horowitz Mets PR man…Anything Cerrone does is PR related to sway public opinion of the Mets. Metsblog aka SNYsports would never go against the boss just like the YES network doesnt talk bad about the Yankees
Now Mets Blog is saying that the Mets aren’t actively trying to trade RAD…his stories change every 10 minutes…
Lmao, Cerrone sources also reported he had tons of jerseys then reportedly he only own one… And his greatest day was riding shotgun with Jon niese..
Id rather just pick up his option next year on the cheap, take my chances signing him after next season, or if 2013 is a repeat of 2012, trade him mid-seson for higher level prospect..thou RA is the man would love to have him around but given age/$ amount i dont see mgmt singing him to such a contract..
Of course dickeys agents are going to start with 5 years. Mets say 2 years then the negotiations begin.
Cerrone is roughing up Dickey in public for the Mets’ management. Dickey is too tough for that though. What a slimy pimp that Cerrone !
I concur, He’s is just going to vilify him in public as being overly greedy and ungrateful to the Mets who gave him his big chance. Same Mets PR crap different victim.
speaking of questionable sources, what about sherman? he is so busy kissing the yankees asses he never has anything to say about the mets unless its to trash them.
They are all questionable sources. Seems none of them get it right until they get it right. Everything we read is speculation. One source stated the Mets could have a deal in place by the WS. Another source said they hadnt even talked length nor numbers.
The truth is it all is conjecture and really means little unless it comes from the people in the rooms doing the negotiating and they arent typically talking.
Heyman is tweeting that the Mets are seeking about OF and C help for Dickey.
Well that would be obvious.
OF and catcher help, eh? Spells like Diamondbacks. Wonder if they can package something that will get Upton & Montero. It should be advised that the Mets should ask for pitching in return as well.
I love Dickey, but not for 5 years, no way. That would be a disaster in the making. We just got rid of an albatross we dont need another.
Yep. And the Mets are going to get another one with Wright since he will get his 6 or 7 years from them.
Take all of this with a grain of salt. Everything said so far has been brought to you by sources.
That is, except the stuff that Dickey himself said. Why would he give Sandy a pat on the back about being competitive quickly and him being a part of that. That his extension talks were progressing.
Cerrone’s take and Dickey’s refute each other. Unless Sandy told Dickey his plan to get competitive quickly was to trade him to the highest bidder. Somebody is wrong or being lied to. Either Dickey is lying, Sandy is lying to Dickey, or Cerrone is lying or getting bad info. The only thing I doubt is that Dickey is lying. It’s more likely he’s being fed bull crap and the Mets have found that the offers for Dickey are too good to pass up. I hope that’s the case.
Dickey for D’arnaud and Marisnick. Blue Jays need pitching to become competetiIve in the AL East that now has Baltimore to worry about along with the Yankees and Rays. Of course Boston will be back soon enough.
Asking for Marisnick might be too much but they have outfield prospects including Gose who is ready now and this years 1 st round pick DJ Davis and 3rd round pick Anthony Alford who is their version of our own Bradley Marquez .
D’arnaud is a perfect fit for the Mets. A catcher who has power from the right side. The Jays already have Arencibia and AJ Jimenez is almost ready and said to be a better defensive catcher than both Arencibia and D’arnaud.
I made this trade on MLB The Show and my offense improved a ton. I like Thole as a backup but if he needs to go just to catch Dickey let him fly. Thole along with Murphy Tejada and our weak outfield were way too prone to hit singles and just not a threat at all to opposing pitchers when they see our lineup . D’arnaud helps now, Marisnick will be awesome with Nimmo and Flores later.
I’d think you could ask for that, but settle on JP, Gose and another prospect. Who knows, if d’Arnaud and Gose does it, all the better.
Mets are going to guage the marketplace on RA and everyone else not named Wright, Harvey, or Wheeler. This is part of the process. RA, his agent, and the Mets are well aware that the clock will be ticking for an extension, and pumpkin time is the winter meetings. That is, unless someone blows away Alderson with an offer this week in a pre-emptive manner. This is all good right now. I certainly would enjoy seeing Dickey pitch for the Mets the next few years, and 200+ innings at sub-3.00 ERA is hard to replace, but there is no way they should pay him for an additional 4 years at $15 mil per….way too risky, regardless of what trade market offers for him.
A 5 year deal could just as easily be a 3 year guaranteed plus two option years.
But you have to ask who benefits from this leaking out?
Then you know who the source was.
Appears to me that they are setting the fans up for a trade and hoping to make it about Dickey wanting too much to resign as the reason for doing it.
Why not start at five years…Knuckle ball pitchers have a long record of successful pitching into their 40′s…plus you look at some recent pears of RAD, Livan Hernandez and Jamie Moyer both have shown the ability to pitch into their 40′s throwing at a similar velocity that RAD does…plus they are throwing much more curveballs and other breaking pitches that are very hard on the elbow. RAD is basically a two pitch pitcher and neither pitch is overly stressful (relatively speaking).
RAD has had no arm problems and has been pretty consistent over the past three years with the Mets, if anything he’s still learning and getting better. He may not win 20 games again, but he’ll pump out quality start after quality start and eat a ton of innings.
Let’s not forget that he’s a gamer and a leader in the clubhouse, plus he’s a Mets folk hero and with his books and story, he’ll bring a ton of good press to the team and plenty of merchandise and excitement.
Sure, I wouldn’t give him five years…but I’d give him three years plus one incentive biased option and maybe another team option after that…I’d look to give him 11.5mil per year plus incentives.
If the Wilpons were running a three card monte game Cerrone would be the shill in the crowd
who yells out he just won. I believe little or nothing that comes out of MetsPravda oops I mean MetsBlog.
The best knuckleballers of all-time had downfalls at the following ages: Wakefield after 41, Hough after 39, Joe Niekro after 39, and Phil Niekro after 43. Phil is a HOFer, the others aren’t. RA Dickey, probably isn’t. Dickey just turned 38. A 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd seems fair. A 5 year deal or a 4 year/$60 million deal will never happen, by anyone, not even the Yanks.
Doesn’t matter, because the Mets will be trading him, and if they are smart they will do it before the season starts so they don’t take the chance of his stock falling.
You forgot Hoyt Wilhelm HOFer, pitched till he was 49 (1972) and was effective till he was 47.
Ted Lyons pitched very well into his 40′s
Phil Niekro had decent success after he was 43, but he did go down then….but we’re not expecting to keep RAD that long.
Tim Wakefield and Joe Niekro aren’t the best Knuckleball pitchers of all time…Wakefield was never that great, Joe was pretty good, probably top five of the knucklers, we wouldn’t know him if his brother wasn’t Phil.
Eddie Cicotte could have been the best, but it took him a while to figure the pitch out and got kicked out while in his prime.
I think RAD is a pretty solid bet going forward. He’s a very young 37 year old and could throw the best knuckle ball out of all of them. A three year plus should be a relativity safe bet. The reality is, any pitcher is a bad and/or risky investment. They all break down and make much more than they’re worth.
Sadly, a trade may happen…you never know what the hell this Fo is thinking.
The only reliable source we have at this point is R.A. himself and what he said publicly. I wonder if we put too much into his words.
So you know, Cerrone deleted the 5 year, 60 million figure he had previously posted and now it says 4 years $50 million from the insiders. That’s why you shouldn’t quote him. He does this all the time and gets called out on it often.
LMAO!!! Drunk blogging the equivalent to drunk texting an ex lol
I bet it’s killing Cerrone that he cant delete the title of this post right now like he did the one on his site.
I just spoke to one of my sources and they let me know 2013 will be just like the last 2 years.
FYI Me and Cerrone have the same source………..A “Ouija board”
It is funny how Matt C pretends that we don’t realize he’s part of the PR team for the Mets.
Won’t happen. A five year deal makes him untradeable.
Could just be a negotiating starting point.
Maybe Cerrone meant his sauces have told him about RA’s demand…
Matt Cerrone and his trusted marinara sauces at it again
Geez, some of you guys are brutal.
Well you kind of deserve it when you report things using only ONE source and without looking for three sources of confirmation befre you rush to print.
Nothing a good course in Journalism Ethics couldn’t solve…
If he bothered to confirm the story he heard he wouldn’t be forced to change it from hour to hour.
Jusrt to clarify when I said you I was referring to cerrone here.

espn. it doesn’t look like it was a sure thing. I don’t know where Dickey got his thing, but it looks like he was duped by the management. Will wright sign with the Mets after Dickey is gone? Alderson is tough and ruthless.
The fact of the matter is, everything reported cannot be trusted. In my opinion, the only comments that we are justified in trusting, are from Dickey and Alderson.
That said, while I believe RA is forthright in his comments, Alderson has repeatedly shown himself to be untruthful and manipulator. However, if people opt to take his comments as accurate, the onus falls on Alderson if his actions don’t align with his words.
In Alderson’s public comments today, he yet again succeeded in delivering mixed messages saying he’s focusing on signing RA at the same time he’s open to trading him.
Oops. Meant to say Alderson’s comments yesterday – Thursday.
A big mistake if they trade Dickey away.
Why trade away 15 – 20 win pitcher, after all pitching is the name of the game.
Hope they don’t make another blunder like they did with Tom Seaver and they better lock up David Wright
