Mets Going To A Modified Six Man Rotation
Terry Collins told reporters in Cincinnati that he will use a modified six-man rotation beginning Sunday, when Jeremy Hefner will start in Washington.
The one exception is that R.A. Dickey will continue to pitch every fifth day.
This is weird… So a heavily taxed bullpen will be short a man and Josh Edgin is still the lone lefty. Jim Morrison was right…

Doesn’t make sense.
All I can think of is Hefner is auditioning for a spot next year as the swingman?
I don’t get it.
I agree it sounds like they’re going to audition guys for ’13
POSSIBLT THEY’RE SUPPLYING A FOOTNOTED EXCUSE FOR FAILURES BEING BLAMED ON THIS IDIOTIC CREATION BY SOME NON-BASEBALL-SENSITIVE MIND ie THE ENTIRE”TRIUMVIRATE” PERHAPS KLOOKING TO BE IN SOME SORT OF MONREYBALL MOVIE SEQUEL TO BE ENTITLED “NONSENSEBALL”
the reason you don’t see why it makes sense is because you are focused on Hefner and not the other guys in the current rotation. In fact, Hefner and Young might be replaced by Mejia and Familia on Sept 1st.
Harvey is on an inning limit, Santana and Young are coming off major shoulder surgery and Niese has a history of fatigue. Everyone in the rotation, other than Dickey, would benefit from the extra rest.
The Mets should move Young and go with Dickey, Santana, Niese, Harvey, Mejia and Familia the rest of the year…
Rosters can expand Sept 1st so we are talking about 12 games going short a man in the pen. If the extra rest benefits what I am guessing is the teams concerns over some tiring arms in the rotation then I am ok with it. 7 of those 12 games are at home so if they burn an arm they can have one made more quickly available I would think via Taxi squad service they have used prior times this season.
Supposedly Dickey will still pitch on his regular rest so we are talking about Santana, Niese, Young, Harvey and Hefner.
Santana could probably use an extra day as Niese who tired late last season. Harvey I believe is approaching an innings limit so this would stretch him out to the end of season plus I believe in the minors Mets starters pitch every 6th day though I don’t know if that is at every level.
It will be a good day when Terry Collins is no longer managing this team.
I sort of agree Matt, but he has been a pretty good manager in some respects. Better than Randolph, and way better than ol’ what’s his name who came after.
No matter what, TC’s contract is 2 and done and I hope Geren and Warthen are sent far away.
He’s OK….he is. But I want to be spoiled and have a really good manager.
The biggest irritation is the “lone lefty” thing again. I mean seriously, don’t these buffoons in the FO and TC’s staff see how they’re repeating their irksome mistakes with Edgin?
Eh……
This season – in regards to competing – is over.
Don’t even know if CY will be back next season. He’s only been piching since June. Don’t think it’s so important for him to go on six days rest.
I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing Johan back next season. If he needs extra rest down the stretch here, skip a start or two.
Niese….he should be finally showing this season he can go the entire season. He needs rest?
Dickey…..good thing they’re not going with six day for him as he doesn’t want to, doesn’t need to and should not be caught up in whatever mindset they’re going with now.
What’s the problem with Terry? His personal changes pertaining to patience and inclusion are perhaps short lived. Now that the team is going through a predictable swoon is the clubhouse different? Will we see tolerated mediocrity and less effort? I am not sold on TC long term. I get his emotions and love of the game and the fact that he is boot strapped by the FO and budgets and having to play Jason Bay and perhaps Santana unless there is a bounce back.
Who would you suggest? Bobby V. has a mutiny on his hands in Boston, Wally(?) not so sure he can handle NY has a manager and not get caught up in it on the field and off, Tuefel (?) You hear nothing from both Goodwin and Tuefel. Warthen never impressed me as having impact.
Who would take the job given the status of the team and the Wilpons?
I think that Tony Gwynn would be an excellent choice. No nonsense, total player, and a survivor. He has had marked success at San Diego State.
I guess we are stuck with TC right now and right now is his audition because times are not good. Adversity is a big test for a “former” firecracker.
