Mets and Marlins Discussed A Jason Bay For Heath Bell Swap
According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, the Mets and the Marlins discussed a trade that would have sent Jason Bay to Miami for Heath Bell and John Buck before the trade deadline.
Basically it’s a swap of bad contracts and underperforming players.
Bell is 2-5 this season with a 5.66 ERA 41 1/3 innings pitched. He’s allowed 45 hits, 23 walks and struck out36 batters.
Buck is batting .168 with a .287 on-base percentage 244 at-bats with 40 walks and 74 strikeouts.
If anything this might signal that things between the Mets and Bay are finally coming to a head. Maybe the Mets will just dump him this Winter so that they avoid having to pay for his ticket to St. Lucie in the Spring.
Bay might be the best example of addition by subtraction since they dumped another overpriced and underperforming left fielder by the name of George Foster.

What I would of given to see the reaction in Miami if this trade had happened.
Heath Bell would have flipped out if that went down.He hates the Mets for using him as a human yo yo years ago
I think that was more old regime and specifically Rick Peterson. I think.
Wow, the Marlins are dumber than I thought. Never been fond of Buck, but I’d still take Bell, even in a bad year.
Interesting, Buck and Bay can’t hit but as a cheap backup i’d take buck. Bell could easily bounce back. The bullpen is a crap shoot anyways why not?
This is one instance where I’d rather keep Bay.
What? You go stand in the corner for 15 minutes and think about what you just said.
To be honest, as bad as Heath Bell’s been – he’s been bad for 4 months. Bay’s been dreadful for 3 years. If the Mets actually convinced somebody to take Jason Bay off their team they should build a statue outside of Citi Field for whoever gets that deal done
As awful as Bay has been (and continues to be), he hasn’t pulled any of Heath Bell’s antics. Plus, all of Bell’s anti-Met rhetoric over the last few years has really annoyed me. Dude, you were a mediocre middle-reliever with a weight problem and two pitches, only one of which was any good. Guys get yanked around all the time and you don’t hear them yelling their heads off in the press.
The Marlins complete and utter failure this season has been an absolute joy to behold.
Mikey – You’re not wrong. I think Bell is a fabulous example of why you don’t pay closers a ton of money and I enjoy every bit of failure he has in that uniform.
But – if the Mets could get anybody to take Jason Bay even for a penny – I’d consider it a steal.
Knowing people here though when Bay turns it around in Miami they’d walk with pitchfork in hand to Citi Field and blame Alderson for trading such a valuable player!
LOL.
You know Jessep, you might be right about that statue!
JESS, KEEP IN MIND JEFF LORIA IS UNTRUSTWORTHY S I PRESUME HE IS THE INSTIGATOR BEHIND THIS RUMORED ALMOST DEAL DESPITE HIS LUDICROUS PRETENSION AS A “BIG TIME SPENDING OWNER” THIS PAST OFFSEASON, THE INNER 3 CARD MONTE DEALER WITHIN HIS SOUKLESS BODY EARMARKS A TRADING PARTNER ALDERSON WOULD DO WELL TO AVOID.
ROSENTHAL’S DISMISAL OF THE NEARLY $9M EXTRA TO BE ASSUMED BY NYM IS TYPICAL OF THE LOWBROW REPORTING HE’S NOTED FOR.
Bay vs Foster as worst FA LF ever? Bay, hands down. At least Foster slugged over .400 with the Mets (.422) whereas Bay isn’t even close (.376). Foster also out hit him as well (.252 to .240). Would I have made this trade? You bet! Bell has been awful as has Buck, but sometimes a change of scenery can help. Oh, wait…..this would have been an all “B’s” trade (Bay for Bell & Buck). No significance to that but it’s interesting that all 3 struggling players last names begin with B. Must be a bad year for the letter B!
This trade should have happened,. why cause bay really sucks, that’s why the mets gave up on him the first time, we all felt since at the time bay was the hitter to get, but the not money at all. The mets management should have done better at that moment to get someone else to play for them. This is why the owners suck so bad with our team, they don’t want us too, they don’t want us to be winners i get it now, this trade should have happened. I’m sorry bay is striking out too much with runners in scoring postion, can’t find his swing to save himself, needs to leave to do that. I feel bad for the guy, but common on now. What’s wrong with this picture is the owners fault, and they need to go, GO OUT OF TOWN AND LET OUR METS HAVE OWNERS WHO REALLY CARE FOR US FANS.
I like Bell, even in an awful year. But we only have Bay for another year – Bell we’d have for two more beyond that. Still….its interesting.
ow can any one like bay, i mean as a hitter no what has he done in two in a half seasons, oh yeah get hurt over and over and overagain, Besides the mets coulld have made the deal and by next season we would see how bell would be in ex- games before the start of the season. In a way bay is a nice guy, but as a ball player now forget it.
This trade would have actually made the Mets take on payroll, which shouldnt be a factor.
What was a factor is that the Marlins couldn’t simply be THAT dumb…
Bell is being paid like a front line starter for the next 4 years. Bay will be gone by June 1 of next year.
Relievers are the most over valued players in baseball and closers are the worst of that.
I can stomach a bad hitter for the next few months. I have reason to believe Bell will get better at 35+.
Bell has 2 years left on his contract.
Yeah, end of the day you do not do this deal. We’ll be rid of Bay soon enough. Well, not soon enough, but in a year.
I was counting this year, but I missed that 2015 is a team option unless he hits some performance benchmarks.
Considering how that benchmark is most likely saves, which are more dependent on the team’s success than his production, I still wouldn’t take the chance.
