Melky Cabrera Suspended 50 Games For PEDs

San Francisco Giants OF Melky Cabrera has been suspended 50 games without pay after testing positive for testosterone, Major League Baseball announced.

Cabrera, whose breakout season with the San Francisco Giants was highlighted by his MVP performance in the All-Star Game, will miss the remainder of the season plus five more games.

Cabrera, a 27-year-old outfielder, has produced a major league-leading 159 hits this season, along with 11 home runs and 69 RBI.

Acquired by the Giants in the off-season from the Kansas City Royals, Cabrera was on his way to a career year prior to being eligible for free agency this winter.

His loss will be a devastating one for the Giants, who will try to maintain their position atop the NL West without their most productive player this season.

  • Oof. And he was probably going to hit the free agent market this winter too.

  • I’m sure he will get a fair appeal unless this is all post-appeal already? Though I have to assume MLB closed any testing loopholes this off-season.

Melky just went from getting a huge contract to getting a minor league deal.

    • “My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have used,” said Cabrera through a statement, courtesy of Hank Schulman of The San Francisco Chronicle (on Sulia). “I accept my suspension under the Joint Drug Program and will try to move on with my life. I am deeply sorry for my mistake and I apologize to my teammates, to the San Francisco Giants organization and to the fans for letting them down.”

Doesn’t sound like he’s appealing to me, since he admitted it.

      • terrible job Melky. terrible. It amazes me how players can be this careless even after all the backlash of the Bonds era.

It just proves more and more to me that players no matter the generation will do anything and everything they can.

        Good find srt.

        • Saw that quote updated on the original MLBTR story.

I don’t know what some of these guys are thinking. Agree – don’t disagree – with the MLB drug policy, but I’m sure all are aware of it. Some have to be letting their competitiveness interfere with common sense.

          • Hmm…..further update by Sherman says he did appeal last month…and lost.

            • See that is what I figured happened. I think MLB learned their lesson and won’t go public with a + test until the private appeal process finishes. Good on them for doing so.

So I’m sorry but I won’t say “good job melky admitting it.” because he already lost his case.

  • Props to Melky for being a MAN and admitting his mistake instead of being a PU$$Ycat like Ryan Braun who tried to cheat Reyes out of batting title and robbed Pujols from an MVP.

  • They should purge his records too. No batting titles for cheaters.

  • O.K., already reading the Giants are looking for a replacement for Melky to stay in the race. Apparently, Hairston’s name is one of the top ones. Anything else Sabean wants to give us? LOL.

    • They still have Gary Brown, I’d take him in a heartbeat. Give them Hairston and Rauch.

      • And a swift kick in the you know what? :)

      • I don’t think it would clear waivers.

  • So much for rededicating himself back into the game. Tsk tsk.

  • When my son was entering his teens I only gave him one drug lecture and it was this: ” can you tell me just one positive thing that has ever come out of illegal drug abuse?” I didn’t even hang around for the answer and never talked to him about it again. He is in his 30s now with three beautiful children and to this day I cannot come up with the answer.

    • see Jagger, Mick

  • I heard Melky was using Bonds old locker……….

  • Why am I not surprised? I knew this guy had to be on something. You don’t just go for mediocrity to a star overnight just because you get in shape. I was suspicious of this guy all along and not surprised they nailed him for PEDs.

  • How about calling Kevin Towers and trading with the D-backs? They are 5.5 out of the division and 6 out of the wild card. if the Giants drop out, that puts them in second place for the division and 4th in the wild card hunt. They may smell blood and do have more to give than the giants.

Or talk to the Cardinals who are 1 out of the wild card. I doubt they are looking for another hitter, but maybe we can pry someone like Oscar Tovares from them.
